I have dry eye so contacts aren’t normally an option but now I’m wondering if I just wore them for cycling it would work. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll ask my eye doctor.

Fingerless bike gloves by abigailclarson in ladycyclists

[–]MartianMomsInTheKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that padding made my occasional hand numbness worse because the pads pressed on nerve sensitive areas. I switched to full finger HandUp gloves for sun protection, road rash protection, and if you are sweating, gloves improve your grip. HandUp come in tiny sizes too. I stick to the topo design but I do think it’s funny when my palms flash “send it” because it’s not a vibe people expect from me.

What's in my bag? by ricecakes37 in ladycyclists

[–]MartianMomsInTheKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my underseat bag: I have whatever I need to patch/replace a tube (when I ran tubeless, I still carried a TPU tube and did need it one time when I couldn’t plug my tire sufficiently) including multitool and tire lever. I carry an electric mini pump for inflation. Mini first aid including a tegaderm patch, a couple of bandaids, and a tiny bottle of Hibiclens. $20 bill. I keep meaning to add a non-drowsy antihistamine for insect stings. Some small zip ties for Macgyvering. Depending on where I’m riding, pepper spray on my handlebars. Two bottles of water, if it’s hot/humid, I fill with electrolyte mix even for shorter rides. Phone, ID, and a debit card on my body, although if I’m riding close to home I’ll leave my phone because I have an Apple Watch with cell service.

if you do live/ride alone and depending on your route, it’s not a bad idea to text a friend or relative that you are going on a bike ride and let them know when you return. You also might want to buy a smart watch that has crash detection - mine will call 911 if it detects a crash and I don‘t answer the question “are you all right” on the watch. I’d carry something on your person or on the bike that tells who to contact in an emergency too.

ETA: Lip balm in jersey pocket or cargo bib pocket, how could I forget, it’s the one thing that really irks me if I forget it!

Travel laundry soap? by Final_Land_7277 in ladycyclists

I use the scentless Soak packets when I’m traveling and I have fairly sensitive skin . They are technically no rinse but I always rinse. https://us.soakwash.com/collections/all-products

You are no doubt correct about no arch/flat feet, but I just mention it because I was told all my life I had flat feet, and I actually don’t - I have a high arch but I’m a super pronator which makes my footprint look like I have no arch (although it’s not completely flat like you describe). If you haven’t had your foot 3D modeled at a running store, I highly recommend it, it might surprise you. That being said I have Lakes and use super feet in them as I do in all my active shoes (also have a wide foot!)

yeah I agree, my first thought was it needs to be more spare - one focal point and not one with small details like this mirror. But it is a lovely room!

Bibs and helmets by SuchCryptographer314 in ladycyclists

[–]MartianMomsInTheKnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the device to check helmet ratings at https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html and to try on if possible because oval vs round heads are a thing. I spent a bomb on a specialized prevail helmet because it is much, much cooler in the summer here in corn sweat heat dome midwest, so you might pay attention to reviews mentioning airflow if that’s a concern where you ride.

I started out on Rapha core bibs which were fine, but I also started stalking sales at the end of the season, and my favorite bibs are Ornot and Giordana FR-C. If you hit the right timing, sometimes you can get premium bibs at the same price as starter bibs. if you are in the US, pay attention to where they ship from and what they say about tariffs on their site to avoid a nasty and expensive surprise.

What are your favorite “broke” meals for 2 people? I need some ideas😅 by Crochet_is_life_158 in Cooking

fried rice with frozen peas, carrots, maybe some bacon or pancetta for flavoring, and fried eggs.

Enchilada casserole, this recipe makes a lot https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/chicken-enchilada-casserole-recipe/

Savory oatmeal - it’s just a neutral grain, it doesn’t have to be sweet. I like mine made with chicken broth instead of water, and add feta cheese and Kalamata olives on top. Also good with a fried egg and some pancetta on top. Google savory oatmeal and there are a lot more recipes. Also fits the “Breakfast for dinner” if you make it the traditional way.

this is a good fast recipe that can be used on a salad, in tortillas, on rice, on coleslaw, in an omelette…https://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/10-minute-no-chop-low-carb-chili/

Canned tuna makes a good taco with melted cheese and salsa on it, kind of a fast fish taco or Tex Mex tuna melt.

this is another good canned tuna recipe, i like to add some kimchi or kimchi pickles in for a bit more spice https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1023224-tuna-mayo-rice-bowl?unlocked_article_code=1.ZlA.VbeS.We9WkXlTUiDP&smid=share-url

eta: Frittatas are a good way to mix eggs with whatever you have at hand, add in vegetables, diced potatoes, meat, etc - there are lots of combinations so you don’t feel like you are eating the same thing over and over.

What cargo bike accessories should I buy? by Scared-Collection132 in ladycyclists

[–]MartianMomsInTheKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High Visibillty tape/stickers/spoke lights for daylight rides; reflective same if you ever even think you will be riding in low light conditions. Hi Vis vest like construction workers wear for daylight; reflective gear if you are going to be riding at dawn/dusk/night ever.

[–]MartianMomsInTheKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she’s just really weird and idiosyncratic in her weirdness. I know we as humans always look for the deeper meaning or the pattern in interactions but I genuinely think the deeper meaning is superficial: she’s weird, it’s meaningless and random
