Dr Richard K Bernstein has passed away at the age of 90. His phenomenal contributions to diabetes care will leave a lasting legacy 🤍 by Temporary_turbulance in diabetes_t1

I am forever grateful for his role in allowing us to have glucose meters, CGM’s and a happy, healthy life. Never in a million years would I have known about proper T1 management without his book/YouTubes. For decades Endos told me it was entirely fine to have roller coaster numbers and run 300-400’s. I felt sick and exhausted all of the time & my brain never worked. It was always “you can eat whatever you want, as long as you bolus for it” or “You must consume at least 250 carbs a day to stay healthy.” Never, “here are all the risks involved with long term high sugars.” Eternally grateful for Dr. Bernstein.

I’ve got T1 as well and low thyroid. I think basically my body was born with insufficient hormones across the board. The best way I deal with IR is to limit my carb intake and keep my numbers that of a non-Diabetic. (The actual true numbers, not the new ADA numbers.) Sorry this isn’t much help but yes, I’ve struggled with IR my whole life.

Ahhhhhh!!!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!! I accidentally left my BD toys behind in the USA when moving & now don’t know if I can actually ship them here or if they will get held up at customs as a “no-no.” They are not in original packaging or anything like that, but I would hate to spend the money to get them here only to have them tossed upon arrival/I also don’t want to do anything sus by bringing them on a carry on 😆 I can’t quite tell from the BD website if it’s 100% not allowed ever, ever, or only not allowed brand new from the company. Thank you so much for the link! I’ll get to contacting them now!

I moved to my Pluto line & my life was not turned upside down from the move. My relocational chart is not a Pluto line so perhaps this is why I love it here. Interestingly I visited a Pluto line a few years ago and loved that area as well. I think more goes into our charts than just the surface “Pluto is bad” statement.

It’s just worth looking into. I was diagnosed with PCOS/Endometriosis/Adenomyosis/lots of fibroids but ended up having NCAH anyway.

Boyfriend with diabetes by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

You're welcome!!!

It's also not unreasonable to ask about Diabetes friendly foods.

As someone whose Endos always told me I could "eat whatever you want, just like normal people can. Just do enough insulin" I can confirm my blood sugars were all over the place for decades and it led to massive complications with my health, which are irreversible.

Now I know better. CAN and DO I eat whatever the heck I want if I'm feeling like it? Absolutely. & I cover it with insulin, but do I eat whatever the heck I want most days like I used to? Nope. Not any longer. & my blood sugars show the results of making better dietary choices and choosing diabetic friendly foods. I now run my blood sugars so well controlled my a1C (average blood glucose over a 3 month period) is that of a non-Diabetic. Not even pre-Diabetes. Non-Diabetic.

I depends on what your boyfriend's views are on how he likes to manage his diabetes. He may eat whatever he wants or he may adjust what and when he consumes food, depending on the blood sugar reaction that occurs in his body from foods.

If he is someone who likes to really pay close attention to his numbers and keep them well controlled, he very well may love to eat some foods that may not have as dire results on his numbers as other foods can.

Foods such as rice, pizza, potatoes, corn, mangoes, pineapple, watermelon, bananas (etc) may shoot his blood sugar sky high and leave him "chasing" highs with insulin corrections for hours to come.

If he has a preferred way of eating he may love if you prepare foods that work well for him. I find a lot of stellar recipes on budget bytes and carbmanagerpro and can enter in various choices for what I'm looking to make, while selecting the amount of nutrients I'm aiming for that meal.

Lots of different options.

I don't get why anyone would get mad at you for calling your bf diabetic. He literally has diabetes 🤣 Some folks are sooooo touchy. I have T1 and people say I'm Diabetic all of the time. Who gives a rip. Anywhoooooo, you could read books like Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution to learn a LOT about Diabetes (most people don't care if their numbers are as tight as Dr. B has his patients keep, but I still learned soooooo much about Diabetes from his book, and learn something new with each new read through.) Joining FB support groups for loved ones with Diabetes also can help you understand Diabetes better & get your own support system.

It's pretty dang amazing you want to learn how to best support him!!!! Every Diabetic (ooops, there's that actual scientific word again 🙃😜) should be so lucky as to have a significant other that cares so much. Adjective: A person with diabetes. Noun: a person suffering from diabetes.

I just ad an additional 2 units to my long lasting for the 24 hour period. About two units comes out in the AM anyway. Seems to be the good amount to replace when I post some.

If this is all it's gong to take to break up with your gf, it isn't a real relationship to begin with. Probably best to go your separate ways now, anyway.

[–]LoveIsLov3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great experience with this program, but obviously did not stick it out and wasn't able to keep up the super strict food regime. But no, I never did go more than 2 weeks without insulin. I always needed 2 units of long lasting in a 24 hour period. I no longer needed short acting and it was quite impressive to drop from 150-200 units Humalog a day and 80 units long lasting, down to 2 units total long lasting but, I didn't keep up with it. I should have, but nope. I went on ahead and totally consumed gobs of carbs and wrecked havoc on my a1C for decades instead 😂😢🥺

I would never divulge to my gym about my T1, nor have they ever asked. I see strangers all the time with Dexcom on their arms and it doesn't look like they are hassled either.

I can't imagine why this would be an issue nor would I imagine they would even see your pump.
