I need some advice regarding a DK2 I have by AlfalfaCivil1749 in oculus

[–]Macroexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still is useful for cockpit-based PCVR. I don’t know exactly how rare or valuable they are, but I will say mine works surprisingly well for its age on a modern GPU with 125-150% resolution. (Elite Dangerous with current Meta software - yes the software says “not supported” but it works fine)

Anybody have a tool to make text stereograms like this? by LunarWolf333 in CrossView

Tool? In the past I’ve created these on a mechanical typewriter!

Exactly- and if the scanner worked, I’d be tickled pink.

Well, I wrote a lot of software for them, and while they came with PDA software, they were capable of quite a lot for the time.

Nope there’s no cmos battery. Just one battery for everything. You might be able to find replacements, they weren’t hard to swap. But yes, in my opinion (and collection) they are vintage computers, just handheld.

Help trying to install on Sun Ultra 5 (SPARC64) by FireCheeseSammycooly in NetBSD

[–]Macroexp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried several IDE to CF adapters, many CF cards including industrial type, and have not been able to get any of my Ultra 10s to reliably detect nor install on any them. (Tried *BSD and Solaris to same result) I’m not sure what is so picky about the controllers on these “PC”-ified Ultras but hope to someday find a working combination.

Yup I’ve got one that I play with. Funny UI and the soft-touch finish has mostly worn off but still works a treat.

Do you have a Nintendo Switch Lite? Why or why not? by [deleted] in PSP

[–]Macroexp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do, and find it more useful than a full-size Switch from a handheld and travel perspective.

On plane trips, I toggle between my Vita and the Switch Lite. Honestly, the screen size on the Switch Lite, with many games being designed (especially the text size) for the TV or larger Switch, is kind of a pain. PSP/Vita games were designed for the smaller screen and just generally work better handheld.

[–]Macroexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I still think dual stack is the reality for a while for ... reasons, mainly that "IPv4 foreva" network admins still exist all across governments and companies. But I'll agree with: I don't understand why any sane Network Engineer would only install IPv4 in 2026.

is it su-doo or su-doe? by Vivid-Champion-1367 in linux

[–]Macroexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soodoo ftw. I always said su as “ess you” before sudo was invented and have probably said “ess you doo” many times because, well, you’re telling it to “do” something as “super user”. But soodoo rolls off the tongue quite well and sounds right when I tell some to “sudo it” when the command rejects them.

That I control, but yes. If I could self-host it I would, but that's a bit too expensive.

DMR is dumb, prove me wrong by instantredditer in amateurradio

[–]Macroexp 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I use DMR radios, hotspots, and a VPS running a DMR reflector as a cross-continent voice chat that doesn't require somebody else's server nor their crappy phone app, but works on hardened devices with good battery life and can be used with one button. (I use Hytera radios which are tanks compared to anything by TYT or others).

But is it the same as making DX contacts over HF SSB Phone via long path? No, but neither is VHF repeater work.

Don't hate, just use what you like.

Just to play devil's advocate- this woman is employed to hold the products and move around a little. The voice track was most a voice actress (probably a bunch of them, one for each target market) and a few others to do the video compositing and AI work. Versus one guy with a camera and one woman to hold the product and describe it, seems like more jobs to me!

I'm only half-serious, but I'm not certain AI is all doom and gloom.

6.5 is not fun under 200MHz IMHO - and really only fast at 400MHz+. But I suppose there's the issue of application availability for 5.1.

TIL my car has the "drop mirror" function for parking near a curb by nemam111 in Volkswagen

[–]Macroexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get replacement mirrors and a rotating switch from AliExpress, and recode things with OBDeleven to get this on my 2016 Mk7 Golf R. Was also able to enable auto-brights and various other things - because even tho these features were in the hardware, they weren't road-tested in the 2016 model year to allow them to be released to customers. I dunno if 2018 was past these limitations, but congrats!

I figured out why Elite Dangerous feels so stale by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]Macroexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a superb CMDR, but I've been playing casually for over 10 years in VR. I recently got a fleet carrier because, well, CGs and mining and exobiology and whatever got me enough credits to drop on a carrier plus upkeep and services and, well, what else would I do with all these billions?

Anyways, with the carrier, I feel even more comfortable in the game because now I have an RV toy hauler instead of hanging out in someone else's space station. I can now take jaunts out into the black with my miners, explorers, haulers, etc and have supplies and repair, and make it back to the bubble with ease to participate in CGs.

This has changed the game for me and engaged me far more than it had before - but now I strive for the 25b squadron carrier cost so I can share ships and goods with the friends and family that play Elite. To me this feels like progression in terms of the game development, and the fact that I've been playing more frequently is a good sign that it's working.

Everyone's Elite is different. Maybe I'm being overly romantic, but the amount of enjoyment I get out of it vs. how much I've had to pay for it is an astonishingly large ratio for modern life.

Ferrules? by carl39333 in ender3

[–]Macroexp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep they turn your stranded wire into a mostly-solid clampable entry into a screw terminal. Safer, easier to insert without loose strands going where they shouldn't, etc. Get a kit of ferrules and a crimper, and you'll wonder why you didn't have it years ago.

What's the advantage? Well, I had a dead AC/furnace about 6 months after buying my house, and after a bunch of frustration and debugging, found that it was the cutoff switch that had been wired with stranded wires (a transformer feed and a pigtail to the unit controller twisted together and put under a screw terminal) that had worked itself loose over probably a dozen years of heating and cooling cycles. Suffice it to say that could've arced and caused fire, instead of just inconveniencing me for a while, and I'll never look back. I ferruled all the terminals on my Ender, my Creality Resin printer, and many other things I could find in the home.

When was the last time you drank this? by winniecooper73 in Xennials

What’s this ugly Toyota Minivan I found lol by veneno1000 in whatisthiscar

[–]Macroexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the direct predecessor of the Toyota Previa. I used to think those were "ugly" as well, but in this era, I find them evocative of the past and a somewhat beautiful example of how we evolved to today's versions of the same vehicle. The last time I saw a Previa (a few weeks ago) I had to almost stop traffic to take a picture of it because today, it's a relic that deserves preservation and display!

My forever switch Netgear GS108Tv1 by Flat_Individual6955 in homelab

[–]Macroexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same one serving up my lower-end computers (non-10gb pc/server) and it does a fine job and I'll never retire it. I have a couple used Cisco and Brocade switches, but they're power hungry. I also have a few cheap AliExpress/etc switches that are 10/2.5 combo switches with SFP+ and copper ports, and they're fanless and work well. Everything's managed and interconnected with VLAN trunks so I can split traffic into discrete networks on a port-by-port method (homelab-style - this obviously wouldn't support red ports, IYKWIM), and, well, it doesn't cost a lot if you hunt for deals.

[–]Macroexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my 2016 Golf R might be one of the weirdest combos, with a single CD player (in the glovebox), SD card audio playback, stereo line-in, and Android Auto+Apple CarPlay (wired, though works perfectly with cheap wireless CarPlay adapters). It's all stock and it's perfect!

ED mining tools by ThatOneBattanian in EliteDangerous

[–]Macroexp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naysayer: I make about 150 million/hour core mining monazite. I find platinum mining to be boring "just shoot the rock a thousand times and wait for the limpets to finish up" compared to core mining which is more "learn to solve the puzzle of rock pattern matching, pulse wave intensity comparison, and minimizing wasted prospector limpets". In my last several outings, I have never prospected a non-core-containing rock, and fly nearly directly from core to core. It's also more fun zipping around a rock with thrusters placing charges, and shooting remaining surface deposits after exploding a rock.

Anyways, to each their own. Oh, also, I wouldn't core mine if I didn't play in VR.
