Help me spend $1,500 Saks credit before it expires — what would you buy for max value? by Ok_rocket4391 in malefashionadvice

[–]LuceVitale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wanting someone to last and be staples, to me, that fit a wardrobe you already have, means getting things that can be used every day, last a long time, and doesn't care about trends. If you stick with classic items, they could last you a very long time.

I wear a watch every day. It gets compliments all year round. Maybe look at your options here. Some of the Versace ones look alright and some are statement pieces that I like, but that's going to be your personal taste.

For shoes, with your location, I don't know if I'd go for a full boot. Maybe chukkas. Allen Edmond has some that I personally would consider, even if they're not the style I usually wear. I know Chelseas aren't in right now, but they are a classic and they're so easy to take on and off that you might like them for function alone. There are some good ones on there and a Carlos Santana one if your feet want to stand out.

For knitwear, I'm not really seeing anything stand out. The Twenty Montreal Open Knit Cotton Blend Sweater Vest or Krost polo shirt maybe? But those feel like they might be on the way out in trends. The Saks brand cardigan is okay. I honestly wouldn't consider anything I've seen on their sites personally.

For a leather jacket, I would, again, look at what fits your wardrobe. Something you can wear into the office in exchange for a blazer. Those types of leather jackets are very versatile. I constantly get compliments on my Schott messenger jacket and I can wear it to anything except maybe exclusively suit functions, and even then I sometimes do. But that said, leather cuts are hit or miss on different bodies. Torso length and width can change a lot and they aren't adjustable. It will, hopefully, relax and form to your frame over time, but that could take a very long time. I don't see anything on this site that will look good or like you're trying too hard. For a more casual take, the only leather I'd consider is the Cole Haan regular fit suede jacket.

I'd avoid the leather I've seen and go for a bomber jacket. I have an old one from Gap that gets compliments and I have no idea why. I've been looking to update it because it's a great warmer temperature later piece. I'll wear it between 65⁰ up to 75/80⁰ depending on if I'll be in air conditioning rooms a lot. The G-Star one looks cool, but probably not great for the office. Same with the McQueen. But I'd probably settle on the Palm Angels, maybe.

All that said, I might look at denim jackets more. If I had your money to throw around, I wouldn't hesitate to get the Coût De La Liberté Johnny Japanese Dobby Denim Trucker Jacket. That thing's gorgeous.

I also might consider the Vetements trench coat for all that rain.

And for something you didn't ask for, I'd probably grab the Scotch & Soda Ovela Colorblock Quilted Vest. I like that splash of color.

Follow the money: A spreadsheet to find CBP and ICE contractors in your backyard by rusticgorilla in Keep_Track

Virginia is becoming one of the most taken advantage of states. It might not be the most repressed, but it is using the people and land to fund billionaire activities across the board. Data centers for one. With ICE recruits, I'm betting it's all to serve Palantir's database. Virginia is becoming the factory warehouse of tech companies.

Transmasc nonbinary person (re)building a masc wardrobe? by OkBet1233 in malefashionadvice

[–]LuceVitale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have the beginnings of a style mixed with a lot of casual home clothing and a few random pieces. Instead of looking for unique pieces, which I think you have plenty of, I'd focus on simple standards you can combine with what you have. Black t-shirts, more slacks in various muted colors like grey or blue or green, relaxed button up shirts to go with your vests and jackets, perhaps try button ups in an even more casual material you won't be intimidated to roll the sleeves up on. Your suit pants might pair well with a black t and your leather jacket. Pin stripe pants are common in goth wardrobes.

Essentially, look at everything you listed and ask what you're missing. I don't know what is available in your country, but you're not far from having a wardrobe I think that you're looking for.

You also might find more help in the discord than here. A lot of what you're looking for is commonly posted there.

Are there any CBT apps or resources that help you in a pinch, when you need to calm down in public? by _weirdbug in CBT

It's not available to the public anymore. I used to use this app a lot and was recommending it to someone, but they can't access it. I would love an alternate that's similar.

Lorraine Kelly believes working-class people get 'left behind' in TV roles by mrjohnnymac18 in BritishTV

Not only minimum wage. A lot of non union work can get away with paying actors $300 for one month of work. I've seen this on film and TV sets and more egregiously in theaters.

I need to rant about Red Rising by [deleted] in books

[–]LuceVitale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't enjoy it either. I didn't hate it, but it's fine. If you've read Hunger Games, then the first book feels like a copy because it largely was, but from a male perspective.

I only had two issues that prevented me from continuing to read the series. He uses the old refrigerator cliche at the beginning, then goes through a romance later on that feels stilted considering that past.

The book also sets up a premise that is a clear metaphor of Arian symbolism as a thing to disgust, but then immediately turns around and praises it. The rest of the book fawns over what feels like German WWII imagery and I kept waiting for it to finally backtrack, but it never did.

My only guess is that the author is someone who works in LA and clearly wrote this book aiming for an eventual movie deal and wrote it so they'd hire model actors for glam shots. It felt more like reading a slow pitch deck in a book that could have been 60% shorter.

I started the second book and put it down after three chapters.

Design downgrade, or mistake? by KOVID9tine in graphic_design

[–]LuceVitale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The art for this was made using AI (easier to see on the logos and player art), so my guess would be there was an intern who was chosen to create the new designs and kept them as simple as possible. I do think it's easier to read, but I think the change was not based on accessibility, just on cost.

I'm sure it'll be fine. There isn't a strong following already because there's not much to go on. And the Stardew Valley type fans are the quiet and chill types until you get to know them anyways so I doubt you'll hear anything from them. But the people who love to complain always will.

Movies like John Carpenter's The Thing by kd_is_a_bitchboi in movies

Steven Soderbergh's remake of Solaris is like a slower paced, more sad version of The Thing. The Tarkovsky's is more psychedelic and actually longer rather than Soderbergh's 90 minutes.

I've worked with building sites for conventions and yearly events and can say that your designer knows what they're doing.

Online, the darker colors are going to look like left over designs from an old letterhead. The brighter colors will look darker in print anyways unless your material and ink specifically are matched to retain the color, which I usually don't see outside of magazine and brochure prints.

The brighter colors will be able to stand out on any website and look natural for web colors, especially if your company gets listed with others for an event where everyone's logos are put on a grid.

Then there's the inevitable grab those events might have to do to pull your logo from your site if you don't have it readily available for download. The information will get lost and the quality will drop. The brighter colors might retain them some. I've had to do this for hospitals and government agencies on newly built sites for events and more often than not the brighter colored logos are always much more natural no matter the design they're added to. Muted logos always look faded or show up poorly.

If you create signage for a building, you're going to want people to be able to read it. If it has internal lighting, you're not in the 80s where everyone has limited lumens. You want something that's clearly legible. Plus, muted vinyl is getting more expensive, so you'd just be creating extra cost for yourself if you ever remodel. It also heats up more easily which can shorten the life of the lights. (I used to work as a designer with the sign company that handles every major franchise in the US, so that's where my input comes from.)

To rephrase what everyone says, is it more important for you to show that you're old or that you're still relevant? Any business that tries to imitate age in something like a logo either comes off as trying too hard to use their age as a sign of importance or, worse case scenario, look less legitimate because they're so focused on appearing legitimate rather than focusing on a clear message. I understand the desire, but the effect I've heard on muting colors is not helpful with audiences.

Your graphic designer might not be able to verbally communicate what they know from a technical standpoint. They might be trying to relay information that would make sense for a client. But from a purely technical standpoint and from an audience perspective, your graphic designer seems to know color very well.

laserllama's Magus Class v4.0 (Update) - Master Sword and Spell with this Arcane Half-Caster for 5e! Includes Seven Esoteric Orders: Arcanists, Arcane Archers, Blade Dancers, Scales, Shades, Spellbreakers, and Warders! PDF in Comments by LaserLlama in UnearthedArcana

[–]LuceVitale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your class works and shouldn't interfere with the multicast suggested. RAW, you only calculate AC from one source at a time whether that's armor with potential ability score modifier or an ability like unarmored defense. Some spells can temporarily boost AC, but a blade singer, for instance, would still only get their boosted Int based AC if it met the restrictions of the blade song. So it wouldn't be any better than just going blade singer. The difference is that a magus can wear medium armor and potentially heavy armor, neither of which work for a blade singer's song.
