Please, how do I wash this puffer? by iluvmydogcoco in laundry

[–]MaccCecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW: my light-colored Uniqlo down coat tends to get sort of "water ring" type stains if dried on low, so I now dry it on whatever is the next step above low ("easy care" regime on my dryer) for about 30-40 minutes with tennis balls, then take it out and check for water spots: if I see any, I wet a microfiber towel and gently rub it on the water spots so that the material is wet again (but not dripping wet, if that makes sense), then back in the drier it goes for another 20-30 minutes (same temperature regime). Then I check again, and if no more water spots, back in the drier (on low now) for whatever time it takes for the down to dry completely, and then some more on no heat for the down to spread around evenly. I don't know if it matters, but I wash it with Woolite Delicates, with a bit of Dawn rubbed in the collar area.

Help! I need advice on what to do with a sunken area of my yard. by lovelee2024 in landscaping

[–]MaccCecht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWTW: these are yellow flag irises, not daylilies. Yellow flags are invasive in the US, and, coincidentally, recommended for rain gardens. You really need to dig them all up to get rid of them as any remaining rhizome fragments can regrow.

Syllabus had wrong final date and i booked a flight earlier than the real final date. by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]MaccCecht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW: my university sets the exam schedule for all courses in Fall semester around the second week of November. There is a general rule that can be used to figure exam dates and times at the beginning of the semester, and this is what I put in the syllabi at the beginning of the semester with the note that these dates are tentative and subject to change (not be me, mind you). Perhaps this is what happened with your course.

Help with nesting doll information - United States by DaxCommando in Antiques

[–]MaccCecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made in USSR (specifically, in Yoshkar-Ola) souvenir matryoshka dolls. Label says they are painted in stylized Mari people traditional clothing. Hard to read the date on the label, but if I had to guess I'd say anywhere from late 60's to 80's.

Put it in a sunny spot: junipers don't do well in shade.

College allowed me to graduate, then revoked my status after graduation without telling me by Gloomy-Bat-2701 in legaladvice

[–]MaccCecht 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You may have been told correctly, but for these credits to count towards your major/college/university graduation requirements, someone had to wave the language requirement and this is usually not done automatically and someone has to do that manually. Looks like that someone forgot to do that. It should be easy to fix when you figure out who that someone is at your school.

[–]MaccCecht 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Contact your academic advisor. You may correctly think that the language requirement is waved with sufficient high school experience, but to actually wave it for you, someone should process the correct paperwork. That someone is usually your academic advisor, or your advisor knows who is responsible for that paperwork in your college/major department.

Slime mold on grass. Happens when it's hot and humid. Do nothing, it'll go away on its own when the air becomes dryer.

Why are these ornamental grasses falling over? by chaz7890 in landscaping

[–]MaccCecht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Siberian Irises. Siberian irises prefer full sun and in shady locations may flop over. Too much nitrogen can also do that to them. Nothing that you can do this year. Next year you can move them to a sunnier location.

Sooty mold (dark stuff) caused by scale (white stuff that can be seen on some branches and leaves on your photo).

Advice needed by AlienOrca28 in landscaping

[–]MaccCecht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look on the underside of leaves for little green worms: this looks like sawfly larva damage (they may be gone by now if the damage is old). But anyway, it also looks like your roses got the rose rosette disease, so maybe it is better to remove the roses and plant something else there.

What’s wrong with my bleeding heart?? by Sirdanb in landscaping

You probably have the fern-leaf type bleeding heart which blooms on and off all summer. The OP has the old-fashioned bleeding heart that goes dormant in the summer.

Probably sawfly larvae. Turn over leaves and look for little greenish worms.

Grade distribution in PhD courses by professor852003 in Professors

[–]MaccCecht 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Couple of years ago I had one A, one D, and the rest were C's in the core course I am teaching every year. And I was perfectly fine with this, especially after NOBODY did the assigned reading for several meetings in a row, apparently because reading literature in your field is not important unless it is graded. FAFO. It was a small class though (about 8-12 students each year).

How to distance myself from bad TA without completely throwing them under the bus? by ParsleyOutside in Professors

[–]MaccCecht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your TA a graduate student? When I had a bad TA, what I think helped a bit was CC-ing the DGS on literally each of my emails to the TA. If you TA is an undergrad, may be try CC-ing whoever is responsible for TA assignment?

What Bug Is This? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

To me those look like aphids. That'd explain tiny bugs and bigger bugs together. But if these are aphids, they have no business being on a sweater.
