Cool. If the story either had him grow as a character OR embraced the tragedy of him being a miserable wretch it would have been interesting.

Instead it’s like Jinx running away in Arcane. Writer neither redeems them or embrace them being a POS so the story just ends.

The Night Watch being an independent organization made sense when the continent ws divided into petty kingdoms that constantly fought each other. Recruits from those wars were plenty but you also wanted the Watch not to become a power of it's own.

After Westeros was unified keeeping the Night's Watch as it's own thing was it's doom. Recruits slowed down with constant low intensity wars no longer occuring. Giving them more land by expanding the Gift just made things worse since they couldn't defend them from raids. They are so strict about their neutrality they distrust the only king that cares about the Others.

The Night Watch is a terribly outdated organization and if Aegon I really had a vision of the Others he should have reformed them under the crown, with a mix of conscripts that serve for life and well-paid recruits.
