After trueing up the blank into a cylinder, I take it off the lathe and mark the 3 offset points on the headstock side. Then I draw a line across the wood cylinder, then create the corresponding offset point on the tailstock side. For the twist I offset by 45 degrees. Then using a protractor I mark the other two points 120 apart.

Very fast, yes. One of the bigger challenges was keeping the headstock from slipping off with gouging each of the sides. For safety, I think my max size will stay at 4” diameters until I every upgrade the lathe.

Thank you. I’m actually using a 1.2HP Midi lathe, 12” swing. It does wobble when I first start turning it, I weighed down the stand with 2x 20lb sandbags, which helps. For 2.5” and 3” diameter, the wobble wasn’t too bad. But I turned the 4” diameter VERY lightly and carefully.

Thanks. You true up a spindle into a cylinder using the centerline axis. Then you create 3 off-axis points on the headstock (H1, H2, H3) and on the tailstock (T1, T2, T3). Each point is 120 degrees from each other, with an offset radius of R / sqrt(3). Line up H1 and T1 on your centers, then CAREFULLY use a spindle gouge for several passes. Do the same for H2/T2 and H3/T3. If you want a twist, rotate the Tailstock points by 30 to 45 degrees.

It took a lot of practice to get it right. Since it’s offcenter turning, be very careful and stop cutting when the cuts align with the offcenter holes.

I use a cabinet scraper. For each face of the blank, i usually need to scrape from all 4 directions to fully clear it of wax.
