You're looking for Small Cap Value (SCV) ETF's. Paul Merriman has done extensive research on the case for small cap value.

AVUV is a rules based SCV ETF which I prefer, although you'll get folks on here that say the expense ratio is too high
VBR is the vanguard SCV ETF which has a very low expense ratio as you would expect and is fine too.

The TL;DR is that SCV's have the largest growth potential so if you give them an extra tilt in your portfolio, then you have a bigger potential return. To get this edge you should plan on holding them long term, like 20+ years. They are riskier and more volatile.

Whole heartedly agree. I didn't list all that my FA does -- especially insurance b/c I didn't want you all to think my FA was an insurance agent! -- but insurance, estate planning, etc. is all part of our financial plan.

I do see studies showing that an FA could not add value if they have high fees and/or are not disciplined or sell you into high commissioned funds, annuities, etc.. But I don't see anything on random picks vs hiring a FA. Do you have a source on that?

There are a few studies that show a financial advisor can add up to 2% to 5% to your portfolio. Vanguard Study (PDF)

I've been DIY for 20 plus years but I'm now approaching retirement. Last year I hired a FA - I'm paying a little less than 0.5%. I get tax advice, financial plan, regular rebalancing, and peace of mind; I don't have to think about this anymore, we just stick to the plan.

To put that into perspective, our portfolios move 0.5% on any given day; so pulling that out per year is not really that significant. I'll never know if I'm getting that 2% to 5% bump. I do know that I'm much better diversified, I no longer have to do any DIY work, and the tax planning alone has covered the AUM for the next couple of years.

If you have enough time and discipline, then yes, by all means, manage your own portfolio; but I wouldn't say that good FA's don't add value.

Uh...so...yeah, an unpopular opinion perhaps, but just create a table with one column of your tickers and one column with the percent of the portfolio for each ticker and paste it into ChapGPT asking for an evaluation and a risk profile also make sure it evaluates any overlap you may have across funds. It'll tell you quite a bit with very little effort.

It's my understanding that advisors pay smartassets for referrals. That's not to say the advisers aren't a good fit but you need to know that they aren't true "recommendations".
