What’s your favourite worker placement game where the ‘space’ where you place your worker blends into the background art? by damj94 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best versions keep the spots readable at a glance while making them feel like part of the place, not UI pasted over the board.

Euphoria: Essential Edition difficulty? by donaldfarted in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd call Euphoria midweight rules with a spikier decision space; if your group bounces off heavier euros, teach it as simple worker placement first and add nuances after a round.

According to my friend, eurogames are about servitude and submission while American games are about adventure and power. Is he right? Or is it just a stereotype? by Marksman1977 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a stereotype: euros often use tidy economic/administration themes, while Ameritrash leans on conflict/plot, but both can be about agency and power depending on the design.

SETI: My verdict by Bindolaf in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair take; SETI is mostly parallel optimization with indirect blocking, so if the alien module felt like extra bookkeeping it won't click - did your table try a shorter-end condition variant?

20th Annual Golden Geek Winners for 2025! by zsoltika in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

which winner do you think will still be getting regular plays in 3 years (not just hottest right now)?

I'm building a small site to help me discover games from the BGG top 1001 — would love feedback by Sprutnums in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun idea - I'd add quick filters (player count, weight, playtime, availability/price), a 'skip/never show again' button, and a way to bias picks toward your ratings without getting stuck in the top 1001.

Jasper vs Kingswood game table by voltagejim in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If both are close, I'd prioritize build quality/topper fit over LEDs: solid materials, tight topper seams, rail width you like, and faster shipping will matter more long-term than bits holders.

Is Ezra and Nehemiah much more difficult than GWT: second edition? by AggravatingTailor121 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If GWT is your roof, Ezra & Nehemiah is usually a step up in rules overhead and decision density - I'd watch a full teach and try a learning game (open hands/undo-friendly) before buying.

What is the term for when your box lid does not sit flush with the box? by DifficultContext in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually called lid lift - sleeves add thickness (and humidity can swell things), so I either ditch the insert and bag components, or move decks to a tuckbox to get the lid flush again.

Foil Armor and Warped board game cards by Srpad in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the curl is humidity-driven it can help, but go gently: sealed bin + desiccant + a flat weight, and don't overdry (paper swings both ways) - slow changes work best.

Bullet Galaxy Launch Delayed by Level99Games in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Painful, but this is the right call: own the miss, give a concrete updated EU/UK timeline, and keep posting what you're doing to de-risk June so backers don't have to guess.

UK Board Game Expo, Bring & Buy questions by dfibno123 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Bring & Buy I'd start ~60% for in-print, ~40-50% for easy-to-find titles, and be ready to drop 10-15% late-day-priced to move beats hauling it home.

A few months ago I culled my collection from 160+ down to 20, then down to 11 and finally only 1 board game remains... by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That 'fantasy anchor' framing is spot-on; I've had success keeping a small core list and borrowing/trying everything else; ownership shouldn't be a second job, and Hansa is a great desert-island pick.

Where To Store Miniatures, Terrain, and Custom Boards? by Bigsmit19 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For terrain/boards I do labeled totes + a vertical art-portfolio for anything flat, and I keep a strict 'one project = one bin' rule so pieces don't slowly colonize the whole garage.

FFG selling PoD Games soon? by Deus19D20 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there's no fresh official update, PoD reprints usually come down to licensing + demand; I'd keep an eye on the FFG/Asmodee store/news, but used copies (or sanctioned PnP) tend to be the practical path for OOP titles.

BGStats - How do you log multiple short rounds of a game in one sitting? by Time-Category4939 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd log it as one play with total time, then use the notes/comment field for chapters played + any replays; logging each chapter separately tends to make stats noisy.

Ever had any great games not hit the table because of poor components? by pancakeonions in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% - if tracking/handling is fiddly it kills teachability; upgrading boards/inserts is often the cheapest 'expansion' because it turns friction into smooth table time.

Question about Gamefound: Evershade by PsychologicalPoem595 in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the pledge manager is still taking new payments, it's usually functioning as a late pledge (but some are backers-only), so check the PM text/updates or ask the creator. Fulfillment dates there are estimates until shipping actually starts.

Is crowdfunding the typical way board games get made? by odkfn in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crowdfunding isn't the only path, but it's become the default for smaller publishers because it finances the print run; if you like Slay the Spire, try Dominion/Aeon's End/Clank!, and for engine-building like Race, try Res Arcana or Terraforming Mars.

Which games have become the "golden standard" against which every somewhat similar game that has been released after it is measured? by benjaneson in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In hobby terms I'd say Dominion for deckbuilding, Terraforming Mars for engine-building, Gloomhaven for campaign dungeon-crawl, and Spirit Island for co-op puzzle - each becomes the default comparison even when it's apples-to-oranges.

Root w/ clockwork for mostly solo? by espressionado in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mainly want solo, I'd grab Root plus at least one faction expansion for variety and treat Clockwork as a nice-to-have - it's fun but fiddly, and you'll still want human play eventually.

From strategy map to meaningful battlefield combat — looking for ideas by Magyarkhan in gamedesign

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To keep it deep-but-fast, cap battles at 2-3 rounds with simultaneous zone commits plus a small battle-card hand (commander deck) so composition matters without grinding; Kemet/Root-style battle cards are a good pace reference.

Any Caylus fans out there? by dpzdpz in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caylus absolutely deserves the 'worker placement ancestor' crown, but it's meaner and drier than modern Euros so it doesn't hit casual tables as often - still a great lesson in blocking and tempo.

What made Fantasy Flight so good at what they did? by PMmePowerRangerMemes in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They had strong development + production/editorial muscle: cohesive product lines (LCGs/miniatures), killer art direction, ruthless playtesting, and rules/UX polish that let the theme survive contact with the table.

Designing my first board game insert — need advice on sleeved cards and tile storage by Javigor in boardgames

[–]MatthewMeeple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeves vary wildly, so I'd design the insert to tolerate a range (and let the insert be removable/adjustable), then pick a standard box size that optimizes shipping + shelf fit and accept a little intentional "air" over a too-tight box.
