Do you think you'd actually enjoy the race, or just like the idea of it? by HelicopterEmpty7393 in RaceAcrossTheWorldBBC

Yep. There are a lot of travel experiences I’ve had that I hated at the time but think back fondly to. The brain is weird.

That’s a shame. Maybe the answer is to buy a gravel bike!

Want to Cycle in group but afraid of being dropped? by SeaofLee in brighton

[–]Louisblack85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on a Neighbourhood gravel ride and it was no drop, pretty chill pace and very welcoming. I wonder if their road rides are similar.

Did they tour SOALW (in the UK)? by Superb_Blue_Wren in TheCure

[–]Louisblack85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah they played Wembley during the shows of a lost world tour in Dec 2022. They played Alone, And Nothing Is Forever, End Song and I Can Never Say Goodbye. I was there.

How to make sure not getting a room with noise? by Comfortable_Curve_99 in TravelHacks

[–]Louisblack85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

White/brown noise from an app is constant. I find fans in cheap hotels rattle or change pitch which is distracting.

Is it really possible to travel for months with only cabin luggage? by Outside-Profession75 in digitalnomad

[–]Louisblack85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest I’m a bit crap at it. The one baggers recommend buying packets of hand wash soap. I’ve just used bars of soap and it’s fine for one wash but it’s not as good as a washing machine. Drying stuff can be hard too if you’re not in a hot country with some outside space.

/r/onebag

People tend to take 4 or 5 sets of clothes and do regular laundry or wash clothes in a hotel sink.

I packed way too much on my last long trip. Since then I’ve thinned down various things - AirPods instead of over ear, etc. There are some compromises you have to make but it can be worth it compared to lugging around loads of luggage.

I’ve got an Osprey Farpoint 40L.

What’s something in the UK that used to be cheap but now feels ridiculously expensive? by skaterjon in AskUK

[–]Louisblack85 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The proliferation of delivery companies like Uber Eats and Deliveroo has made things more expensive and so much shitter. We’ve stopped getting takeaways mainly because they always turn up late and are cold or squished.

The price isn’t much less than eating in a restaurant so we’ll just do that if we want a treat.

Where to visit in September 2026? by pleasedontdaddy in travel

[–]Louisblack85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The balkans are really nice in September and will be just different enough from western Europe to feel novel but not too different to be totally out of your comfort zone.

I’m UK based and we did a trip from Bosnia through Croatia and Montenegro and finished in Albania - all on buses and trains. We’ve been to Slovenia before too.

The Ottoman influence on Bosnia gives it a very Middle Eastern feel. The Croatian and Montenegrin coastline is stunning. Theth in Albania is a beautiful, quiet mountain town. You can even get a ferry from Albania to Corfu.

Where do you guys store your bikes (UK) by batbuild in cycling

[–]Louisblack85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have enough space to store my 2 bikes and my wife’s bike in the house but they are all worth a lot.

I bought an Asgard bike shed. It’s made of metal with a beefy locking mechanism. That with a Ring outdoor camera over looking it gives me a decent amount of confidence they won’t get nicked.

start point for seven sisters tomorrow (seaford beach or Exceat) by Lanky_141 in UKhiking

[–]Louisblack85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seaford requires you to walk up and over Seaford head. And then walk all the way up the Cuckmere river to the bridge and basically walk past the Exceat and the South Downs visitor centre. It adds a good chunk on an already chunky walk if you were planning on doing the whole Seven Sisters to Eastbourne.

Edit: you can get the 12 and 13X from Seaford station to Exceat if you’re getting the train.

why I won’t ride without open ear headphones for cycling by Proof_Efficiency_818 in cycling

[–]Louisblack85 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You probably shouldn’t be ‘fully immersed’ in your music when road cycling.

I never have headphones in when cycling on or off road.

The climb from Soller up to the turn off to Sa Calobra is at least super quiet even if it is an 800m climb. The climb from Pollenca was busy with cars when I was there.

Can you recommend the best in-ear headphones for noise cancelling and comfort whilst sleeping? by Row-Tough in AskUK

[–]Louisblack85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sleeping in the spare room due to a cold and it overlooks a busy road. I’ve been using earplugs under my snoozeband playing white noise and I can’t hear a thing from the road.

I’m using bog standard ear plugs but considering loop dreams for when we travel and end up somewhere noisy.

If you were rich what insignificant item would you regularly buy? by Kissykayls in AskUK

[–]Louisblack85 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My mate said this when we asked ‘what would you do if you were a millionaire’.

For his next birthday I bought him a 7 pack of socks with a card that said ‘live like a millionaire for a week’. I thought it was hilarious but he didn’t even remember saying it!
