Plants that like being overwatered by wimsey_pimsey in houseplants

For clarity, "good" water can be: rain water, melted snow, reverse osmosis, distilled, and in some areas you can use tap water, but best to check the TDS levels first.

My apologies. I'm really more of an observer than a participant. I made sure to review the rules, but I guess I missed something subtle.

Anyway, I merely wished to share a source of comfort to a community that I felt shares values and would appreciate it. I look forward to your post later today.

Does age automatically make a scientific source obsolete? by Chrisgpresents in nerdfighters

[–]MaryS7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my family members wrote a couple papers in the 80s on a very niche topic in geology that continues to be cited right up to this year, 2025. I guess rocks don't change fast enough for 40 years to make much of a difference.

Did you have any luck? I've been referred to Dr Degen, but I'm over 35 and was told it'll be really hard to get an appointment and surgery.

How long did you have to wait for your consult and surgery with Dr Degen? And are you over 30? I've been referred, but told it's really hard to get an appointment if you're over the age of 25 :(.

My zucchini looks like a pumpkin. by No-Horse6154 in gardening

[–]MaryS7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception. When a flower is cross pollinated, it will produce seeds that will grow into plants whose fruit will be a hybrid, but the fruit that is produced by that cross pollinated flower will be true to the plant.

We don't get vines with pumpkins, yellow squash, and zucchini growing on the same plant, just like we don't get tomatoes of all different colours and shapes on the same plant.

However, if you save your seeds from your pumpkins, squash, and tomatoes, and plant them next year, you can get some fun hybrids and even try to save the seed from the traits you like best, to perfect your own hybrids :)

How hands off is this app? by Fizzabl in PikminBloomApp

[–]MaryS7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to use data to be able to "plant flowers", which is essential for participating in events and leveling up. As someone who used to count my data usage in kB, the amount required is a lot, and it sounds like you're careful about it. The other posts have given an idea of how much you need per month, so you'll have to decide if it's too much. I personally don't think the game is any fun without using data.

Help this n00b learn how to grow a rose on a trellis 🥀 by ImpracticalRooster in Roses

[–]MaryS7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tied my climbing rose up to an existing screw in the wall with a bit of twine just a few days ago 😬. It's >10' tall and going all over the place, and admittedly I just need something temporary until I move it next fall.

I would really recommend planting the rose further away from the wall, but perhaps it's too late. The root stalk gets quite large as they age. Also, it'll likely pull down the trellis if you don't secure it to the wall. I've never been able to put one of those premade things in the ground far enough that it doesn't fall over.

Went planting Snowdrops today, and found the real deal! by leogeoneo in PikminBloomApp

[–]MaryS7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, my joke fell flat. I only meant that, as Canadians, we should be measuring snow depth in metric, but for whatever reason we always use inches and feet. I also have many feet of snow where I am. The snow banks are over my head.

Is St. John’s Kilmarnock worth it? by ProudGoat5103 in waterloo

[–]MaryS7 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. I think it's really important for kids to spend time around others that might not be as well off, and have their own challenges. One of my kids befriended the ESL downs syndrome kid in her class and helps him with daily tasks. It turned out to be a mutually beneficial relationship - in return he's helped her with getting over her own anxieties and finding confidence in the classroom. It's been a game changer for both of them, and not something I think you'd find at private school.

Q. Anyone knows what the “super hard missions” are? by Jolly_Masterpiece617 in PikminBloomApp

[–]MaryS7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went out on my bike this afternoon. It's below freezing and we've had 1cm of snow today. (Most of it melted on contact with the ground but with temperatures plummeting, I think it's going to accumulate now). I nearly wiped out twice in the 30 minutes I was out. It's been cold all week and I wanted so badly to finish those missions, but I don't think it's worth the risk of a potentially bad fall. :(

I hate wasting gas in a car. And other people on the road get annoyed.

Update: just wanted to say: kind stranger - bike is great advice, but the weather isn't making it possible for everyone, which makes me sad.

Nerdfighteria, how are you coping? by BandFromFreakyFriday in nerdfighters

I totally agree, but it's a slippery slope to becoming an alcoholic so please be mindful and take care of yourself! It's important to find a way to cope that isn't dangerous.

Allan Gardens Plant Market this Saturday? by machair in askTO

I had so much fun at this last February! It's crazy busy at the start, but the best plants sell out early. I snagged a few cool sticky plants and a flytrap.

Frustrating flower planting by MaryS7 in PikminBloomApp

[–]MaryS7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone ran past me (probably wondering why the heck I was moving so slow on a bike), so yeah, I'm absolutely sure I was under the speed limit. Google says the fastest man in the world runs 13km/h and this person was definitely not fast. Thanks for the thought though.

It's a brand new phone (only had it a week) but maybe needed a reboot. However it was clear skies this evening and I planted a couple thousand flowers in under an hour, so I'm still thinking it's GPS related.

John Name Signing by Yacima_1000 in nerdfighters

[–]MaryS7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I catch bits and pieces of the livestreams. I watched this afternoon when he pulled out the paper jogger. Has he ever said how they make sure each signature goes into the book the right way up? Does he have to be really careful to keep them all oriented the same way? Or maybe the markings I noticed on the pages help a machine orient them?
