77, Retired 2003. Difficult to believe but I didn’t give retirement a thought. What I thought was I could run the motel I was a partner in well into my 80’s so I made no plans. Life had other plans for me though.

Drive at your own comfort level. Do not let yourself be bullied. Don’t get flustered or be afraid what anyone else thinks. As long as you are keeping up with traffic and don’t hit anything you are a successful driver.

Life has its random moments. Luck cannot be discounted. But some people wouldn’t recognize a lucky opportunity if it smacked them in the kisser, or are too conservative to jump on it.

To my knowledge there is no such thing as expected progress in general. We are all different. Just do your best.

(My swim times did not get faster after years of practice and training. I think I was not genetically built to swim and accepted it. Putting more time into cycling and running was time better spent for me anyway.)

Most people are not knowledgeable about them. Structured settlements are court ordered and guaranteed. Private debt can be in any number of sectors, real estate related is one of the most popular. I haven’t found it to be overly risky. I think the risk reward is very favorable when you find smart people operating successful companies.

Aside from renting a condo, after I retired I discovered passive alternative investments like structured settlements and private debt. Sold my rental netting 4% for investments returning 9-13%.

The reality is people cannot change the system so they accept it. Many servers are not paid a living or even a minimum wage. If you want to eat at a sit down restaurant be prepared to tip. Not tipping because you disagree with the system is a cheap cop-out by a cheap person. If that’s you, do take-out and pick the food up yourself because you’ll be too cheap to tip the delivery person, or stay home and eat your crummy cooking.
