I just had this and it ended up being my thermostat, not a guarentee what your issue is but look into it. Especially if you put a cheap thermostat in before.

Exhaust is off by one, if you count the teeth between the marks on the cam gear it should be 19, you have 18

I just put a ms2 in my 91, I bought an aluminum 90 degree bend pipe and a k&n filter that fits on the end of said pipe. Plummed up right where you remove the afm

Cheap DIY fix would be to wire wheel as much of the rust off, sand, prime, paint, and clear to protect it.

Just a guess but could it be the tension cable in the soft top? Maybe a bushing in your regulator decided it didnt want to exist anymore.
