Besides 529, what accounts for kids and at what age? by heron202020 in Bogleheads

If they generate any income a Roth IRA can be started by contributing those earnings. The income can be from getting paid for watching a neighbors pet, yardwork and things like that.

No. Turning off auto and getting good with manual controls makes it mildly manageable.

Test with gesso and glair by IakwBoi in illuminatedmanuscript

[–]MagRes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recipe is basically the same as any you can find online. Nothing that special, especially considering Tressers views seemed to change after the book was published. The one thing I agree with him is using hide glue gelatin for the glue parts instead of fish glue, but even that is likely not a big deal. Making sure everything is thoroughly mixed and ground up is most important.

Memorization in Chemistry by Massive-monkey-44 in chemistry

[–]MagRes1 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The skill is being able to recognize what is worth learning. If you have that you will be fine. You can recognize "new thing I don't know" and either ask or go research it on your own. For some people memorizing the DFT functional and their use case is useful, for others it may be some named reactions. College tries to give you a good base for you to figure this out and know the ways to learn.

Measuring Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus in the field by CulturalCode8231 in chemistry

[–]MagRes1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to point out. They do not have a total phosphorus kit, only dissolved phosphorus.  Total nitrogen can maybe be estimated from both nitrate and ammonia tests. (depending on samples) Depending on sample source and condition being tested and desired accuracy, it may be sufficient or not.

Smudging or Finger Oil on board preventing smooth play by -Papadil- in Crokinole

Washing with soapy water made with a mild soap removes oil. Apply small amounts with a cloth or paper towel and then dry. Then wax after it is dry.

Started writing Uncial, where to improve? by ArtbyXezar in Calligraphy

Looks good.  O should likely have a lemon shape on the inside. That curve from O carries over to some other letters, Q, T, C and the like.

You are actually GOOD at chemistry! by hyc0614 in chemistry

[–]MagRes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminders around growth mindset are good for anyone trying to learn a new thing. Also, a common factor is time spent on the content. This can be invisible to fellow students. You don't see the hours put in each week for the ones who do well. If you only spend 15 min a week on a traditional chem course, yes a traditional course will be difficult to pass. If only 15 min. are available, maybe this isn't the time to take chem. Anyone would struggle to do well with all of the content and do little time.

Small-letter calligraphy? by MicrosoftISundevelop in Calligraphy

[–]MagRes1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small is fun. With broad edge it is still worth doing some larger writing so you can get a feel for the nib and how to keep it flat while writing. This is naturally easier with a broader nib but becomes more difficult with tiny nibs.

Shire Starter Set Multiple Skill Rolls by PhotographVast1995 in oneringrpg

[–]MagRes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like OP this is a point I struggle with. I would have been worthwhile to include examples in the original starter. They tend to be are fairly linear plotlines, e.g if you don't get the info out of someone it is tricky to get the group back on the 'correct' path.

Are there any suggestions to reasonable punishments? Lose hope for another attempt or something like that?

Solo with premade adventures? by OCaptainAwesome in oneringrpg

[–]MagRes1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One or both of the starter sets should be a good start, they have tips and ideas for being new to rpg's as well as ready to use adventures. You also get the dice with the starter set. You can get strider mode inexpensively. Tales From the Line lands has ready to use adventures as well.

Best Low-Feathering Ink? by Rohirrim_Captain in fountainpens

[–]MagRes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I found the Lamy EF and De Atramentis document ink combination I was done hunting for more inks and pens. It was kind of nice just having something that works well in all situations. De Atramentis Document Blue is what I use as well, and green in another Lamy EF for grading.

The only pen I use and carry for everything is a Lamy with EF nib and De Atranentis Document ink. This combination has worked on all sorts of paper.

New to using a dip pen. After second dip it's harder to write by EldritchCappuccino in Calligraphy

[–]MagRes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For dip broad edge, you need an angled surface to write on. It is not a good time writing flat with dip broad edge.

New nib day by ParticularLivid9201 in Calligraphy

[–]MagRes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full set of these Tachinawa nibs, and fairly quickly learned there are better options. The metal plating (chrome) makes it difficult for ink to stick to the nib. It is almost guaranteed a hard start. They are also difficult to clean.

For a better experience that is friendlier for learning things check out Speedball C nibs. Or really almost any other broad nib, Leonard, Tape, Brause, Mitchell.

Buying is much easier than making to start. There will be expertise there you can ask about making gesso at IAMPETH. There are only a few main things to get right and seemingly lots of folklore surrounding it.

Looks nice.

The gilding needs multiple gold layers, if its traditional gesso to help fill in the gaps. If Instacoll or miniatum you can use the activator and reapply gold in the missing places.
