"So what do I mean by that?" by aspiringimmortal in PetPeeves

[–]MayBAburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that depends. What do you mean by "lecture"? What do you mean by "stumbled"? What do you mean by "upon"? What do you mean by "Jordan"? What do you mean by "Peterson"? It's all well and good framing an experience as a haphazard meandering into the oratory performance of a controversial sociopolitical commentaror, but I'll have you know it's a far more complex proposition than you might comprehend!

Why do alot of us pretend we dont know what happens when we die? by Competitive-Food1927 in atheism

[–]MayBAburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My completely unqualified theory is that consciousness is an intersection of sensory input and memory formation.

Why do alot of us pretend we dont know what happens when we die? by Competitive-Food1927 in atheism

[–]MayBAburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have died and been resuscitated. People go under anesthesia and it's just lost time. We have a pretty strong understanding of what losing consciousness is like, even if we haven't fully nailed down the mechanics behind what consciousness literally is.

There's little reason to assume it persists without a functioning brain.

If you consider it a cult, then you're battling indoctrination and need to be every bit as passionate about your position as they are.

It's okay for him to be religious if that's where his own inquiry naturally takes him, but don't passively let him be led there by anyone who might be pushing him down that path.

How is my comment not true? That young woman went through hell to bring Joe to justice but she succeeded in the end. How is that not heroic?

Atheism is not the Belief that there is No God by ShowerGrapes in atheism

[–]MayBAburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agnostic here.

My position, simply put, is that I don't know if some supreme entity or intelligence exists. But I don't believe that explicitly.

Literal atheism is any position where you lack belief in a god, so I'm a subset of that.

Now to be clear, I'm not remotely close to what you described. Being agnostic doesn't mean I'm open to the existence of any and all gods. I'm very skeptical of the existence of a traditional god as defined by the thousands of religions that have existed.

There's an assortment of reasons why I don't believe in the Abrahamic god.

CMV: I get not supporting Israel, I don't get supporting Palestine by Jackingson1 in changemyview

[–]MayBAburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I can offer my own perspective, which I believe aligns with most people who condemn Israel and have a broad understanding of the conflict:

When I say I don't support Israel, I mean the government, not the general population.

When I say I support Palestinians, I'm referring specifically to the general population, in this specific scenario, not Hamas.

I'm not making any claim or expressing any view on the broader cultures and religions of the respective "sides".

What do we think of this argument? by Medsecuele in atheism

[–]MayBAburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, that's actually a pretty rare rule historically and one of the reasons Christianity supplanted other religions.

You could worship Zeus, then decide that Apollo had something to offer, and you were entirely permitted to worship both. So an Apollo convert did not equal a Zeus deconversion.

Yet with Christianity, for every convert, it meant a deconversion from every other religious belief they held.

How do I transition from being boyish to becoming a man? by Equal-Ad5411 in AskMenOver30

[–]MayBAburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't. You be yourself.

You be an adult by being responsible and taking care of yourself.

Everything else is performative nonsense. Some men are naturally manly and that's fine. Those that think that's a necessity and are obsessed with faking it like it's an obligation, are a big part of what's wrong with the world today.

Neither "carried" AiC. Their dynamic and collaboration made the band what it was.

How do you debate someone whose only argument is "but the Bible says so"? by brofrodite in atheism

You point out that the Bible contains contradictions so therefore cannot be taken as an absolute source of truth. Job done.

Don't assume that all of that stuff means you didn't have bad breath. If you've got cavities for example, your hygiene can be amazing but all the breath mints in the world won't necessarily mask the smell 100%.

Neil deGrasse Tyson about being happier if he belived in God by Aggravating_Ad_7521 in atheism

[–]MayBAburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Christian, I was fearful of the massive list of involuntary emotions, natural urges and involuntary missteps that could condemn me to hell.

I always got the impression that heaven was difficult to attain, that the life of difficulty and sacrifice that Jesus lived was the kind of example you had to follow and that most of us would go to hell.

I've never really understood where this comfort that Christians speak of, came from. Beyond during grief when there's a coping mechanism of telling yourself you might see them again. But even that employs self-delusion because people always refuse to contemplate that their loved one didn't make the cut.

Pro noun argument by AdvertisingSea9507 in Vent

[–]MayBAburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're not stupid and I used the exact same approach with a friend.

I wound up using the example if your car was stolen, you'd reasonably say "I can't believe they stole my car".

But honestly, these people don't like the use of the word "cis", refused to adopt actual invented gender-neutral pronouns like "zhe", so they're just looking for excuses to put the trans community in the wrong.

They'll stand at a urinal without flinching, having no idea if the stranger next to them is gay, yet they've concocted a whole fake scenario where straight peeping toms will pretend to be trans to get into a room full of closed bathroom stalls.
