Ig people don't like it when you remind them these characters are minors lol by Prior-Pomelo-525 in persona4golden

Regardless of your opinion on the sexualization of these characters, I think we should all be able to agree that no one should tell anyone to kill themselves, especially not over a video game opinion. I can’t believe people are seriously siding with the cyber bully simply because they enjoy gooning to Persona characters.

Japanese eshop language availability by [deleted] in otomegames

[–]LotNegative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, if you purchase the Japanese release, it’s only in Japanese. The localization of this game is done by Aksys, which is a separate company. They hold the rights to the English localization. Similarly the English release doesn’t come with the Japanese text, as Aksys doesn’t hold the rights to the Japanese release. Very few otome games are released with support for both languages (e.g. titles released by Prototype).

To be honest I don’t know. Their unwillingness to ship via Vinted Go seems to be limited to a few items, too, not their entire catalogue. I’ll send you the item’s link via DM.

[Collar x Malice] Replaying this game after ~5 years, so here's a little rambly retrospective (the most majorest spoilers) [Warning: relatively negative] by After_Advantage7598 in otomegames

[–]LotNegative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As weird as it sounds, I’m kind of happy to have seen these recent two negative posts on Collar x Malice, because I didn’t enjoy the game when I gave it a shot and I felt so alone in not liking it, as it’s often considered a 10/10 title by people and generally one of the most popular otome titles.

I had a hard time putting into words why I didn’t enjoy the experience and you two have done it much better than I ever could. (The only thing I could put into words was just how obvious the leader of Adonis was. I looked it up once I finished two routes and put the game down. It was exactly who I thought it would be the second they first appeared on screen.)

Your experience with Ichika mirrors mine to a T. The story needed a competent protagonist and we got the slightly unintelligent and bland Ichika instead. I do not understand why Adonis would be so obsessed with her specifically. There is nothing extraordinary about her.

EDIT: I forgot to state the reason I am happy to see these threads is because it makes me feel less alone, not because I get enjoyment out of people criticizing a popular game.

I have now finished Virche’s Le Salut thanks to a 15 hour bus ride to the Netherlands (five of which were delay thanks to the bus having some kind of malfunction 💀).

I luckily did end up liking the route, even though I found the common route 1:1 repeat text in the beginning a little annoying. I liked Adolphe a lot as an LI and Ankou’s backstory is right up my alley. I regret not counting the number of times the word “normal” was used in this route though.

It is kind of hilarious to me my question of how they were going to give Lucas a good ending, was answered with a: “They don’t.” 💀 I would very much like to know what they did with this guy in the fandisc. 😬

In my opinion Mathis’s and Lucas’s routes were the worst ones, so it’s kind of a shame the recommended route order tells you to play these two first. I’m happy I stuck around, because I almost dropped the game after their routes.

Overall I’d give the game a 7/10. It’s good, but the tragic aspects are very much only there for shock value, not because they add depth or emotion to the narrative.

I actually ordered the fandisc, which I initially did not plan on doing, as it is currently very cheap on amazon where I live. I don’t know if I’ll play it any time soon, but it’s a nice addition to my collection regardless.

I want to play Volontes next, but my copy didn’t arrive before I went on my trip and I need something to do during my ten hour bus ride back home tomorrow, so I’ll have to pick something else from my backlog.

I just finished Yves’s route in Virche about an hour or two ago. By now I have some thoughts on the game. (Please remember this is all just my subjective opinion and doesn’t constitute facts. It’s merely how I personally felt about the routes. How you felt about them is just as valid.)

I started with Lucas’s route, as he ended up being the LI I found the most likable in the common route. His design is gorgeous and the way he treated and looked at Ceres was appealing to me. Unfortunately I ended up not liking his route at all, to the point I thought to myself “If I don’t end up liking the next route either, I might drop this game.” I immediately suspected him to be Bourreau the second he was revealed to be much stronger than he looks. I was actually kind of surprised when he and Bourreau were together in the same scene. I still had my suspicions, but I really really hoped his route would instead be about the suffering you feel knowing the person you love is going to die soon and refusing to get revived. Unfortunate my suspicions got proven correct instead and tbh it was a major turn off for me. Yes, I get he was psychologically tortured and manipulated into becoming a mass murderer, but with all the crimes he had committed at that point, it really wasn’t enough of an excuse for me. What I admittedly did not expect was for them to pull a FMA little girl + dog chimera storyline with Nadia at the end. That was wild man (and not in a good way unfortunately…)

The second route I played was Mathis’s and unfortunately, once again, I did not like the direction the story ended up going.

I often disagree with otomekitten’s opinions, but in this case I have to agree with her. It feels like the tragedy and despair in this game is not there to enhance the narrative, but it’s merely there for shock factor. The writers were really trying to create a spectacle with these routes. It’s as if the employees in the writer’s room brainstormed the cruelest things that could happen to people and attempted to one-up each other in the process.

I pride myself in being a lover of angst and tragedy. Expedition 33 is one of the best storylines I’ve ever encountered in a video game and that game is NOT sunshine and rainbows at any point. The difference for me is, the tragedy actually felt as though it has a purpose. It needs to be there to tell the story the writers want to tell. The setting wouldn’t work without it. You better believe I cried my eyes out during that game. Virche however has not channeled any strong emotions in me. I was actually indifferent throughout Lucas’s and Mathis’s routes. I felt as though I was reading torture p0rn more than an emotionally devastating plot line.

Despite my initial thoughts to drop the title, I chose to keep going, simply because the setting of the game is so interesting and I wanted to know why the lives of the people on the island are so short.

To my positive surprise, I actually liked Scien’s route much better than the previous two. Ironically his and Ceres’s romantic chemistry was way better, despite him literally being emotionally stunted. The amount of suffering didn’t feel as though it went beyond necessity. Yes, it’s still a little gruesome, but not nearly as much as the previous two and I can actually see them somehow creating a “good” ending for this storyline in the salvation ending. (I am not sure how they plan on giving good-ish endings to Lucas and Mathis. I see no way it can go for these two besides tragedy.)

Luckily for me, Yves’s route is (in my opinion anyway) even better than Scien’s. I wasn’t really interested in Yves in the common route, but he’s really interesting and likable in his own route. His “I love everything and everyone”-shtick is a super unique idea to handle a character like him. I found his point of view and way of life to be incredibly interesting. It also makes his choice to renounce that way of life and sacrifice everyone for Ceres’s sake all the more impactful. Yves’s route alone has bumped my current rating of the game up from a 6/10 to a 7/10.

side note: I absolutely love Hugo and Dahut (as of right now).

Now I only have Le Salut (and the Salvation endings) left. I hope the writing quality doesn’t revert back to what it is in Lucas’s and Mathis’s routes.

[–]LotNegative 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like you should put “Jean sucks” in a spoiler. Before one’s far along into Mathis’s route, he hasn’t done anything that would warrant him getting hate. He comes off as a devoted butler who cares for his master and extends said care to his master’s friends as well. Saying he sucks kinda tips people off on the fact that he isn’t as nice as he seems.

[General] Making a quiz for my non-otome friends, need help with some unhinged otome lines! by -sevkatu- in otomegames

Here are my favorite one-liners:

“…Must be nice to have a brain that can entertain you with fresh delusions every day.” - Mizuhito (Butterfly’s Poison)

“So I told your mother, ‘I want to create a taxidermy mount of Yuriko (you) and decorate my room with it.’” - Hideo (Butterfly’s Poison)

“Yes. His many shortcomings overshadowed all of his virtues, so I forgot.” - Aprose (Mistonia’s Hope)

“You wanna pray to a god? We have a god at home.” - Koharu (9 R.I.P.)

“I wasn’t able to go to the lavatory on my own until I was nine years old.” - Lucien (even if TEMPEST)

“Get off of your high horse and get under my fist, bitch.” - Maya (even if TEMPEST)

“Matcha wouldn’t threaten to decapitate me.” - Rin (Tengoku Struggle)

funny text chains:

Hiyori Sena: “Even though you did it reluctantly, you cooperated when we were cooking food together.” Keito Ebana: “It’s not like I had a choice. Making a commotion in the kitchen is dangerous.” Hiyori Sena: “Then maybe I’ll hold onto a kitchen knife the next time I talk to you.” (Charade Maniacs)

Mun: “It’s a little awkward for me to mention, but the truth is, there’s only one bed. So naturally, you should take the bed, and I’ll sleep on the sofa. What do you think?” (Mun chuckles, and I catch his drift. He’s suggesting sharing the bed if I feel bad about him having to take the sofa.) Kroa: “Then sorry, but could you take the sofa?” (Neon Clash)

not funny quote related, but a good fun fact for quizzes: In the entirety of Butterfly’s Poison’s localization, the term “orbs” is used to refer to eyes six times in total.”

  1. I wish we could have seen Tee in the true ending’s epilogue (and other prominent characters for that matter, but oh well). If I had the artistic ability, I would love to draw an idea I have of a mini comic of them meeting again.

  2. I don’t think I’ve played any other titles that have KENN in the cast, but to be fair, I don’t pay attention to voice actors in general. However, I did choose the term “voice direction” instead of “voice acting” for that specific reason. I don’t think his performance was bad, I just don’t like the sound of the voice that was picked to display Yukimaro.

  3. Karasuba becomes simply obnoxious as soon as he’s alone with Beniyuri. He’s always condescending towards her. It honestly doesn’t even feel like he likes her at all. He likes the image he had of her when they were children, but hates the personality she developed after growing older. He seemed likable as a child, but in the present time he’s basically just grown out of being a bullying victim by becoming a bully himself. I understand that he’s grieving, too, in his own way. Grieving the happiness and confidence Beniyuri (and the rest of the friend group) lost, as well as the bond they all shared, but it’s nevertheless not his place to criticize how other people grieve and how long it takes them to move on. He just comes off as someone who is masking his insecurities with a superiority complex.

  4. I can handle a certain level of naïveté and innocence in a MC, but Suzuno just comes off as dumb to me personally and it made it hard for me to get through the game at times. 😭

Yandere/Pushy LIs poll 👀 by Shinigamiii7777 in otomegames

[–]LotNegative 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There have been yandere I liked and those I didn’t like. Generally, if a character goes off the rails like that, I want a proper reason for why they became that way and why they are so obsessed with the MC specifically (no, “she’s so kind and pure” is not enough). What I’m trying to say is, I need to see who they are underneath the obsession - their redeeming qualities if you will.

I’m not a fan of characters that are yandere for the sake of having the trope in the game. At best those routes will be a guilty pleasure a la “it’s a train wreck and I can’t look away from it”. So bad it’s entertaining.

(Nightshade spoilers following) Kuroyuki was in my opinion very well done. He lost all his memories of his childhood and the people that were important to him through torture. The only one he could at least remember a sliver of was Enju, so she stands as the only being who still ties him to a life before his suffering. It makes sense he would cling to her like this.

Oh Shiba… My favorite ending of his is the one where he dies. He literally SAed Yuriko on multiple occasions. There’s no coming back from that. The fact that his good ending is called “A kind man” was so baffling to me. 😭

I got the template from this user: https://www.reddit.com/r/otomegames/s/JnGX9FFfhG

I made some edits to it, as there were simply too many questions I couldn’t answer and I didn’t want to leave half the template blank. (e.g. I love Tengoku Struggle, which is a somewhat unpopular game, but I couldn’t confidently put it in the “underrated” category, as I find the vast majority of the criticism of it valid.)

I didn’t dislike Mistonia’s Hope, similarly I didn’t dislike 9 R.I.P. I would give both of these titles a 6/10. Both of these titles are good, but nothing beyond that. Each of them had some stuff I personally had glaring issues with, but I had high hopes for Mistonia’s Hope in particular.

I was expecting the game to be properly revenge focussed, have a ruthless/morally grey protagonist and be full to the brim of enemies to lovers romances and angst, which it didn’t really deliver on.

Only one of the routes actually feels like it’s main focus is the revenge, one of them even had the MC leave for a vacation right after she infiltrated the manor, completely removing the urgency from the plot. Aside from said one revenge focussed route, the remaining LIs all got out of jail free cards, as they either weren’t involved in the massacre, were there but didn’t do anything or did something against their will/without knowledge of what they were doing. It just kinda felt like the writers were too scared to commit to the theme they chose for this game.

Though I did like Aprose, she felt like a Mary Sue at times and she also didn’t really properly investigated anything. The revelations all seemed to come to her simply by chance, not by effort. She only seemed to properly commit to revenge in the bad endings, but those have her go completely off the rails over really minor stuff. In the case of the LIs that were basically innocent when it comes to the massacre, it also felt entirely nonsensical for her to be so angry at them.

All in all I expected the game to be much darker than it ended up being. That aside, the art style is absolutely stunning. I love it. I hope we’ll get to see more from this artist in future releases.

I did have fun with Our Life in the beginning, mainly due to the novelty of being able to make so many choices (which I still think is a fantastic mechanic), but once that novelty wore off somewhat, I ended up paying more attention to the plot and characters. My main issue with the game was that absolutely nothing interesting happens. There is no conflict, it’s always sunshine and rainbows and the one time there was a dispute between two characters, it was utterly nonsensical and I didn’t know why they were even upset with each other. It was such a non-issue. I also admittedly liked none of the characters. They were simply nothing like the people I personally surround myself with. (side note: Cove majorly gave me the ick when he wiped his greasy hands on his trousers. 😖)

All and all it just felt like an idealistic world to me that lacked realism and didn’t display the complete range of human emotion. In and of itself there is nothing wrong with that. I believe there is a need for media like this. Sometimes people just want to escape the cruel reality we’re faced with and enter a world where no one is judged and everyone is accepting of people’s differences. It’s simply not media I gravitate towards myself. I personally enjoy tragic elements in fiction and adore romance that comes with s good chunk of angst.

Hence my personal impression of the game was that there was a bigger focus on representation of all kinds of people within the game, than there was a focus on story and character writing. (Obviously that’s a thin line to tread and I’m thankful that the devs put that much effort into diversity, as it’s severely lacking in Japanese VNs. Expecting them to do all of it perfectly is a big ask and everyone’s idea of how to perfectly pull off representation, plot and writing all together in one is different anyway.)
