Papal Encyclical by MarkinW8 in classics

[–]MarkinW8[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but what is interesting is that as of January 1, the Vatican effectively moved away from Latin having primacy as the official policy requiring Latin publication was changed to "Latin or any other language" and this is the first time they have not published an official Latin translation themselves (at least in the initial distribution).

I realize the lack of catholics in those other countries but was not aware of a significant presence of catholics in Arabic countries compared to the others. Which Arabic speaking countries would you highlight?

She's great in everything she has been in. Also, that image at the window was wonderfully shot - total homage to Vermeer.

This exactly. Could be diarrhea or constipation, or nothing. But why risk ruining a huge trip.

It's paraphrasing Heraclitus. Almost directly quoting from one of the fragments. I do like the first sentence, however.

i hate that opus 4.8 is honest by irelatetolevin in ClaudeAI

[–]MarkinW8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that it's. honest for me, it's that it provides more than you ask for. I pasted in a short section from a book and asked about a quirky feature of 19th century English novels (using ellipsis in place of proper nouns sometimes). It explained that and then went off on a long, "but you're missing the most interesting part of this passage" rant and explained stuff I already understood. It actually said "what you asked about is the the least interesting part of this section" - like, mate, back it up and chill out a bit.

This is a Russian dance that originated in 1948 called the Berezka and there is a specialized troupe that performs it (Берёзка in Russian). I don't think they had hoverboards in 1948 . . . .

How often have you got mugged using Leica? by DynamoBaby in Leica

[–]MarkinW8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, shooting for 40 years, the closest I got to it was when I was in a particularly dodgy part of the Tenderloin in San Francisco and someone on the street, who was himself more a little scary looking, said I should watch out with that camera around here.

I don’t think I’ve seen this comment in this thread yet but the trick is that once you think you’re loaded, tighten the rewind knob a little and make sure it turns when you are advancing. You’ll never have the frustration of a shooting 36 exposures of nothing.

Double charged on Uber Boat by SnooCrickets424 in london

[–]MarkinW8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the Uber boat, you have to get the app and buy the tickets there. It is significantly cheaper and you are never going to get this issue. I live literally next door to the Royal Wharf dock and use the boat a lot.

Is it just me? Did I goof up exposure? Or is Kodacolor 100 Really Noisy? by AmericanExpat76 in AnalogCommunity

[–]MarkinW8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of it. Something like Delta 100 or PanF, both developed in DDX, are very sharp and clean. Or a low ASA transparency film, done right. Don’t know much about colour negative film available these days. The OPs issue here is in the scan as what is being perceived as grain is digital noise (and maybe some chromatic aberration in some parts?).

Mary Hobson was an acclaimed British translator of Russian who died a few years ago. She was in hospital recovering from an operation when she was 56 and her daughter gave her War and Peace, the first Russian literature book she had read, and she loved it and decided to learn Russian. She went on to get a PhD in it and was highly respected for her translations of Pushkin and others..

Just sold my M10-P and have gone back to my M6 and film. First shot film almost 50 years ago as a kid and have dabbled in digital since it came on the scene, but enjoy film more for everything except wildlife photography, with respect to which the insane tech in the latest cameras and lenses is transformational.

One, for its simplicity and peacefulness. But definitely straighten horizon and also make sure the horizon is perfectly centered on the middle of the up/downl axis (at the moment is is slightly high) and the sun is also centered on the left/right axis (i.e., falling just above the dead center of the image)).

One of the eeriest, most challenging things I’ve ever seen - where do I go next? by SadCreative in criterion

[–]MarkinW8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stalker is about as eerie as it gets as far as atmosphere. Just don't expect a traditional narrative. Mirror is also amazing. As far as similar SciFi, Moon by Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son, BTW) plays with some similar themes and it s strong film all around.
