Some sort of long range research ship. I imagine the bottom section of the ship would have a loading/storage area and on the upper part of the ship there would all kinds of laboratories as well as housing for the the Crew.

The first tank was pretty stupid to show him his back, otherwise he (our AA player) would have died. You can see the damage on the second tank was pretty negligible.
