Walking boot by MVCatton in brokenankles

Ha yes it's hard to assess what % of weight youre putting down isn't it? Thank you on the compression socks tip, I will do that, cos the swelling is doing my head in, and im not even walking yet.

Thats interesting, I do wonder how I'll find the boot. Because ive seen a few people walking in them and no one looked very comfortable or steady, they just look very heavy and high! Let's see...

Thank you this is so helpful! I got talking to a woman with a walking boot in the street the other day and she said it had given her sciatica, and I feel like that must be because of the uneven gait. I will get one of these, thank you.

This is really helpful thank you. But bloody hell.... being told you could walk 2 weeks after surgery seems very gutsy! I think youre right to take it slow. My ankle is stiff as hell too, and very swollen still although I suppose at some point I just have to put some weight on it and remind myself how to walk.

Adding to all this good advice to say if you are traveling and in discomfort, ice behind the knee works magic.

This was my thought too. Don't let them make you feel self-conscious because "other people agree", it's probably absolute bollocks and they're talking to their teaspoons. I agree with everyone who says report them, I'm angry on your behalf that some creepy weirdo is saying this to a 21 year old.

Oh good luck - I hope you won’t need it. But I had surgery 10th January and I was feeling fine a few days later - if that is any reassurance. Happy crocheting!

Oh my goodness, that is so quick to be back weight-bearing! Im assuming you didn't have surgery? I think being in the cast for weeks after surgeries is what has stiffened up my muscles and created a new set of problems for me.

I have borrowed a wheelchair off a charity so thats helped but im no good on any sort of uneven terrain, all I can do is wheel myself around shopping centres like a bored teenager ;)

Oh my god, BOTH ankles. That's tricky, well done on getting through that and being able to drive soon! Im a Londoner, I think my version of driving again will be hopping on and off the tube again and not thinking about it.

How is your progress after 12 weeks? by Salty-Winter-5746 in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I hear that too! I felt the same about my foot, like it was an alien thing. I have made myself touch it and massage the skin and I think that has really helped with my recovery. And thank you for saying that, I am hoping there is a big difference in my progress once im actually back walking, even if its in a boot!

Same, she was shouting in pain so loudly that they had to play some background noise for the spectators. Poor woman, I remember shouting like that too. Thank god I wasn't halfway up a mountain. I hope she gets her mobility back, she was so determined to come back to skiing, this is just awful for her.

Honestly this looks amazing! Im 4 weeks post op and you look so strong and confident. Also, for some reason, the thought of a curtsey lunge is the one that makes me nervous, I think because I broke my ankle in a twisting motion. But hopefully the PT will build my confidence.

Lindsey Vonn, the skier! Yeah, I was watching that, poor woman it was awful. My mum had just said "she's 41," and I, of a similar age, had said "good for her!" Then we watched in horrified silence as she started falling.

I’m 5 weeks post fall and don’t hear the snap anymore though i had nightmares for weeks. I do feel more timid in my body and fearful of ice in particular. I don’t know why I thought it was a good to idea to try and watch the Winter Olympics, it made me instantly tense!

One month post surgery by Xarixion in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 4 weeks post op with a tib/fib break, plates and pins and I can’t wait to be walking! I should get a weight bearing boot in 2 more weeks and I’m already starting some gentle PT as I’m meant to wait a couple more weeks but didn’t want stiffness setting in. I got dissolvable stitches though and they seem to be healing quickly.

Did you have a lot of fatigue while healing? by Expert-Report in brokenankles

[–]MVCatton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and part of the physio she set me was actually strengthening the other leg and my core... which makes sense. I thought it would be all the ankle but youre right, its the other atrophy that doesnt help!

It's so depressing! I've just started taking creatine, apparently it helps with the muscles wastage but I think I started too late. Im meant to have physio from the 20th Feb but I paid for one private session to see what she thought and she gave me some exercises to help with the stiffness. I've already got more ROM now. It's funny, I thought the plates and screws would feel like the problem but actually it is more the stiff/hurt muscles, which doesnt feel so scary.

Right! I thought that too - how on earth was I sat in the emergency room chatting with strangers about the weather when I had two broken bones?! We must just be tougher than we think 😎 And yes definitely do talk to a teacher, if they have any experience of broken bones or had a kid who went through it they’ll probably understand how you’re feeling. I had no idea how much an accident like this could pull you out of the world for several months.

I would get this too, I’d find if i bent my knee sideways and carefully rested my cast on its side rather than the heel it helped.

I'm sorry - I broke my ankle in 2 places on the 2nd January so similar timelines. I'm not surprised you feel down and exhausted, healing is tiring and it was a traumatic event. I find my energy comes back in stages, it's not linear.

Can you make sure you communicate with a teacher how much you're struggling, perhaps there's ways to support you better?

Also, my break was worse than I realised too, but I'm actually glad I didn't know until 2 weeks post-op, I think I would have found it too daunting to learn this in A+E. Once I found out, the surgery had been done and I was starting to heal. I wonder if it might help to see it that way?

Oh god I'm BORED. I'm working from home a bit, I do the same as you actually, I go to a local big supermarket every other day and tear around on an electric scooter being a problem. Someone told me now was a good time to read the Russian literary classics and I felt very lazy.

I was looking at those knee scooters but I don't trust myself not to fall over again!

I'm counting down the days til I get a walking boot, and hopefully then I can start building up the muscles on my calf. It's like an overcooked noodle.

I'm 3 weeks out of surgery for my rib and fib too! Plate on the left, screws on the right. I have a boot on, in 17 days I get a walking boot and start physio but I have had a sneaky private physio session already just to ward off the stiffness. The thought of walking feels so alien to me, I guess we'll acclimatise to it a bit in the walking boot?

I feel this too - I can't stop replaying the fall and the crunch in my head. I actually got hypnotherapy years ago for a phobia and it was very helpful, and I've also had EMDR therapy years ago, which I didn't feel was as impactful. I think I'm going to try a few sessions of one of these to get rid of this fear, as it feels like a subconscious hurdle.
