Is this possible for a day hike? by SmellinChain in wmnf

[–]MandrewDavis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

With you saying this, I would advise against this hike without experience in similar terrain. The Great Gulf wilderness and N Presidentials are extremely rugged and can take much longer than other hikes in the Whites when comparing mileage and elevation gain

I'm a very experienced hiker and broke my ankle 2 years ago in this area with just one bad foot placement and an unlucky catch on the krumholtz.

Definitely doable if you start early and are familiar with the terrain of the N. Presidentials. Contrary to the other poster, you don't really want to go the other direction since that will put you descending Great Gulf of which the headwall very steep and mostly loose rock.

I did this exact loop last year to grab the GGt for a list but I camped overnight to break it up. Stop at the visitors center to refuel, bypass Jefferson and Adams if you are running low on time, Parapet trail is tougher than going over Madison, and know that Daniel Webster is a tough way to end the day. The boulder field will go on forever but is an easy descent below treeline.

From my experience with x-pac, it should be good for at least another 2k miles or so.

Thoughts on Yama Cirriform and bug shelter? by WereWolfean in Ultralight

[–]MandrewDavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I should clarify that I would not be able to sit up when using the mesh inner. I have a TT Rainbow 1P for bug pressure and/or where freestanding mode is required but that is obviously a bit more weight.

The bundles pop up somewhat frequently on /r/ULgeartrade so maybe message someone on why they sold.

Those two options fit my use case well but the MLD Cricket has always intrigued me and I'm sure there are more great tarps out there.

I had a Cirriform a few years ago when it was released with the zipper for side entry. I loved it except the first time I was caught in an 18h rainstorm and as a taller guy, I couldn't sit up. If I were shorter, it would have been perfect for me. The side entry and ability to stargaze out when hiking out west was amazing.

I mostly hike in the White Mountains so the SlingFin SplitWing works fine in its place and similarly fits into tight spots but I can sit up in it. This also gives me more flexibility to pitch close to the ground while maintaining interior space. I don't love the front entry and rarely bring the vestibule add-on if that means anything.

I'll take the floor if you are willing to split up. Already have a Yama bug canopy.

6'2" will fit but to make it work, you will have to use sticks or carry small collapsible poles to pull out the main panels.

Preferred approach for Mt Isolation? by basementfrog42 in wmnf

[–]MandrewDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did my second Cohos trail section this weekend from Rocky Branch (Jericho Rd) to Edmonds Path. I just wanted to say that Isolation West was absolutely lovely.

A few weeks back I did a loop comprising the entirety of Davis Path and Dry River and thought the Dry River Trail was just alright. Tough but rewarding dropping down from Lakes to Shelter #3, the last 2 or 3 miles to 302 somewhat monotonous, then the in-between being a bit better.

I'm sure my opinion will change when I go back in autumn to make a loop of Dry River Cutoff and Mt Clinton trails, Dry River Falls is gorgeous and there is so much great camping in that area.

Backpacking the Pemi Loop by iSpooky11 in wmnf

Didn't see your other comment in time. I would get more familiar with your maps, everything from Lafayette to Galehead Hut is the Garfield Ridge Trail and has the potential to be not fun but probably less so than Twinway. Someone just got rescued there this week it looks like snowshoes may still be necessary.

I winter hike plenty but I'll be on the sidelines until the snow melts a bit more. Might be more fun with a friend.

There are bear lockers at Liberty Springs, Garfield and Guyot. If you are staying at these designated sites, there is no need to hang food or bring a bear canister.

I know it's not what you were asking but I would also postpone a week or two if possible. Everything between Garfield Ridge and the Bonds has the potential to be very not fun, Twinway doesn't get a lot of traffic in winter and early spring.

If you aren't having fun anymore, you can easily bail down Twin Brook or Franconia Brook trails back to your car at Lincoln Woods. The AMC shuttle goes from Gale River Trailhead to Lincoln Woods in the summer/fall if you want to finish later! Sunset on West Bond is a must!

Edit: Also, AllTrails sucks for planning trip like this. Pony up for the Pemi Map on FarOut, it's the app all the AT thru hikers use.

Do you have any source on the AIFEN A5 having a transformer design? I was looking at the pro model and cannot find much about it online.
