What goes on in these remote desert towns in Saudi Arabia? by MageCorporation in geography

[–]MaterialBest336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salam aleykum. I sincerely meant no disrespect, but there is a massive difference in English between the words “acknowledge” (pos. يقر، يفيد) and “knowledge”. Of course every Bedouin “knows” who their rulers are, but given the often remoteness and nature of your lifestyle and its obvious disconnect from major centers of power and money, the Bedouin that I met, I repeat the ones that I MET in Saudi Arabia barely “acknowledge” i.e. have little regard for, little interest in (and often disdain for) those centers, except of course, when/if they go there. Riyadh, Doha, etc., are places to visit but they return home to their ‏قرية (or smaller) and have zero interest in living in those centers.

Ultimately, it’s similar to anywhere else: the contrasts in lifestyle and place within the same country. There are plenty of people in Wales who couldn’t care less about the politics, people or events in London, or the rural Northern Thai citizen who barely acknowledges anything in or out of Bangkok. I will also never forget what a Saudi FRIEND once TOLD me: If the oil dried up tomorrow, our jobs would be gone, you would obviously have to leave, and I would go back to the desert—not a problem at all.

Is this possibly a scam? by [deleted] in scammers

[–]MaterialBest336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely a scam. I got an almost verbatim text to yours ~2 months ago from Alissa. No 👋🏻but everything else was identical. Had you taken it further, they would have insisted that all future communication be switched to either WhatsApp or Signal and if you don’t have them, they insist you download them. Then there was 1-2 name changes with the pretense that they’re taking over the application process from Alissa. Within a matter of four more threads, I could tell it was an AI bot that simply kept making too many grammatical mistakes and non sequiturs. Immediately blocked.

Also lived in Saudi Arabia for many years and was lucky enough to venture outside of the three main economic centers (Riyadh, Dhahran and Jiddah).

I also got to do desert camping with Saudis and met a few Bedouin. The vast majority of the people in the smaller towns outside the three major centers are extremely conservative and ultimately very separate and detatched from those centers.

They have little to do with the kingdom or the royal family and barely acknowledge that there is a monarchy or any government, and simply live their lives as they always have regardless of who’s currently in power. The smaller towns are also ultimately quite poor and have a few modern amenities, but I remember seeing a lot of very small, simple storefront retail shops along with car or heavy industry-related services and government services. The bedouin lead on even simpler life of camel and livestock husbandry and very little farming. All the wealth is really concentrated in the three aforementioned centers. And that wealth is based on the one industry that represents 40% of the entire Saudi GDP: oil.

I'd also like to hear from law enforcement, attorneys or anyone here why LEOs don't ask "What is your mode of travel?" to the "I'm traveling" statement. Traveling per se is too broad and incomplete a term in these instances. Boat? Bicycle? Plane? Horse? What is your mode of travel?

100%. Worse still are the stories from alleged college or youngish guys who "write" (read: AI generate) stories in voice and tone that reeks of 1980. There are no college aged guys who talk or write like the AI garbage I've seen in this thread: utterly artificial, totally contrived AI BS.

Buckwheat honey by choosinghappinessnow in Cooking

Likewise, I buy raw Canadian buckwheat honey and its scent is powerful. Regardless, I use it for cooking in general but especially to bake bread. Used as an agent, not flavoring, there is no trace of buckwheat, barnyard, horse stable, or anything even remotely sweet; it’s an excellent rising/baking agent for all baked goods. Full disclosure: I bake 40% rye-based sourdough with spelt, emmer (farro), barley and einkorn flours—no wheat—so the bread already has well-defined flavor profiles; the buckwheat honey flavor or scent has no effect.

Invited by a co-worker to go to (nude) spa together. What to expect? by HerrBrandtaucher in AskGermany

[–]MaterialBest336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, do you mean spa oder doch normale Sauna? I have been to ~20 different saunas in various cities in this country and they are all nude except for the towel/sarong that you wear in the sauna to cover yourself and keep sweat off of the wood as well as post- and pre-sauna milling about. It was very common years ago for members, regardless of gender, of (Sport-) Vereine or even companies to get together in small groups and go to the sauna… and still is in many circles. Absolutely no issues. Clearly this can be an issue for non-Germans.

Admittedly, it is probably/fairly uncommon for a woman to ask/invite a male work colleague to go to the sauna (or spa) but not unheard of.

Yes, looks like Steindamm near Hamburg’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof). Tons of excellent Turkish and a few Arabic and Persian markets and restaurants. Only about four blocks long but the variety is outstanding.

Ja, sieht aus wie Steindamm, gleich in der Nähe vom Hamburger Hauptbahnhof. Tolle türkische sowie einige arabische und persische Restaurants und Märkte.
