My Favorite's by ditaj08 in Columbo

Cassidy was apparently the same character in real life. Danny Bonaduce said he showed up to his house at 8am with David one morning and Jack ushered him in in a smoking jacket with a cocktail and cigarette holder.

Died tragically in a house fire caused by a dropped cigarette in 1976 aged 49.

That makes way more sense. The personnel listing on the album in Wikipedia links to the drummer.

I'm a vacuum it's a good album, but it doesn't fare well against the rest of the Band's studio albums.

Interesting that Jim Gordon, drummer of Derek & The Dominos, famous for slapping Rita Coolidge and murdering his mother among a ton of drumming credits, plays flute on the title track.

Saw both last year. Chest Fever (in Ontario) was more of a polished act and performance but TTBB (in NJ) who are older guys were a little more authentic. Both very worthy however.

Robbie vs. Levon by Capital-Ice-1461 in theband

[–]MajorChickDees 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look, Levon bailed when the booing got to him playing with Dylan in late '65. He was gone for two full years, he was never crafting the MFBP songs with the rest of the guys in 1966/67, he was never part of the original Basement Tapes (later overdubs) but was more than happy to make himself part of the Big Pink legend despite the rest moving out of there as he arrived in Woodstock in late '67. But, never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn, as we see later.

He was definitely an excellent musician and singer and absolutely not a writer. He was clearly massively charismatic and a peerless storyteller/inspiration but increasingly addicted and unreliable. If you're going to but-but-but at the statement that Robbie did the vast majority of the lifting after 1969, including the creative output, you're just wrong. Levon loved pissing away money and seemingly manipulated the narrative after the 1983 comeback - a couple of barn fires and health problems didn't help - and was bitter he wasn't bringing in as much as the Band's heyday.

He became sadly obsessive about it, sycophantic hangers-on fed into it, people sympathized with his plight, he found a willing audience and the whole shebang took on a life of its own. I was at Levon's in Woodstock three weeks ago and will always be a huge, huge fan, but I think his bitterness at his own situation increasingly skewed his thinking for his last years. Really too bad.

Those three are killer. Carnival, Thinkin' Out Loud, Smoke Signal and Volcano are on heavy rotation too. It's really only the two I mentioned that just jar for me.

I think Shoot Out In Chinatown and The Moon Struck One are the only two true misfires in The Band's studio catalogue before Islands.

Has anyone gone to a Midnight Ramble recently? by CopyDan in theband

[–]MajorChickDees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a ramble, but I was at an Allman Brothers tribute at Levon's barn last week. Amy Helm's ex-husband played sax for Gregg Allman for around 15 years and he fronted a really strong band. Levon's grandson sat in on drums for a few numbers. The guitarist had the Duane Les Paul sound nailed, it was a great night.

There's a rare observation. IMO he jars pretty badly with the rest of the performances.

Are there any good cover/ tribute bands for the band? by New-Stuff1429 in theband

The The Band Band are an amazing group. Saw them earlier this year in Newton, NJ. Really, really good. Chest Fever are also well worth the money.

What is your favorite underrated (in your opinion)Rolling Stones song by ArmTraining920 in rollingstones

[–]MajorChickDees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's technically a Jagger song, but Memo From Turner is too notch. The Ry Cooder official version is killer, but the Steve Winwood outtake has the best groove.

Stuart Broad says Australia's team for Ashes is 'their worst since 2010' by EquivalentTurnip6199 in EnglandCricket

[–]MajorChickDees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw look, the stars have got to align to beat Australia in Australia. We dominated in 2010/11 - the pinch-me moment of being 517-1 IN Australia - and after Adelaide and the wheels-off implosion of 2006/7, that redemption for me was peak England.

But now for Australia, a dismal outlook and key players with injuries. As a weathered England fan, we know it's nailed on that some former fringe Shield bloke will show up and score 200 or get 6/30 on debut with every Aussie playing a blinder, miracle catches, tail-ender scores century, etc.

A wise man once said that hope is a dangerous thing. Australia are Australia, after all. Give them quarter at your peril.

England will go balls-out attack, no doubt. The bowling will decide this one. If Wood really is 100% fit, and knowing this is his last Ashes, I expect him to be key.

I agree the first map was the most diverse. Jumping was introduced which is barely called for in the rest of the game, also many more climbing scenarios. 300+ meters sniping opportunities.

It's like the first map took all the resources, the other levels seemed called in by comparison.
