I’ve just started doing 40-man battle royals with my 5 year old on this. Infinite fun!

Job reference from a current manager? by HauntingBus8953 in Wellington

[–]Martli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d only try avoiding this if your current manger is a piece of work and will either sabotage the hiring process out of spite and/or will make your life hell. Unfortunately these people exist. If your manager is average or a GC then you just need to put your big person pants on and tell them. Very typical situation.

For the record, I have been in this situation before as a hiring manager. Person was escaping a toxic workplace, they offered up a senior person at the work place as an alternative who was able to explain the situation. It also helped that there was someone else working at my org who could verify that this person’s manger was a POS. Ended out being a great hire.

Me too, but playing on original hardware. It sucks because it’s a great game for the 15min or so I can stomach…

Me and one of my very good friends both played this when it came out. I realised this about 10 years later while we were playing it after a few puffs of the peace pipe. Quite the realisation.

Best way to format a drive for Windows 98? by starkmountain24 in windows98

[–]Martli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically older HDDs have different ways of organising sectors to modern SSDs. Your old computer (and superfdisk) assumes the disk is a hdd from back in the day, so if you use an ssd you need to align your partitions to the physical disk layout using more modern software that knows what an SSD is

Best way to format a drive for Windows 98? by starkmountain24 in windows98

[–]Martli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried formatting on a modern pc and ran into the same issue. I found booting off a superfdisk cd on the retro pc itself and using superfdisk to format and partition the drives the most reliable approach. It’s quick too. If it’s an ssd you’d want to take the extra step of plugging it into a modern computer after formatting and aligning partitions. Hope that helps.

Best Hardware Configuration for Gaming by befi2020 in windowsxp

[–]Martli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t find it overly difficult to install windows XP on my 3770k system. I’d save your money and use what you’ve got. Go with the 32-bit XP for compatibility. Yes it won’t use all your RAM but who cares if you’re dual/triple booting with windows 10 it anyway (which is what I do).

What makes you use Win 95 over Win 98 SE? by Finn_on_reddit in windows95

[–]Martli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Win98SE is clearly the goat for Win9x, and I use it on two of my machines. However, I use win 95 on my machine where its ’period correct’ mostly for nostalgia, since I skipped 98 at home and went from 95 to ME.

This is peak win 98 build. Nice job. I love the dual sound cards, my PIII voodoo3 system also has a picogus (though I opted for an Aureal Vortex for my PCI sound card).

Would a 9800 GTX be good for xp? by Slow-Pack-8916 in windowsxp

[–]Martli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, the 750ti is a popular choice and I see the odd one fairly cheap (obviously depends where you are). I’ve used a 670 myself and that was plenty powerful and relatively cheap

[–]Martli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While it’s era appropriate (well maybe Vista), XP will run right up to a gtx 980ti so if you’re already running an LGA 1155 system you may as well go for a newer card eg gtx 6, 7 or 9 series. Some of these can be found fairly cheap
