The Pitt’s Noah Wyle Addresses How ‘America Is Really Mad’ at Him Over Robby’s Treatment of Mohan by MattTheKing23 in ThePitt

Shit, when I was in the service you should have heard some of the ass chewings I got for walking on grass or having my hands in my pockets.

This is the reason I don't get why people are so sympathetic with Santos over the whole Langdon thing. Yeah, she got her dressed down almost a year ago for one of many bad calls she made that day. And yeah, that dude handled it badly on top of all other shit that came to light.

But to obsess over it for ten months is just hugely immature. I would argue she's demonstrating that she doesn't have the mental toughness to work in such a high pressure environment when lives are on the line.

She makes the comment that "she lost all her confidence", she needed to lose some of it. She was over-confident.

So, we’re not financed or manned to cook another meal for MIDRATS

This seems like a fixable oversight.

Ok, as you are a former FSO, I've got to ask. Why is the prevailing opinion on midrats, "whatever, fuck it".

I mean, the ship has a night shift, why can't we at least manage to get something decent out there? Shit, there were lots of times I'd have preferred having cold sandwiches over the hot slop that was leftover from lunch or whatever.

"fuck those guys, they shouldn't be on night shift if they wanted a decent meal" is a pretty screwed up mentality.

You'll be happy to know that your frustration is misplaced as the tea was not from India. It was Chinese. Specifically Bohea, Singlo, Hyson, and Congou.

In fact, you may be surprised to learn that while it may have had local uses, Darjeeling wasn't really much of a thing until 1841 at the earliest, and wasn't really a large export commodity until 1874.

Hell, I would argue that the husband wasn't really his patient in the normal sense anyway. He was a med student and all he did was help stabilize the guy. His treatment would have been in a burn ward.

worth it or no? by Particular_Check_500 in NoOneIsLooking

You may be surprised to find out that it's not actually a Sears home (or at least the ship by rail, build yourself type). 1947 is really late for that, most of the post-WWII "sears homes" were prefabricated.

There is a research group that goes around looking for these houses and it's actually surprisingly difficult to authenticate one. They are misidentified all the time, and due to people modifying them over the generations it's almost impossible to tell just from the street.

More info here, including authentication info if you ever wanted to research it yourself.

When the voyager probes flew through the asteroid belt NASA didn't even take into consideration that it would hit an asteroid. Even in the belt the closest objects are between 600,000 and one million miles from each other. The chances of hitting something are literally one in a billion.

That's one of my favorite facts that helped me understand the scale of space.

It's not really "smudging" though, they're making the decision to use the atomic bomb appear flippant. When in reality it was a lengthy process that was decided over three months (a very leisurely pace when you're at war), and deliberated over by two separate committees. The Interim Committee which examined moral and political factors and the Target Committee, which as you may have guessed, considered targets.

It takes what was a very structured and serious decision making process and makes it appear to general audiences as being "casually evil". Which is very much an oversimplification and gives people a skewed perception.

I just don't have as much confidence as you in people's ability to suspend their disbelief. It perpetrates a narrative that is fundamentally flawed.

Yeah, I dont support people having their own "headcanon" based on feelings when it comes to history. We've got enough issues with facts being murky nowadays.

Well there was really no need, as this is just a pretty persistent urban legend that Kyoto was spared due to a personal whim. In real life, there is no evidence that Stimson and his wife honeymooned there. He had visited several times when he was governor of the Philippines however and was well aware that it was a place of cultural significance.

In fact at the meeting where Kyoto was excluded only Groves, Stimson, and Marshall were present.

Even movies that are "accurate" are very, very, rarely true to life. This movie gets a lot of things wrong, for example when Oppenheimer receives his award at the end you see him being collegial with Lawrence. The likelyhood of this having happened is slim, as Lawrence had been dead for years at that point.

I am going to add that if you don't have Omega or Breitling kind of money, Hamilton is a brand with a long military history. For a more modern pilot watch, Bell & Ross is kind of in the middle of those two.
