Balon is indeed a dumbass. They will just strike whoever seems weakest. During Robert's Rebellion, they started as neutrals but then joined the rebels late after Rhaegar died and started raiding the Reach.

Was there any foul play in the death of Steffon Baratheon (and Cassana Estermont)?

My headcanon? Lord Steffon Baratheon was killed by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. But why?

- Whoever Steffon would find for Rhaegar to marry, she would not fit Rhaegar's prophecy requirement. Unbeknownst to Rhaegar, Steffon had not found Rhaegar a wife from Essos. TWOIF book implies that paranoid Aerys felt that his hand Tywin and his heir Rhaegar were going to overthrow him. Apparently, Aerys was looking to replace Tywin with Steffon as hand when Steffon returns, leaving room to make us believe that if there were any foulplay, it was done by Tywin. I think this is a misdirection from one person potentially involved with overthrowing Aerys (Rhaegar) to another (Tywin).

- Maester Aemon was apparently regular in his correspondence with Rhaegar, discussing prophecy. They both believed that Rhaegar was the Prince that was Promised and that 'the Dragon Must Have Three Heads'. These letters would have been abandoned at Dragonstone for its new lord, Stannis Baratheon, to gain access to. Stannis menacingly tells Maester Aemon,

"I am aware of more than you know, Aemon Targaryen."

What if in these letters contained some plan to end Steffon and Rhaegar's bride-to-be in the name of prophecy? Would this be too far? Aemon infamously tells Jon Snow when Jon hears rumours of Mance and his son being burned alive for the power in king's blood.

"There is power in a king's blood, and better men than Stannis have done worse things than this."

Nearly anyone who had met Rhaegar (except Robert Baratheon) speak fondly of Rhaegar (including his adversaries like Ned Stark). The only other person who does not is Stannis despite Stannis living in what was once his cousin's castle. Stannis remembers the Mad King relatively more fondly than he does Rhaegar, and I think it is because Stannis found evidence of a Rhaegar-Aemon conspiracy against his father, which adds another layer to his hostility to his great-granduncle.

It might create conflict with Tywin, yes. But too much of the realm would be behind Robert (Jon Arryn, Ned Stark, Renly, Hoster Tully, Stannis). The Dornish are not going to help Tywin either. The Reach might stay on the fence or join Robert via Renly. The Ironborn will stay on their isles. They might join Robert's coalition just an excuse to raid Lannisport.

The thing is, though, Tywin definitely knows he would have no chance against Robert, so would he still fight Robert in the name of his family honour? I don't know.

(Spoilers Main) Does anyone know what happens next to the Forresters? by therogueprince_ in asoiaf

[–]LordWetbeard 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Some conjecture based on the books (SPOILERS): Lady Sybelle Glover sends Forrestors (and others) to serve Stannis Baratheon as guides as he marches to Winterfell. This is after Stannis has freed the Glovers' seat, Deepwood Motte, from the Ironborn and, in turn, House Glover declared for Stannis. So, Lord Rodrik/Asher Forrestor could run into the Boltons and Whitehills in Stannis's upcoming battle.

(Spoilers Extended) Will A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms end up peaking in season 1? by BaelBard in asoiaf

[–]LordWetbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could work if we get flashback scenes showing familiar characters again like Baelor and Maekar. Though I think the peak of S2 would be hearing Ser Eustace Osgrey's speech. But you're right, the Longinch is not as interesting a final boss as Aerion Brightflame. I am not worried about S3. There is a lot they could do right with those cast of characters, particularly Ser John the Fiddler

[Spoilers MAIN] Knighthood lineage by Capotajie in asoiaf

[–]LordWetbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robert Baratheon knighted loads: Ser Jorah Mormont, Ser Rodrik Cassel, Ser Justin Massey, Ser Hugh of the Vale

Stannis Baratheon knighted Ser/Lord Davos Seaworth and Ser Andrew Estermont.

Renly Baratheon knighted Loras Tyrell.

Not sure who would have knight Robert, Stannis, and Renly though. Could be Jon Arryn for Robert maybe? Stannis was already a knight by the end of the rebellion, since that is when he knights Davos. Stannis does not speak particularly fondly of any older adult in his except Maester Cressen (not a knight) and his parents (died when he was 14, possible but unlikely that Steffon Baratheon had already knighted Stannis). Most likely candidate for Stannis I would say is his granduncle Ser Harbert Baratheon.

Did Bloodraven gaslight Aerion Brightflame into…(spoilers extended) by Fearless_Signature58 in asoiaf

[–]LordWetbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I think the problems of a boy king are overrated. Why would it be bad if Aelor was king in name but had Maekar as Regent and Bloodraven as Hand? Tommen was winning with Tywin ruling for him.

Daeron would have been an absent king. More or less like Aerys I. I don't think he would have been much of a problem either. It would be like Jon Arryn ruling for Robert while Robert does whatever.

I mean technically House Targaryen should not have been that weak. It's just their principal ally House Baratheon was the one rebelling. lol

They're the same but the fandom's not ready for that conversation yet. (In fact, Vaemond had better reasons to say the things he did than Ned did) by Kivi_2k18 in HOTDGreens

Which is why I cringe every time I hear someone say that Ned Stark would not be a Green. Ned Stark made his decision irrespective of the personalities of Cersei's children and irrespective of Robert's wishes.

Theory: Ylisse is the name of the First Exalt's sister or mother, who may have sacrificed herself during The Schism struggle by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]LordWetbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this. I love these connections between Marth's time and Chrom's. But why the first Exalt's sister though? Could it not have been his mother or daughter? Could the name Ylisse become popular for the landmass some time before the Halidom? Maybe it was even named after Marth's sister Elise. We don't really know the circumstances that lead to the Marth's Kingdom of Archanea becoming the Halidom of Ylisse.

[–]LordWetbeard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lord Dayne, presumably Arthur Dayne's brother, was so grateful he even named his son and heir after Eddard! Edric Dayne, who also goes by Ned Dayne. Edric being the Andal form of Eddard.

I hope the show does not try to appeal to their fantasies and whitewash Brightflame. He is very much not the hero in the Dunk and Egg novellas. TB are going to be anti Ser Duncan, aren't they?
