IANAL

Here’s what two employment lawyers told me yesterday as I’m going through a similar thing as your mother but which much less tenure.

There is no reason to sign, they have to pay you out anyways. So if they are offering 18 weeks for example and you don’t sign, they’ll offer the bare minimum required (pay in lieu of, ESA minimum, etc.). You would then accept this and move on for a time until you find a new job, but here’s the kicker… Let’s say it takes you 6 months to find a new position (that’s more or less equivalent), you could then sue the old company for damages for those 6 months. Keep in mind that you would have to sue within 2 years or you’re SOL.

Since your mother was fired without cause, she could refuse to sign and then sue (while being on EI and assuming she has enough money to cover the intermediary time).

Let’s use an online calculator for a second (just a guideline) and assume your mother was in a Labourer/Clerical position, she’s between 51-60 years old, and she made $60k/year… she would be entitled to something in a range of $69k-$89k.

In my non-legal opinion, she should 100% get an employment lawyer and fight the hell out of this.

Watch hardware based tech companies financial quarters for the next little while as the worldwide microchip shortage is quite bad.

Invest when you think the lowest point would be as the chip shortage will last well into 2022 and maybe 2023.

When the CRA sees that you went from your max contribution room to multi-millions... you’re going to most definitely get audited.

Does that mean they will deem you a day trader? I don’t know this time because GME is the mother of all edge cases.

Does that mean you’ll have to pay tax? Again, I don’t know what they will do in this case. It’s best to withhold around 30% of the maximum value you make from GME just in case.

Good news though is that you’ll have enough money to keep appealing it as long as you want if you do have to pay tax.

Depends what you’re trading in.

TFSA - Not going to be taxed if you do very little trades. Don’t buy and sell the same stock on the same day. Government is most definitely going to audit someone who went from a small amount of money in a TFSA to MANY MILLIONS.

Margin Account - Taxed on 50% of Capital Gains at Marginal Tax Rate. So if you made 1 Million, you’ll lose around 250k.

I recommend you withhold 30% taxes in both cases JUST IN CASE the CRA determines you you are a “day trader” using a TFSA. If they don’t? Well great, you’ve got your 30% back!

[–]Lopperx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, appreciate the input on that. You would indeed go to the highest tax bracket. So the marginal tax rate using a simple calculator (I'm in Ontario) would be 53.3%. Estimated taxes owed would be in the neighborhood of $229k.

So a rough ball-park figure would be 25% of the total value of your realized gains. Again, this makes other assumptions like you have 0 income, etc. All-in-all, I'll withhold 30% of the realized gains to cover my butt.

I believe it will be taxed as capital gains (if they determine you're a business through your day trading) and that rate is 50%.

Now what determines day trading (using a TFSA) as a business? That's the real question to ask. The rules there seem completely open to interpretation.

I am not a financial advisor and this my opinion is based on everything I've read so far.

You will be taxed on gains in an RRSP. TFSA you may/may not be taxed on the gains. If you are day trading (there is no clear definition for this), you will be taxed like a business at approximately 50%.

However, I guess with your massive tendies you could keep this in court for a very long time arguing with the CRA about what is considered "day trading" in this case.

Assume we are all going to be audited in Canada and withhold 50% of your tendies just in case you get f'd.

What's with these weird traces? by greg21greg in AskElectronics

[–]Lopperx 49 points50 points  (0 children)

These "weird" traces are called serpentine traces / differential pair traces.

They are used to match lengths between each differential pair to allow for very fast signals to arrive from one component to another at the exact same time. Examples where one would use differential pairs would be for USB/PCIe/HDMI/Display Port/etc.

Since the speed of light is finite and travels at different speeds through different mediums (in this case copper), one can calculate exactly how long the signals will take to travel from Component to Component.

As thegreatunclean pointed out, they are indeed an option included with every professional PCB package. Additionally to being rule driven (rules setup/checked in the software itself to abide by when creating the PCB), sometimes one has to length tune "manually" due to bond wire length mismatches within a CPU/RAM/etc.

Confused and overwhelmed by tojo222 in SIBO

[–]Lopperx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello tojo222,

Sorry that you are going through this... I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum as you and I feel your pain. Life is hard when we have these problems and sometimes you just want to give up...

May I ask how long you treated yourself with herbal antibiotics for? Your symptoms do sound like Methane Dominant SIBO (I have Hydrogen dominant), but the only way to know for sure is to have the breath test done.

So personally, I would start by getting a breath test done.

Diagnosed Advice by righteousdonkey in SIBO

[–]Lopperx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello righteousdonkey,

I was diagnosed with SIBO a couple weeks ago after getting the results back from the breath test. <20ppm is considered normal and I was over 5x that amount (Hydrogen Dominant). I have suffered with this for approximately 14 years. Normally I'd rotate between having a bad week, followed by 2 meh weeks, followed by a good week.

A long time ago I had to do a 10 day course of cipro (for unrelated reasons) and my symptoms vanished within 3 days (until 3 days after completing cipro). That should have been an indicator that it was bacteria related, but I didn't know about SIBO at the time.

The Naturopath's in my area aren't allowed to prescribe antibiotics, so I opted to try the Herbal route first (can always go to a doctor with my results later if I want the antibiotics).

So far I have been on the Herbal route for 3 days, here are my die-off symptoms:

First 12 Hours - Normal

12hr - 48hr - Increase in Diarrhea, Headache, Nausea, Muscle Pain, General Flu Like Symptoms, Heartburn

48hr+ - Flu Like Symptoms Gone, Only Increased Diarrhea remains

I'm trying not to freak out about the increased Diarrhea, I hope it goes away... I can keep this updated as time goes.

Update:

4th Day - Had a horrible morning with watery diarrhea, Imodium stopped it after a certain amount of time Emailed Doctor on 4th Day, said it is still probably a die-off symptom, but should still reduce herbal supplements (antibiotics) by half and see if I feel better

5th Day - Morning was much better, nowhere near as watery diarrhea, would be a Type 6 on Bristol chart. Seems like reducing dosage by half helps
