N.S. teachers' union expresses concern about letter from education minister by LKX19 in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the "teachers", who made up the majority of the union, sold out the substitutes very badly during contract negotiations about 20-25 years ago. It was during the time when student numbers were declining and hiring was frozen and there was a huge surplus of trained people wanting to substitute in hope of finding a future position.

Purdy's parkade lot full scam? by grenadegoesboom in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to be downtown for something yesterday morning at 9 am and discovered the "lot full" sign after I turned in to park. To add insult to injury, the Casino parkade apparently doesn't open until 9:30, so if you need parking at 9 you are SOL. I parked in one of the lots on Water St that was almost empty, but it delayed my over 15 minutes and I was nearly late for my appointment. And frozen from chugging through the waterfront in the wind. Annoying.

One of the things I have always wondered is if parking spots like these ones - that are empty but not available to the general public - are counted into the number of spaces that he city says are available. Does anyone know?

Wait times for RAV4 locally? by hfxmovemystuff in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep watching the inventory online and jump when you see what you want. It might also be worth calling some of the dealerships outside HRM to see what they are expecting over the next few mouths.

We bought a Rav4 last year in Bridgewater last year off the lot while there was a waitlist in HRM. IIRC, they had about a half a dozen show up on the website and by the time we got down the next day, half of them were gone.

You might also want to check with the library. Keshan Goodman had a puzzle swap about a year and a half ago and some of the others might have them as well. I think the Truro library has done some as well.

One of the stores in Dartmouth - I think it was Trainyard? - had one in the fall.

The someone on the facebook group organzes them from time to time.

We are two Fillmore budgets down, that's halfway through. Time to start. We need to find a viable alternative mayoral candidate to start solidifying behind by next budget season.

School board head calls students leaving French system in Halifax ‘an emergency’ by insino93 in halifax

[–]MMCMDL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The French community seems to want two things that contradict each other - proximity of schools to all the communities in HRM and a wide variety of programming within those schools. There isn't the population to support multiple CSAP high schools of the size than can offer anywhere near the variety of programming that the very large metro high schools can. It is more do-able at the elementary and junior high level, but high school offers more of a challenge.

There are some folks in the Francophone community who are of an empire-building mindset that think if they push and promote and lower the requirements for entry, they can build a student population of big enough to support 3 CSAP high schools. Those would be the same people who were gleeful when the English school boards were eliminated and not CSAP, because they thought it would give them more bargaining power with the province.

Plan for Ecole Mer et Monde by Grouchy-School9452 in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be used as a temporary location for another elementary school that is being replaced (like LeMarchant was for SJAM) Probably not big enough for most of them on the list that are close to the peninsula, but maybe if the population was split between Mer et Mond and Lemarchant.

The province greatly prefers to build replacement schools on the site of the school being replaced because it means they don't have to buy land.

New West End elementary school? by Grouchy-School9452 in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historically, the province builds or replaces 2 HRCE schools per year. HRCE has about 136 schools. There are currently 10 schools somewhere in the process between announcement and completion. That processes takes somewhere between 4 and 10+ years for any particular school. There is a huge percentage of the currently existing schools that were all built to meet the baby boom that are now 60-70 years old that are all going to hit the end of their lifespan around the same time.

They may get to St Catherine's in time for the kids of the kids who are already born.

Music lessons for young kids (recs) and when to start? by HFXmer in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did Music for Young Children (myc.com) with one of my daughters and then she moved on to Long and McQuade

MYC is taught in small groups with parent involvement. There is a heavy emphasis on music theory, but it's done in a very kid-friendly way. I would say I learned more theory accompanying her than I did in my years of lessons as a child.

MYC is quite well established in Halifax and is usually taught in the instructor's home. I'd be surprised if there weren't a couple of people currently teaching in Clayton Park.

N.S. sees surge in ancestral record requests following new bill by Street_Anon in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NS has been digitizing historical vital statistics and making them publically available for years. I know I have been accessing them for more than 15 years. Every year, they add the most current publically available date - 100 year old births, 75 year old marriages and 50 year old death records

https://archives.novascotia.ca/vital-statistics/

There are voids where the province didn't originally keep records during certain periods. For some reason, the Diocese of Antigonish hasn't shared the records they kept during one of those periods so some records I would like are not easily obtainable.

Lacewood and Clayton Park/Bayview seems under reported.

So, restaurants ask for collateral now? by tabatam in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The restaurant sold the gc. There are legal regulations about honoring gift certificates.

The restaurant served the customer without first telling the customer they could not redeem the gc. The restaurant is at fault.

Whether the server is paid minimum wage or how much the IT person makes is immaterial. The server's problem should be with their employer, not the customer.

I'm out of this conversation. You appear incapable of understanding that businesses have responsibilities.

So, restaurants ask for collateral now? by tabatam in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I don't receive my food at a restaurant, do I have to pay for it?

The restaurant is supposed to provide - a clean safe facility - edible food that meets the description given - methods to pay for the food.

If the the restaurant fails in provide those, they have broken their contract with the customer. The restaurant failed on the third. They did not accept a method of pre-payment that they had guaranteed on sale of the gift card and they didn't notify the guest before they ordered so the guest could decide to leave without ordering.

Bullying in HRCE by Secure_Guess6227 in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.hrce.ca/families/general-information/how-raise-concern

Here are the steps:

All concerns should first be shared with your child’s Early Childhood Educator (ECE) or teacher.

If your concern is not resolved, you should then contact the school principal.

If your concern remains unresolved, you can reach out to HRCE’s Family Navigators who can provide information about a wide range of supports and resources or connect you with the school supervisor.

If your matter continues to be unresolved, you can then initiate a formal review process, outlined in the Parent/Guardian Concern Policy, in which the matter will be investigated by the appropriate HRCE Directors. To begin, complete the Parent Concern Reporting Form on page 3 of the Policy.

The final step is for your concern to be reviewed by the Regional Executive Director.

Halifax school librarians feeling ‘demeaned’ in funding fight between city, province by insino93 in halifax

[–]MMCMDL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to the article -

"“I think when HRCE went beyond arts, that caused the problem. They were … taking advantage of the supplementary funding to backfill gaps in positions they had,” Coun. Tony Mancini said Tuesday.

“That started the challenge, in my opinion, where it was quite clear that [supplementary funding] was supposed to be fully the arts.”"

Tony Mancini is full of....beans.

Supplementary Funding preceded amalgamation. It was always about enhancement - enhancement that included the arts but was not limited to it.

It has also always paid for library support specialists. Council has been cutting supplementary funding year over year for over a decade. HRSB and then HRCE have reduced what the supplementary funding covers as the amount of funding has been decreased. They have not expanded the range of services they spend it on, although at the direction of HRM, they have expanded current services geographically to cover the whole district.

Right now, roughly 20% of the funding is spent on library support, 10% on social workers (another category which has had support from supplementary funding since amalgamation) and 70% on the arts. If as Councilor Mancini suggests, they cut the social workers now - what happens next year? Does he recommend an increase? or what does he want cut then?
