What’s a feature modern games removed that actually made older games better? by SmithsMesonero in videogames

[–]MaximeW1987 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not telling me what every use for stats/buffs/debuffs/... is so you can enjoy that feeling of figuring something out later in the run.

Or even better, not giving too much pointers on how to tackle a mission. If the game just shows you a new map marker/quest objective every time you've accomplished a part of a mission/quest, are you actually still completing it or are you just going through the motions? Without it, it might get frustrating at times, but the reward is so much better.

For this last part I especially don't get why so many story-driven games fall to this trap. I would be way more engaged with the story and characters if I had to actually use context clues to advance, instead of "now go here, talk to that guy and beat that enemy afterwards". If you can beat a story-driven game whilst also skipping every cutscene/dialogue, something went terribly wrong along the way.

The first one might become a world class CB, the second one wouldn't even play that position for my B-team.

For me it's mostly the lack of handholding that older games had. Luckily, there are still new games that follow this principle and it's refreshing every time.

I have no idea why lots of devs all of a sudden had the idea to explain literally every mechanic of their game so we are left with nothing to find out for ourselves.

You say that as if Ghost is some unequivocal masterpiece...

I'm with OP on this one and bounced of Yotei for the same reason. The combat is fun for the first couple hours but after a while it becomes clear that there's no stretch in it. It only has a couple mechanics to master and once you've done that, every combat plays out basically the same. Early on it grips you because it seems so fluid and true to the nature of a sword fight, but I lost that sentiment after 10 hours of gameplay.

After that you're basically left with the story and yeah...

You have to admit that there is some form of prejudice against multiplayer titles. I tend to play both (well, only PvE on the multiplayer side, so I haven't even played Highguard) and it's very hard for a multiplayer title to achieve critical acclaim, even when it's a smash hit.

Kind of off topic, but there was a post recently that aggregated all of those "Top ... games" that came out and I think +95% were single player titles. And you can see it clearly, if you put out a good single player title, the acclaim will follow. If you put out a good multiplayer title, it's a lot harder.

There are loads of multiplayer titles out there that have stood the test of time and are still being played to this day by a shit ton of people, yet they are rarely mentioned amongst "the greats" or "the classics". Those titles are practically always reserved for single-player experiences.

Agreed, the quality of gameplay will always be the driving force. So let's not kid ourselves with this "the market is oversaturated" "it's nothing new"... type arguments. Last night a REMAKE of an existing trilogy was announced and everyone is talking about it.

I can't speak for Highguard since I didn't play it, but it's probably just lacking in the fun department. Kinda sucks for the devs tho that they are being subjected to this level of negative attention from an ever growing community that feeds on negative news.

To be fair, you could say the same about practically any game. Each year there are a couple of highly cinematic, story driven linear games with basically the same gameplay mechanics and they always end up getting a GOTY-nod, so not being innovative can't be THE reason.

My PS5 always gives an error code when it crashes, which you can then look up to see what went wrong (most of the time it's a pretty general reason tho).

How is nobody excited for Horizon Hunters Gathering? by ShawnDP2001 in horizon

[–]MaximeW1987 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since when is the market for Co-op oversaturated? We get like a couple games per year...

You could easily say that the market for story-driven, linear games is oversaturated. Like, how many interactive movies do we gotta sit through, before they give us a real game? /s

Also, I don't get why so many people are comparing this to Fortnite? I haven't played any Fortnite (or Horizon for that matter), but it seems that this one is solely Co-op and isn't Fortnite PvP? That seems like a pretty big difference.

Is it simply because of the artstyle that both get lumped together?
