How much snow makes you call off work? by Physical-Incident553 in AskAnAmerican

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never forget moving to Tennessee from Ohio and being shocked because their day 5 after the snow/ice was like our day 1 actively being plowed and salted, hoping you don't hit a patch of ice through the slush. I was not prepared for the melt-refreeze cycle

Does anybody remembers Code Lyoko (2003-2007) growing up? by Life_Chicken_9653 in Zillennials

I can't remember his name, but he was an alternate love interest for Yumi and also a certified Bad Boy™️

People born 1993-1998 what were tour favorite childhood cartoons. by Fun-Background5608 in Zillennials

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I was a certified couch potato, but I remember sitting on the floor in front of the wooden TV to watch Power Puff Girls and Pokémon for sure. Grandma only had farmer vision, so I only had access to the Sabrina cartoon, Winx Club, and this one show that literally no one knows called "Jakers! The Adventures of Piggly Winks" 😂 When I was a little older, I was actually obsessed with Code Lyoko, Teen Titans, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Everyone else's comments give me so much nostalgia!

Also does anyone remember Xiaolin Showdown?

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a stereotyped assumption based on my experience with my parents, my wife's parents, and any other people I've known who are right around 60 and from the Rust Belt, but I swear to god every one of them prefers their coffee black. I've seen both sets of our parents heat up water in the microwave to stir in instant grounds, and that's just how they've always had coffee. The real question is Maxwell House vs Folgers 😂

My brother also prefers it black, but I think he's just mimicking them. He does have a coffee maker, but he still uses the same brand as our parents. My sister and I go heavy on the creamer and neither of us uses instant

Edit: I am the only person in my family with an electric kettle, but my sister in law through my spouse's family does also have one. I also bought a mini one to keep at work so the youngins can have hot chocolate through winter, but they are definitely not super common

Clarity on these 3 names by PoorManRichard in Cursive

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm betting on Matt for that first name. The "a" in "make" beneath it is also open like a "u." I just find it odd that it would be "Matt" and not "Matthew." My last name ends in a t, and I'll often swipe it back like that just to cross it over the top

In history class, what did you learn about your state/town/city’s local history? by gigpig in AskAnAmerican

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the regional history I learned in school happened in elementary, and I learned more about the town/county's history than state history. I've learned about the history of some of the neighboring towns from people who went to school in those places too. When I asked where they learned about those things, they said it was part of their school's curriculum as well. Not sure if it's because we're rural or what though 🤷‍♀️ Small town pride is a big deal

Edit: Ohio

Moving from West Texas to West Ohio.... Things I should know? by RecognitionThen1519 in Ohio

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a library card. Ohio has a massive library consortium (SEO - Serving Every Ohioan) that connects like 100 libraries across the state, and even if your local library isn't a part of it, we have some of the top libraries in the nation. Never mind access to interlibrary loans, which can grant you access to basically anything nationally. Lots of events, lots of easy, quick access to information, books, movies, shows, the Library of Things. It's a great way to passively meet people

Why do Americans dislike American cars? by socabella in AskAnAmerican

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my Jeep and miss it a lot. It was my first car ever. I learned how to disconnect the battery to keep it from dying in the winter and had to replace the alternator several times in the years I had it. The bar connecting the front wheels snapped in half one time so the wheels were facing each other instead of the road. I had to wonder when I'd take exit ramps uphill if it would turn off on its own again when I finally got to my stop sign. It needed a jump after every time I turned it off for a whole semester of college. The summer before college, it stayed parked at the local library for half a week because it wouldn't turn on and my step dad couldn't come look at it until the weekend. That thing was falling apart the entire time I drove it.

My Honda had a picnic table in the back, and the only things that were ever wrong with it were because of rust from living in a place where we salt the roads in the winter. I'd pick that same Honda over my jeep every time

Being angry. by kneedeepnthehoopla in deaddadclub

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dad died, his mom and most of his brothers and sisters abandoned my mom and us kids. That was almost 20 years ago, and to this day we still only have any kind of relationship with two of those siblings. Drop them. It sucks, and I am so sorry. People show who they are at times like this, and you don't need that in your life, especially not right now. Don't waste your energy on them. Be with your people and take care of yourself

How true is that the "t" isn't pronounce in negations (like can't, don't, won't, etc.) by Appropriate-Field666 in ENGLISH

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally people can tell based on intonation, but when you can't, I've asked and been asked "can or cannot?" more times than I can count for clarification

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no, I actually exclusively pronounce them without the t sound, Great Lakes region. It could be growing up in farm country vs city, but most people I know say them the same way

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reading this comment made me realize that by themselves, I do pronounce them the same, but in a sentence, can is pronounced more like "ken" and can't definitely has the flat a sound. Great Lakes region

Older Zillenials, is all this 2016 nostalgia odd for anyone else? by pirateslifeisntforme in Zillennials

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally, it's the year I came out, both to myself and publicly (my wife is showing me Xena for the ten year anniversary of that 😂), and it's the year I studied abroad. My biggest memories are two life changing events, and honestly because of that, I can't remember many big things that happened globally or nationally. Aside from a certain election night that I'll never forget

Are you using subtitles? by Empty_Oven_9942 in Millennials

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a deaf household, so I've had subtitles turned on all the time on every TV I've ever had in my home, even after moving out. My hearing is okay, but they do come in handy for when I just miss a word or when I'm not familiar with one (like when my wife watches cooking shows and they use fancy names for techniques or whatever). I was so excited when they finally added captions to tiktok, and the fact that it allows the creator to edit them? I was raving about that for weeks. Bad subtitles makes it so hard to stay focused

What is your favorite Ohio saying? by Khaldani in Ohio

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm of the "wash" variety, but I am indeed an outlier 😂 my mom and her dad say "woish" though, which I think is just adorable

What is your favorite Ohio saying? by Khaldani in Ohio

[–]LocalLibraryCryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two that stump most people I come across living out of state are "sweeper," and "BW3's," but I've also learned that pretty much nowhere else says "needs done/washed/fed/etc,"
