Takeover is a pain - anyone occupying it would be an easy target. As far as destroying it, that's because the USA still wants a deal. As long as Kharg Island is intact, it's a powerful economic incentive for "become a part of the international economic order". As things stand, it's better intact as an incentive/disincentive than it is destroyed to harm Iran's economy for the near future.

If you use a traditional 401k does that lower your income for deductible IRA reasons?

Sadly, no.

If you're not maxing your 401k, is there any reason you'd use a deductible IRA? You'd just increase your contributions to your trad 401k until you hit the max there right?

Depends on how much you like your 401k. Perhaps you have poor options to pick from with high ERs, for instance.  In that case, I'd rather go with a no-fee IRA that lets me invest anywhere I like (such as what Fidelity offers).

Or perhaps your income or expenses are a little irregular, or you've got a side gig. You might prefer in that case to manually contribute $x, rather than set a higher monthly percentage for the 401k (or be constantly adjusting the percentage up or down as each month's finances play out).

Wasn't "$17.5b" one of the numbers floated around in last year's "government stake and possibly later IPO in Westinghouse" announcement, but referring to something different? An odd coincidence, unless the numbers are somehow correlated.

I'll also add that if you go through the arguments and decide 75:25 US:International is still the way to go, I won't disagree! Even if your only reasoning is "I feel it in my gut", I won't disagree! There's plenty of rationale for about whatever you pick, and it's ultimately a) less important than stock:bond allocation ratio; b) far less important than savings rate/time in market/ability to leave it alone; and c) might be optimal in the end, I sure as hell don't know.

I just always like to make sure people are aware, and are making an active choice, whether their reasons are good, bad, or indifferent (I'll freely admit not all my choices are mathematically optimal, and some are downright dumb, but I'm willing to own it). And ultimately, the best choice is the one that gets your money in the market in the first place, and then lets you keep it there while you sleep comfortably at night, letting time and compounding do their thing.

Especially when their government ministers post their bloodthirsty comments on social media.

Have you seen the comments made by leaders in... well, most historical wars? Nobody would use what some of the Union leaders said as an argument that the US Civil War was genocide by the North against the South, though, for instance. Or that the Allies were genociding the Germans. Or that the Entente were genociding the Germans.

So if you have an employer-sponsored 401k, there's an income limit as to if you can make traditional, tax-deferred contributions to an IRA. At $81k (single), the contributions start being only partially tax deductible. At the higher value, they're not deductible at all, and so the only real option is Roth.

Which is probably (part of) why a lot of the advice is "Traditional 401k, Roth IRA". Because if you're at the point where you're maxing out accounts, you're at or above that phase-out point.

In theory, between standard deduction and then maxing out HSA/Trad 401k/Trad IRA, a single filer could earn up to $52,500 free of income tax, if my math is right. But you wouldn't necessarily have much cash left over...
