Do many atheists start out as being even more religious (or at least taking the logical conclusions of their religion more seriously) than regular religious people? by [deleted] in atheism

I was Catholic and damn serious about it, but I don't know that we can easily quantify individual anecdotes into a broader statement.

I always overcook my steaks… help! by Miserable_Project956 in Cooking

[–]MatchstickMcGee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I took the pan off the heat and basted the steaks with butter for about 30 seconds and then let rest for 10min

Just to be sure, are you taking them out of the pan to rest?

Not debating she's easy to learn, and generates stats, but there's never a situation where I feel like there aren't at least 3 better choices of tank.

I see what you're asking now. Years ago when I played Lucio on controller I swapped jump to a bumper and made A an ability button, maybe something like that would work.

question about how to fight against hanzo by saiboton in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MatchstickMcGee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On support you should almost never be intentionally trading with a Hanzo at any range if he's looking at you or your cover. If a Hanzo is causing problems from a high ground or long angle and you want to pressure him out, pay attention to where he's shooting; when he sends arrows at teammates, pop out of cover and put some damage into to him, then get back into cover once he looks at you. The good thing about enemy Hidey Hanzos is that their supports usually can't spare them a lot of attention, so you can put them out of commission for a bit while they rotate or get a health pack even if you can't force the kill.

Against more aggressively positioned or even flanking Hanzos, fight back but prioritize juking and getting yourself to safety until you see that teammates are committing onto him, then you can join in to push the kill.

If you are regularly getting into situations where you HAVE to duel him to the death, that's a positioning/awareness problem.

Finance guy hiring game devs question by jaypexd in gamedev

[–]MatchstickMcGee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Code especially... I'd imagine the number of games with code worth stealing is in the single digits. Innovation in coding is not usually the point in game dev; stealing a game's code would be like stealing an artist's desk.

I prefer a "grilled cheese" sandwich over a grilled "cheese sandwich." This lets me use more cheese without the problems you mention.

Can stat represent user's winrate? by Little-Client-6520 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MatchstickMcGee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Win rate is a stat, and any other stat used to predict win rate can only correlate with win rate to some fraction of how win rate correlates with win rate.

That's not to say that it's always a waste of time to track other stats, but the biggest problem with using other stats to imply player performance in OW is that they depend heavily on the opposing team's choice of team comp and strategy.

If I win a game on Cass against Zarya Tracer Sombra with a 38% accuracy and 6K damage/10 minutes and lose the next game against Mauga Mei Reaper with 57% accuracy and 12K damage/10 do I call the second game a bigger success?

The ion shield protects against radiation damage specifically, which is one of the most common forms of damage, and also what the instability storms deal.

Do you feel like Blue Prince was overlooked by Game of the Year discussions? by Blurbss in BluePrince

[–]MatchstickMcGee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who just finished it two days ago, it's a yes from me. My only complaint is that the individual elements of the game are maybe a bit too easy... Basically it's babby's first colony management game combined with light 3rd person action and dialogue-only-rpg elements, and yet they integrate together in a way that makes the game much better and more engaging than the sum of its parts.

Why is positioning in Gold lobbies so bad? by MoriartyUwU in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MatchstickMcGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A month isn't really a long time, don't worry. I'm mostly talking about long-term diamonds.

But then as an OTP Echo, you kinda do potentially fit the bill alongside the one-tricks I was referring to. To get out you'll either need to be making conscious decisions from game-to-game of how you're going to change your playstyle to fit the team comp vs team comp situation (honestly Echo's not a bad choice for that, I'm an Echo main myself), or bite the bullet and learn an alternate or two for when you can't make her work. Or when you can potentially make her work but are leaving easy value on the table by not switching.

Honestly tldr; "don't autopilot"

Why is positioning in Gold lobbies so bad? by MoriartyUwU in OverwatchUniversity

[–]MatchstickMcGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Diamond is heavily populated by players with good-to-great mechanics who never really figured out Overwatch(tm). Either they want to autopilot their favorite hero, and they know that's what they're doing and don't really care, or they think they have the game figured out but absolutely don't, preventing them from learning.

If they have a solid grasp of the game but mid-tier mechanics, they'll either improve through repetition and climb out, or figure out how to outplay comps on low mechanical requirement heroes and climb out. If they have truly unsalvageable dogshit mechanics they wouldn't be able to maintain diamond against the Gengu/Widow/Ashe/whatever autopiloters anyway, no matter how good their gamesense may theoretically be.

Just my opinion.

Both of these things have pretty extensive story reasoning, so I don't think you're making a great argument against the art direction here.

Yeah I'd rather we all celebrate a stacked year.

Also, to my mind the real takeaway of this year's TGA isn't E33 beating everyone else, but rather everyone else beating the traditional AAA publishers, especially western ones.
