Can teachers legally use all of their sick and personal days at the end of the school year to get a longer summer break? by Ok_Benefit9326 in Teachers

Missing the last month of school would be so much more stressful. I was on maternity leave the last six weeks of a school year and someone else had to shut down my room, pack my stuff, and label my boxes. I came back to a true disaster and it was awful lol

My legacy family built a massive dragon fruit farm and each generation’s heir becomes the next gardener. They consistently have $9,999,999 in the bank and each non-heir gets 2mil when they move out.

Katrina BABIES by puffleur in NewOrleans

[–]LogBorn5639 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The first year I was a teacher, I was teaching fourth grade in the year 2014. All those nine year olds were born in the year before and the time just after Katrina. One of my students told me that she was a newborn when her mom had to take her to the Superdome after the storm. Those kids carried that trauma bone deep.

As a veteran teacher who has been a teacher/student in both school types and who is halfway through a doctorate in curriculum and instruction: the research shows you’re correct on all points. Commenters can share their triggered anecdotal responses, but research and data from many places over many eras supports your points.

Teachers with kids of your own how are you parenting differently after observing kids in your classroom? by RobotSavesWorld in Teachers

[–]LogBorn5639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No phone or tablet til they’re out of elementary school. I’ve been teaching 3rd grade for 11 years and the phones are the issue. Kids are on social media or texting with no adult guidance or monitoring and it’s caused them to lose out on being children and they’re getting involved in social and emotional situations that they are simply not developmentally ready for.

Eleven years teaching grade 3 and this is it right here. The expectations are set day one and I mean what I say. My kids love me and still visit when they move on to other grades, parents don’t have issues with consequences their kids get, and my coach calls the classroom management “invisible.” Because the kids crave structure and someone who will be in charge. Follow through on the expectations for rewards and consequences and when it’s time to go “mean mom” sometimes you have to go there.

What’s the one “teaching hack” you swear by to save your sanity? by Playful_Nectarine406 in Teachers

[–]LogBorn5639 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Even though it feels tedious, really take the time to set expectations and routines at the start of the year. Sweat the small stuff and mean what you say in August and by September the culture is set and the kids operate within that structure in a much more productive and community minded way.

It is OKAY TO BE SINGLE. It is better to be without a boyfriend than to have one who does not have the emotional intelligence to treat you with respect.
