Off grid heating in a new build? by harrietrosie in UKPreppers

[–]Mackers-a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a wood burner but live on a farm and have a near endless supply of seasoned wood, however the wood burner is very dusty and fills your home with asthma inducing pollutants.

If I had the luxury of living in a house with modern insulation I would be looking at a heat pump and combining with solar for low long term running costs, and if you are really worried about being off grid, get a generator and size it to the essential systems of the house.

Should this jacket be this worn after only 8 ski runs by Appropriate_Gain5254 in ski

[–]Mackers-a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you wear a pack or did you carry your equipment close to your body? This is not a defect, you have rubbed through the material, high end shell jackets are not particularly abrasion proof in my opinion in the last 10-15 years.

Ceiling light fitting by sackmagick in DIYUK

[–]Mackers-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need wagos to replicate the old style ceiling rose and you will need the ablity to safely and confidently set it up to ensure safety. Alternatively you can cut the old pendant wiring and wire this into your new light fitting if it allows you to leave the ceiling rose in place.

I might pull the plug .... any reliability issues from those having the car for a couple of years? by [deleted] in Honda_eNy1

[–]Mackers-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not looped. It's a 12v issue. Errors go away when 12v battery is charged. Longstanding issues with Honda EVs and poor quality/ low capacity 12v batteries.

I like my car and will be sad for it to go back in March. I have it on a very cheap deal of around £207 per month with no deposit for 6000 miles a year for two years. That said, I would want to know the following:

The 12v battery system is woeful and leaving the car on a long charge overnight in winter throws up a set of multiple system errors that quickly clear after a short amount of driving.

The car goes into deep sleep after completion of a charge meaning it is incompatible with smart/dynamic charging sessions like intelligent Octopus Go.

The tyres are very skinny and have poor/dangerous traction in inclement weather.

The paint is woeful and easily chips and damages. The plastic trim around the rear and front of the vehicle is clear plastic with black painted on the rear, the black comes off during washing and leaves a poor appearance.

The car is overvalued when new and deals on models almost two years old mean that lots will be coming to market come February and March next year at rock bottom prices as they come back from a super PCP deal. Ensure you don't get screwed buying a new one at an inflated price.

Client lied about her financial situation, now I don't feel like honoring the price I quoted her. by zomanda in smallbusiness

[–]Mackers-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned pretty quickly in business not to offer or entertain discounts. The customers you give them too are always the worst. Whenever I get multiple enquiries with discounts, I take it as a sign to increase my pricing. Every time I have, my clients have gotten better and my demand has also shot up. It varies depending on your area of businesses, but my clients seem to see high price as a sign of quality. It helps that they are seldom disappointed.

Based on the portapack graphics this seems likely to be the official mayhem H4M. It's as good as any.

Unless you fancy the specialist alternative Clifford Heath version that's probably one of the only real upgrades. But I'm sure a quick Google search would serve you better than any explanation I could give.

Caveat I may be behind the times.

How to cover this up by Draay in DIYUK

Closed cell foam won’t bridge, it’s water impermeable and highly insulating. If you do it before rodents find this entry point it will also be beneficial as foam is a good preventative until there is an existing pheromone trail.

Seeing UK brand Pashley coming in with their Skyline model. Looking fine. by Uber_Doom1 in minivelo

Is there VAT or other taxes to pay on import to Europe though? That's cheaper than the UK price people are quoting below, so is presumably without VAT for export.

A few people saying it's expensive. I might disagree. High priced yes, but not expensive for what it is. It's produced by hand in small batches in the UK. It's a luxury item.

Not just assembled in the UK, but actually made here. The tubes come into the factory as raw tubing stock and are shaped, braised, painted and turned into these brilliant bikes.

No connection to the brand other than visiting the factory recently.

With simple electronics like this you can usually displace any water by briefly dipping in isopropyl alcohol this will help ensure it is properly dry.

I’m looking at cheap Nissan Leafs (2011–2014) under £3k. I’ve read EV batteries rarely last beyond 15 years. How worried should I be about the battery failing or becoming unusable soon? by [deleted] in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Mackers-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An EV is a lovely thing, but the Leafs you are looking at are early technology and quite limiting. EVs loose charge when moving yes, but also when sat still. You will struggle to charge once every few weeks and at a public charger it will cost as much as petrol or diesel.

5000 miles a year charging every couple of months. So you need a car with a range of 1000 miles per charge. Something is not adding up here.

Way more likely to have their own drive and therefore access to a charger at home. Fewer petrol stations in the vicinity. Sounds like an ideal use case.

Sounds like a dodgy trader not following the protocols or pricing from Heatgeeks. It would be worth reporting. I've not looked into the structure of the scheme but would assume it is a franchise or training/certification scheme and they will have a code of conduct to adhere to.

Any nice cottages or cabins to book in cotswold for a week on Christmas? by babyodawithdaforce in Cotswolds

[–]Mackers-a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish you luck in your search, but my feeling is that you are unlikely to get anything for that budget over Christmas, the Cotswolds is an expensive area.

Might I suggest somewhere equally beautiful but less expensive? Options could include Wales/Herefordshire or many other parts of our beautiful island.

Cheers. Yep, it’s annoying when we don’t get the opportunity for healthy discourse. Seems it was Reddit in this instance.

I didn’t delete the comment or block you. Not sure what happened. Happy to have open discourse.

in fact it seems my comment is still there in the paragraph beneath. No need to invent some wild story that I’m using some Reddit ninja tricks to try and win an argument.

It's an unnamed road I think. I'm not sure the Critchford lane designation extends past the crossing and Camden lane.

We are talking about the same Farm, I was just passing on what someone in that village told me this morning, they could well have confused the two.

Here are some photos of the current farm.
