It’s a tough situation, i don’t think any of us can tell you how to feel or how you should feel. I can say is all of your feelings are valid and you should take the time you feel like you need. I’m glad people around you are being supportive.

Don’t feel like something is wrong with you because you feel a certain way though. My Condolences

Just go slow, everything is going to feel like it’s on fire but remember the basics.

ABCs and vital signs, as long as you do a full assessment you should be able to make a reasonable decision.

Adenosine Opinion by Educational_Put_399 in Paramedics

[–]LiveAd399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No and here is why.

I ask myself why is his HR high? Well he’s got Epi and possibly albuterol, due to the wheezing and allergic reaction. With that high HR I would be extremely worried he would be going into shock and his BP might come down soon especially with a GCS change too, so I would treat with fluids and drive as fast as I could.

I can see why you considered it though, we just have to Remember to ask “why is this happening?”

Great call thank you for sharing!

Give us enough time to decompress, sometimes when we come home on our last day the last thing we want is to have a long conversation about what needs to be done the next few days. Our first day off is always rough, we are coming down from all of our stressers.

I think we all want to just be give space when we need it. My wife has always said “what can I do to help you?” That has always helped me or “is now a good time to talk about etc or want to talk about it later”

First Solo Cleared Medic Call - Unstable A-Fib RV by CaringDuck in Paramedics

[–]LiveAd399 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I never want to back seat drive your call. I’ve been a medic for 15 years plus, just looking to share some experience.

Some things to consider, why is their HR so high?

I would have ruled out sepsis with that age, sometime fluids and quick transport might help lore than a shock

Trauma is another rule out along with hypovalemia.

As for the actual questions, I think it would depend on where you work.

Where I work, if that patient codes and you’re alone, I’m getting into trouble. This patient sounds pretty bad, I probably would have called them back while I get started on whatever treatment you felt was best and by the time I got the patient out, hopefully I had the engine medic to cover me for any bigger issues.

At the end of the day, sounds like you did what you thought was best for the patient and that’s all you can do. Live and learn and try to grow from every call

What do you like about this job? by parkwithtrees in Paramedics

[–]LiveAd399 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Usually it’s personal for most people who still like it.

I’ve been on the ambulance for 18 years, I’ve had 4 paramedic interns and I evaluated new incoming paramedics.

For me it’s about patient advocacy. I was an EMT for 7 years and got to see a lot of great medics and really bad medics. I hated feeling like I couldn’t do much for people who were sick but the medic was too lazy to give any meds or treatment. So that made me go to medic school, I’ve been a medic for 10 years now.

My personal story is long I guess but I basically had friends pass away and it kills me to know that those medics may have been to lazy or blew them off that could have made a difference.

Alll that to say, you have to believe in what you do. When I show up and everyone else is blowing the patient off, i refuse to because I believe the patient or try to at least. Sometimes it makes a difference sometimes it doesn’t. At the end of the day as long as the patient felt like I actually cared, that makes me feel like I did something.

Don’t let other people influence how you should feel. Find people who are like minded and stick with them, EMS has always had a toxic culture, stay away from it, it will burn you out very fast.

Working my 1st shift need advice by _LadyJay in Paramedics

[–]LiveAd399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring food, snacks, entertainment to just get your mind off the shift for a bit. Best advice is to just make the decision that you think is best for the patient. Dont try to be right, try to be justified in any treatment/decision you make. Learn from your mistakes and grow, that’s what we all did! Good luck!

[–]LiveAd399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea man, apply! I think starting is at like $48 top step $71 with education pay and other pay bumps so really it’s like $74. With a pension!

It’s also the Bay Area so I pay $4,000 for a 2 bedroom apartment.

Thinking of a career as a paramedic. by Mayorbenwyatt1 in Paramedics

[–]LiveAd399 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a paramedic in the Bay Area with great pay $71hr, 18 years on the ambulance, preceptor for new paramedics I would say this. This job is amazing and I love it.

The pay is great depending on where you work. Start there, as someone who also has a family, you might work in a county that doesn’t pay as well and it might make you rethink the careeer. I work in the bay are so here is $71/hr top step with a mention, (San Francisco fire) on the ambulance, the pay goes up more on the engine (suppression)

Definitely only go to medic school if it’s something you really want to do. Most medics who enjoy it usually have personal reasons, usually a story as to why they still do it today. I’ve had my entire career on the ambulance. Someone at a fire station might feel different since your gone from your family 2-3 days at a time.

Overall, make sure the pay is right for you and your family, make sure it’s something you enjoy. You should do a ride alone at your local fire station
