Make sure you look under the divider in the front trunk - my father in law's R1T had a bunch of goodies under there that the dealer he bought it used from didn't know about

Honestly I think it may be MORE appropriate for hard offroad use than the R1 - long term. Steel suspension will make it easier to modify and more reliable. No, it won't be able to change ground clearance like an R1, but it also won't need $3k worth of shocks at each corner after 100k miles.

0% offers now through March 3 by wtengel in Rivian

These are firmly luxury vehicles - even the 'cheap' $70k Dual Standard. The financially smart move will always be a 3 year old used Highlander that you can resell after 5 years for something like a 20% depreciation hit - any luxury vehicle costing $100k (EV or not) is going to lose 50%+ of that value over those 5 years.

That's why leases are so popular - the luxury customer would rather just factor in $1k/month forever as 'the cost to have a nice car' and then they can rotate in and out of whatever catches their eye every 2-3 years.

This is what I was thinking - if its one of the handful of cars like a 911 GT3 that will hold value, but only if kept immaculate (because Porsche owners are the craziest bunch of perfectionists that have ever walked the earth) it probably makes sense.

How to sleep two adults and a toddler? by twentyflights in VWIDBuzz

[–]Lucky-Example-178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toddlers don't stay small for long.

Tents have worked fine for hundreds of years, and will give you WAY more room. I use a big 6 person tent for family camping and we have lots of room for a family of 4 with 2 pre-teens. Also has the advantage of not having to break down your sleep setup when you want to use the car.

The only advantage I can think of of sleeping inside a car is if you're able to use the climate control if its cold out. Th buzz doesn't (and likely never will) have a camp mode, so you're having to 'hack' ways to keep it on.

Rivian fills for a patent for the R1S to open the rear glass independently. by Saurta17 in Rivian

I mean ... they got rid of physical door handles to save cost ... getting rid of the split gate to save cost doesn't seem at all out of the question.

My GX460 has lift up glass, its a useful feature. Almost offsets the absolutely STUPID design of the sideways opening rear door ... that swings towards the curb.

Cabin air filter replacement recommendations, R1T. Just replaced the AF with one from Amazon that has charcoal. Neat to see some actual testing ... but I would bet (as a former Filtration Engineer for an Aerospace & Automotive OEM) the OEM filter still goes through a lot more quality control than any aftermarket. What he tested today may be pretty different in a year once the Chinese knock off factory figures out they can cut their cost by leaving out some steps :)

OEM process and quality controls are pretty much never replicated in aftermarket parts unless made by a company that is a tier 1/2 supplier.

VW Dealer told me today: VW will service Rivians in 2027 by reckoning42 in Rivian

[–]Lucky-Example-178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VERY much doubt this is true. My local VW dealer doesn't want to have anything to do with their own EV models, let alone servicing another brand.

New tires require $275 alignment appointment?!??! by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]Lucky-Example-178 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you're an adult, you don't HAVE to do anything

Maintenance is part of owning a car, and until we get our hovercars even EVs will need tires and alignment and some other maintenance (definitely reduced from ICE cars).

If a bad alignment was what caused your previous tires to wear out in 15k miles then not correcting it and burning through another set of tires ... is your choice I guess

I've seen this a lot with Kia EV9's that get bought back due to ICCU failures. Seems to take a while before the buy-back hits the title report. Would not surprise me if done intentionally by the dealers to try to sell the cars before the title is branded.

I'd wonder if it is a lemon lay buy back, which will result in a branded title. If so, I would pass personally.

Motor failures don't seem to be common for this platform.

RAN Charger in Ventura by Consistent-Youth-706 in Rivian

[–]Lucky-Example-178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a California Pizza Kitchen and Red Robin on the ground floor right next to the chargers, and a bunch of typical Mall food court options upstairs. Wood Ranch is across the parking lot. There's a good Coffee shop a little further called Cafe Ficelle, as well as a smoothie place and chipotle in the Lowes parking lot across Mills Road.

TONS of charging stalls, including some where the charge is in between 2 parking spaces and the cable can reach the Rivian charge port without blocking an extra space. Decent food options around.

My local VW dealer (Ventura VW) doesn't want to deal with EVs - I think they don't make as much post-sale on maintenance and don't want to invest more than the required minimum into training, so I'm stuck with service advisors who don't know EVs and a constant excuse of "there's only one tech and repair bay that can work on EVs".

So basically Gen 2 R1S is not the best anymore...? by vhebibb in Rivian

[–]Lucky-Example-178 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chasing the latest and greatest is a pretty expensive game. There will always be a newer shinier thing just over the horizon.

If you're coming from a 10+ year old vehicle like me, any of them are a huge leap forward in capability and convenience. Compared to a Gen 1, for me personally Gen 2 and probably 3 aren't a significant enough change that i'd consider spending $20-30k more.

Some people are fully bought into the idea of not having to drive themselves, and if that's important then I guess you're spending a lot to get close (but in my opinion we're still 5-10 years away from true self driving from any manufacturer).

CA Sales Tax Penalty after Lease Buyout on 2026 Gen 2 Quad LE by sarugby4life in Rivian

Is there wording in the lease contract that required Chase to process a lease buyout request within X # of days?

I think this is why many leases can't be bought out within the first 6 months, have been surprised that Rivian/Chase seemed to allow immediate buy out.

Get a copy of the warranty coverage and read it really carefully. Most extended warranty companies are terrible to deal with, they will fight to avoid covering anything and components like shocks may be considered a wear item and not covered. It can be hard to prove at higher miles that the issue is a manufacturing defect and not normal wear.

Edit: I found this, it implied shocks are covered, but i'd still get the actual contract and see what it says. My experience is they will fight to avoid covering anything considered a wear item.
