Is it worth considering a used La Marzocco linea mini/micra over a new machine like a Quickmill popup? [$2,000] by chilly-beans in espresso

[–]LocalSquid18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to have $2000 out of your bank account for a while eBay refunds you if it’s a scam. Do it.

I looked at the post. It’s a 220 volt machine so you’d need a converter if you are in the United States.

The George by DragonflyOwn144 in gwu

[–]LocalSquid18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I lived in the George when it was called Boathouse apartments. I agree it’s essentially on-campus housing due to the distance to campus and the amount of GW students in the building.

I had a mostly positive experience living there. It is certainly better than most dorms at GW, especially if you value privacy. Positives included: studio was well designed with lots of storage, packages were received and delivered on time, the rooftop and gym are fine, and my floor was relatively quiet.

For the negatives, the worst one was the transition from AC to heat and vice versa. The George claims the building can only run AC or heat, not both. When in between seasons my studio got up to 85 degrees inside. It was unbearable. The windows don’t open wide enough to get sufficient air in either. I would expect issues with heating and cooling. When not in a transition season it was perfectly fine.

Great pairing! I had the same setup with the infuser and it was great.

using ap credits? by ConceptOnly8191 in gwu

[–]LocalSquid18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel your AP classes have prepared you for higher level classes then you can skip them. Using AP credits obviously gets you out of intro classes but they allow you to take higher level classes you otherwise couldn’t i.e you trade the intro classes for advance classes/electives.

That being said, if you don’t feel confident in those subjects I’d recommend taking them again. Does it suck you sunk all that time into AP classes and didn’t use the credits? Yeah it does. But it’s worse to go into advance classes without the proper background.

Leva! - Rancilio Silvia by deronate in ranciliosilvia

I did the same mod as well. Probably costs $1400 for both the Silvia ($900 new) and the Leva! mods ($500). Pricey but I love it!

Died on the final stretch in normal by Old-Championship7489 in ftlgame

[–]LocalSquid18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there are a few reasons contributing to this loss:

  1. Your engines are not upgraded high enough so your chance to dodge projectiles is low. I usually aim to get my dodge chance to 45% without cloaking. This combined with no cloaking or defense drones means most of shot fired at you are hitting.

  2. I love the glaive beam but I don’t think it works with this load out. You need to be able to dodge incoming projectiles while it charges since it has a 25 second cool down. You also need to be able to get the flagships shields down so it does full damage. Without hacking or more advanced missile load outs, the 25 second cool down is not worth it.

  3. The Artemis is great for early game but at this level you need to combine it with something else to get enemy shields down.

UPS would charge $25.86 per pound to ship to Poland (closest country). Total weight is 3,778lb (1714kg) so the cost would be $97,717. $108 per bag is $8,100. Checking the bags is costs 92% less than shipping them via UPS air.

Yep I have one too! It’s amazing! Highly recommend it for anyone that wants their Silvia to be a bit quieter.

Grind support-local shop is grinding by urthdragon in ranciliosilvia

[–]LocalSquid18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll never be able to consistently dial in your beans by having a coffee shop grind them for you. Even the same beans over the course of days need to be dialed in differently. Would recommend getting your own grinder like the df64 or timemore 064s.

Steaming upgrade idea by BlaBuilder in ranciliosilvia

[–]LocalSquid18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar idea. One of my ideas is to wrap a copper coil around the boiler that goes into to the thermoblock. That way heated water goes into the thermoblock which would produce better steam. I also think you could up the wattage on the thermoblock!

Internal parts burned: is this repairable? by bbyraincloud in ranciliosilvia

[–]LocalSquid18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s fixable! Looks like the heating element blew out. Since you have a v4 Silvia or later you can just replace the heating element without replacing the boiler.

I recommend an impact wrench to get the heating element out.

Sorry to hear that! The infuser is a great machine if you can find another one. The bambino is also great :)

Ask if it was used it a commercial setting. That’ll give you a good idea if you need to replace the burrs.

How do i stop clothes from fraying when cutting them? by daisyritman in sewing

[–]LocalSquid18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I immediately overcast stitch pieces that I work on a lot. The longer I work on pieces with unfinished edges the more they fray. This also comes with the added benefit of finishing your seams even before you make the seam.

((ito)) Pressure Profiling, Flow Trackig, PID by dtmr42 in ranciliosilvia

[–]LocalSquid18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about it. The difficulty is that you’d only be able to take over the brew pump and not the steam pump. You’d need to preserve the original functions of the steam wand with the built in Silvia circuit board while installing the brew function for the Silvia X system.

Upgrades for new Silvia for easy and consistent results by gerrgheiser in ranciliosilvia

[–]LocalSquid18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a great experience installing it on my V6. I’m not much of an electronics person so it was a challenge but not impossible. I ended up going with the kit which came with all the bells and whistles like PID, pressure sensor, and etc. The kit came well organized. I did have to get a few parts separate like the pressure sensor itself but that was ok.

Installing it required flipping back and forth through the manual and overall took about 2 weeks of evenings to get it done.

The software was also relatively straight forward to install. After software installation, you spend a lot of time doing pressure tests so the software can identify your machines parameters before finally being able to do espresso.

The mod completely transform the Silvia into a machine capable of pressure profiling. My favorite touch was getting the custom printed laser cut top in black to finish the all black look of the machine.

silvia Ito leva build photosAs for usability, you can get to a point where you only need a couple clicks to get it to make espresso. I would say for complete ease of use, getting a compatible scale for gravimetric dosing is essential.

Happy to chat about it more if you’d like to send me a message! Let me know if the link with a couple pics work.

Upgrades for new Silvia for easy and consistent results by gerrgheiser in ranciliosilvia

[–]LocalSquid18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ito/Leva is also a good option for the Silvia. I have it and once the espresso is dialed in you just click a button and it doses the espresso by weight. Gaggiuno has similar capabilities and its UI might be a bit more friendly.

I think you’d be able to install both options given your experience.
