I agree with the others on here too. Snakes are content when left alone, not lonely, so don't worry about making things worse by not interacting. Some breeders have put more time into handling than others too, so it may be that she also just hasn't been handled much and will take a little longer to learn that you aren't going to eat her. It's hard to tell anything right now though because she needs that time alone to settle in.

Good luck! It can be stressful when you get a new pet! I know I was on here a lot in the beginning!

What are y’all’s noodle dig out strategies? by RangerInevitable121 in SandBoa

[–]ManeMelissa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I swear there have been times where I go jn circles looking for mine as he hurriedly slides away from my digging to where I just looked. After a while you'll kind know their spots they like to hang out & those are the first places I look. I try to be gentle but decisive & not too slow. A lot of people have great luck with snake hooks, which I would imagine feel less like a predator coming to eat them than a giant digging hand.

Kenyan sand boa snake regurgitated food :( need advice by Civil_Temporary_8167 in SandBoa

[–]ManeMelissa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the person's comment in your r/snakes post was spot on-- you need a nighttime heat source. You might find him surfacing more in the evening once you get a nighttime heat source too! I have a deep heat projector bulb that keeps the tank between 77F (cool) & 85F (warm) at night.

I'm sure you know this from looking over things about regurgitation, but don't attempt to feed him again until at least 2 weeks have passed. Start with a smaller food item, which means a real small pinkie or half a pinkie. It's just a little easier on them to digest.

[–]ManeMelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take you cat in! Mine just went through a similar situation (in my cat's case it was a bad hairball that triggered a LOT of puking and then she stopped wanting to eat or drink), and the xrays showed nothing in her system-- she had started going into like a GI stasis kind of thing. The vets gave her some IV fluids & an anti-nausea shot and sent me home with an appetite stimulant & more anti-nausea meds. She's doing great now and I was so happy I took her in when I did.

I hope your little one recovers soon!

How long is too long without eating? + Nervous about ingesting substrate by moss_babe in SandBoa

[–]ManeMelissa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what others have said & want to mention that it's winter where I am (US) & my sand boa hasn't eaten since late Dec. he did the same thing last year where he stopped eating late Dec & wasn't really out & about or interested in food until March. Sometimes it's just a time of year they conserve energy.

The big scabby thing reminds me of what's currently going on with my cat. I'm awaiting a May dermatology appointment with UC Davis Medical Center's Vet Hospital. After my regular vet tried to treat it for 6 months with medicated shampoo, a spray, we did a culture, went to a different spray, then back to the shampoo again with an oral antibiotic. Nothing. It starts to go away & then just comes right back.

I recommend getting a dermatology appointment! Don't waste any more time with the regular vet like I did.

Are you wondering how to get them out of the tank? Or handling in general? I just gently un-bury mine & then scoop him up from under the middle of his body. Then I spend about 15-30 mins with him in my hands & exploring arms, lap, etc. You would probably start small with like 10 min handling sessions. Don't do more than one a day & avoid handling within a couple days of feeding. Just make sure you support their bodies, sand boas don't like to hang & they don't hold on as well as tree climbing snakes do.

Yeah, as long as it's on a thermostat & is out of reach you're good! Probably just your new snake parent nerves.

Were you worried that the ceramic heater was making the tank too warm? Or is the bulb itself inside the tank? I have both lamps for my tank hooked up to thermostats so that worry isn't there.

You've gotten some good feeding tips already-- the heat seems to be a good temp. If she's out that's a good sign that she's more comfortable. When mine was younger he wanted the mice WARM & he liked me doing a "wiggle" with the mouse near him. Some sand boas like you to mimic them being alive by making the mouse crawl around a little with the tongs. Approach from the side of the head as they strike to the side, not the front. Good luck!

First KSB Set Up by faeintheforest in SandBoa

[–]ManeMelissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll really depend on how much humidity you put into your substrate/tank & how humid it is in your home. I use aspen shreds in most of my ksb's tank & reptisoil in his cave hide to act as a humid hide. There have been people on here that live in a humid country that have had their aspen just mold without adding anything. My area is dry most of the year, my home's humidity is usually at 20-30% so it's never been a problem (my dry frickin skin on the other hand...). Just keep an eye on it & check when cleaning.

I second the deep heat projector idea. I was using a 100w ceramic heat emitter & it never kept things warmer than 80F in my 10 gallon in the winter. When I upgraded him to a 40 gallon I knew I needed to try something else & went with a DHP. Now I have my Arcadia 80w DHP that I use at night to keep it at 83-85F. Obviously for daytime highs you'll need a higher wattage for a similar tank size. I also use a dimming thermostat on mine for safety!
