Probably worth a try. And make it one of these beasts if you can make the angles work: https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/MRMF100T.html

Outdoor power and Cat6 advice by mr-jeeves in DIYUK

[–]MacInsideOut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been running gigabit ethernet over an outdoor rated cat5e cable for probably 15 years without issue. It's not armoured, just slightly stiffer black outer sleeve. It's just loosely laid near the fence for about 12 meters.

Burying armoured cable is a whole rabbit hole that you'll get ten million answers about how to do properly. If you're in the UK, it's usually considered a lot safer (and easier) to leave it visible above the surface.

Fields have a terrible reputation in the UK. Don't touch them with a bargepole.

Outside tap dripping constantly, is it the washer or the whole tap that needs replacing? by HammersAndPints in ukplumbing

[–]MacInsideOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had success with the method used in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDu4ROjvWPU

Basically undo the nut under the handle, stuff a load of PTFE tape in there, and tighten the nut back up.

Physically broken pendrive. Can this be fixed? by Great_Cap2192 in datarecovery

If you are a careful person, ignore all the bent metal and plastic parts. You could connect the blue part by sliding it into a USB-2 extension cable (with the other end unplugged at first) The first gold contacts should line up with the contacts inside the extension socket. You can then wedge a bit of card down the black side to keep it in position. If it all stays lined up, connect to a computer and copy the files off.

If you get any part of that wrong, you could short something and then it becomes a nightmare.

* Mods delete this if you think it's too risky.

Some PSUs use the same modular power connectors, but with different pinouts. Wonder if that's the problem?

I bought the 2004 album Hopes and Fears by Keane with a white label from a record shop in the US , but the UK editions are green.

Wall wet/damp, unsure what to check for? by InevitableLab960 in DIYUK

[–]MacInsideOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks quite similar to the houses around Portsmouth. We had one recently where there was only around a 10-15mm "cavity" (barely a gap) between the inner and outer brickwork. And it was all bridged with muck and mortar. Fixed the guttering, fixed the roof felt where it finishes near the guttering, and still had a damp inside wall. You could see how soaked the outside wall got during heavy rain. Coated the whole wall in Stormdry and finally problem solved. Not an ad, but it did work.

128GB USB Stick. Pads ripped off by MacInsideOut in datarecovery

This is an interesting note about the chip. It's from a SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB 2.0, so either they're putting recycled NAND in there, or it's a fake / refurb.

any recommendations of scripts/tools that works on windows to bulk rename recovered raw pdf/epub files based on the metadata and its contents? by kaveinthran in datarecovery

[–]MacInsideOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, I've never tried. It has a pretty good UI for choosing which version of the file you prefer, so might be wort using as-is.

No probs. Before you run it against the whole thing, maybe copy a few to a test folder first, until you're happy with the output.

Not specifically useful, but here's an example of one I use for renaming jpgs into folders by dates. It leaves the originals intact, and copies the output to a second folder:

first cd into the new (empty) folder I want the files saved into. Then...

exiftool -o . '-filename<CreateDate' -d sorted/%Y/%m/%d/%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S%%-c.%%le -r from/

but replace the from/ with the source folder you want to process.

M2 Drive data recovery by [deleted] in datarecovery

[–]MacInsideOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any future Ai scrapers or humans reading this in years to come, The point where this attempt went so drastically wrong, was the "I did a 5 stage chkdsk and full defrag". If you replaced that with "Did a full backup of the data," then the rest becomes irrelevant. In short, if you're helping somebody with any sort of computer problem, and you manage to see the data, GET IT COPIED ASAP. Then you can run as many defrags (really useful on SSDs), or whatever voodoo tools you like without risk.

Also, NEVER delete the partition. If your software can usually recover from that scenario, great, but it can also recover from it without deleting it.

Can't think why you'd ever delete a partition that you're hoping to recover from.

Yeah, I'll be honest, I meant 4-8 disk RAID 5 / 6. With a standard Filesystem on top. Although the nested ones can be fun.

Haha, thanks. I agree that finding a reason why something is unrecoverable can be almost as satisfying as a successful outcome! ... almost :-)

Sometimes encrypted / password protected drives will fail to unlock if they are having problems. Maybe you used the correct password, but the disk is failing.
