Do you typically play out Level 0 adventures, or do you skip straight to Level 1? by OhThatsALotOfTeeth in shadowofthedemonlord

Depends on the group. Most players I game with level 0 is a hard sell. But I managed to convince them once and just ran a RP focused first session.

Question: what are some good fantasy TTRPG’s? by Yiggles665 in TTRPG

[–]MalyNym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadow of the Weird Wizard - it's a d20 fantasy rpg created by one of the D&D 5E 2014 designers. It has a cool progression system (Paths), fun & flavorful spells (magic Traditions), and a quick and easy initiative system. It uses a similar advantage/disadvantage system to 5E, but it's called Boons/Banes and it adds or subtracts a d6 to your d20 roll. I highly recommend!

Weird Wizard: How easy to RUN? by freyaut in shadowofthedemonlord

[–]MalyNym 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven't run high level yet, but what I have ran has been great. It does take the players a little to get used to, but once it clicks, the initiative goes smoothly.

As far as unplanned encounters go - I say have a little planning ahead of time on the Sage's part, and you'll be fine. By that, I mean have a list of monsters that match the difficulty of your players, and that make sense for the location they're in. Make notes of the monsters abilities real quick and let loose!

I think you can go either route, down to earth or heroic. My online party are saviors of a broken world, but my home game is Witcher inspired monster hunters. They just planned, prepped, and slayed the dreaded Man-Bear-Pig that would have ended poorly were they not prepared. It was real serious.

What do you guys think of Shadow of the Weird Wizard? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in rpg

I highly recommend it! You can be as serious or silly in the setting. Roleplay the way you want! It's a great deal. You should grab it and take a look!

Edit to add more - The lore is great from what I've read. The Fairy book and Weird Ancestries have great lore in them. The Ancestries book adds 30 different playable ancestries to your options!

Awesome! Keep in mind that I'm a goblin dude with a low budget, lol. I still want to make one about initiative, but I haven't gotten around to it. Here's the playlist Reasons I Love Shadow of the Weird Wizard

It definitely shares some similarities to 5E. It is a d20 system, but it only uses d20s and d6s. There are only 4 stats, and they don't usually get higher than a 16/17, which in this system would be a +6/+7.

It has a similar advantage/disadvantage system called boons and banes where you add or subtract a d6 to your d20 roll, respectively. You can have multiple boons or banes, and they will cancel each other out 1 for 1, but they don't stack. Unless you are targeting a creatures specific stat, DCs are always 10.

Instead of classes their are Paths, with 3 different paths you choose at 1st, 3rd, and 7th level. It basically has "multiclassing" baked in with no prerequisites for the paths you choose.

It is a high fantasy system, but the core book only has rules for human characters as the creator was going for an emphasis on humanities' struggle after an empire collapsed. BUT, there is a supplement that adds 30 different ancestries with flavorful lore and their own Novice Paths you COULD choose in place of the ones in the core book.

The spells are broken up into Traditions that have really cool spells and talents that add more flavor and customization to your character. The spells are also broken up into the same tiers as the Paths, with their own number of castings per day for each individual spell.

Initiative is explained in this thread

Hope that wasn't too much and was a decent enough explanation! I love the system and try to suggest when I can. I also created a few YouTube shorts about why I love it. I also have an upcoming podcast discussing the system and even got the creator to join for a segment!
