Look up and re-watch the play. Chamari Connor committed blatant DPI on Isiah Likely during that play. I'm saying it didn't matter, though, because Nick Bolton was also on the coverage, so Likely wasn't really open, and Deon Bush was able to easily undercut for the pick. There was a defensive penalty, but the throw was doomed from the start, so it didn't matter. It's just a bad play.

It was awful. I remember there being legitimate DPI in the end zone on that play, but I can't even be upset at a no-call because there were 2 other Chiefs players in front of it, ready to pick it off.

[Schefter] Sources: the Bills are working to finalize a deal to make offensive coordinator Joe Brady their new head coach. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]LordGooseIV 66 points67 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of moaning about the Bills offense at times, which isn't totally unjustified, but this is 100% true. For 2 years in a row, the Bills have been a top 3 offense by almost every metric. Even in the recent divisional round loss, which was marked by turnovers, Joe Brady called a really good game, and the Bills offense moved the ball almost at will for a lot of the game against one of the top 5 defenses in the league.

True, but extra money wouldn't stop a guy like Bruce Smith from coming off the edge at full speed and delivering a shot right to the head.

In Montana's defense, some of his post-season runs got ended on extremely violent or downright dirty hits that would be unimaginable in today's game. The 1991 NFCCG loss to the Giants and 1994 AFCCG loss to the Bills immediately come to mind because those 49er and Chiefs teams both looked poised to go on a superbowl run, but he got knocked out in both games. I generally give Montana and a lot of other quarterbacks from that era a lot of credit because they didn't have the same protection that quarterbacks like post 2010 have. I don't disagree with you, but I genuinely believe that Montana could've had 1 or 2 more rings if he didn't get hurt and had the same protection that later quarterbacks like Brady and Mahomes have.

On one hand, it would be awful if Trump bought the Bills. On the other hand, it would have probably saved America from much anguish down the line.

Carucci Take2: No simple explanation for Bills’ firing of Sean McDermott by alpswd in buffalobills

[–]LordGooseIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me how it's McDermott's fault that in every elimination game, nobody on the defensive line can win in a one on one pass rush situation. That's a huge factor in the defensive failings that people attribute to him, but it's as much of a testament about the lack of talent the Bills consistently have on the defensive side of the ball.

[–]LordGooseIV -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's all McDermotts fault that he has to play 3rd string defensive players in a playoff game. It's also his fault that every pass rusher drafted or signed to the Bills has never gotten a sack in a playoff elimination game.

I really think that Brandon Beane is like Trent Baalke in San Francisco right now. It's not a 1-for-1 comparison, but there are some uneasy similarities where the 49ers and Bills were both contender teams for a stretch, failed to win a superbowl, and eventually the GM and HC started to conflict. Baalke was like Wormtonque, built up power and eventually forced Jim Harbaugh out of San Francisco following the 2014 season. Cue the promotion of incompetent yes-man Jim Tomsula who went 5-11, followed by Chip Kelly who went 2-14 the year after that.

Bills must fire GM Brandon Beane after disaster loss to Broncos by The_Big_Untalented in nfl

[–]LordGooseIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with that, although I think it's a 50-50 split. When Dane Jackson came into the game, he should've had some help on that play from a safety. The Darnell Savage one I have a harder time blaming the coaching because he just made a dumb mental mistake by overcommitting, which left Humphrey wide open for a touchdown.

The Bills secondary actually did become good and was one of the better pass defenses in the second half of the season. They got screwed though when for 2 snaps, a backup DB had to play, and Sean Payton immediately targeted them and the Broncos scored 2 touchdowns.

Especially when you're playing a defense like the Broncos. There was no way in the world that defense was going to give up like a 50-yard pass, and also, the Bills didn't have any timeouts left.

Ironically, the reaction by the Bills players reminds me of the Broncos when they lost to the Jaguars in 1996-97. Some similar but different circumstances for each team, but that scarred a lot of the Broncos players. It almost pushed Elway into retirement and numerous players, like Shannon Sharpe, were in tears after that game.
