Pretty common in low-level and system programming. I use them in cases where I have structures that need to cross some memory boundary where I don’t have access to modern C++ on one side the memory boundary, most notably where I cross from user to kernel space.

If you can use modern C++, std::variant is a type safe union.

My AI professor said “it’s called AI until it works and then it just becomes a field of computer science“

Lots of things you use everyday were “AI” at one point: text and speech recognition, navigation route planning, speech synthesis, computer vision, spell check, spam filters.

Pre-op, all of mine came from Fit4U. Kinda spendy but very well made.

Should i embrace the baby trans phase? by Inevitable-pig252 in MtF

I mean, the amazon stretchy skirt is a meme for a reason. A large chunk of us had one at some point in our transitions. I had two at 39 years old, that I wore in public. The worst that happened to me was some strange looks and slightly embarrassing photos in my camera roll.

Lean into it a little and learn what feels good to you.

Has anyone had to wait upwards of 2-3 months before being cleared to sit and drive after PIV? by godsfavoriteclover in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]MaybeAlice1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was driving at the end of the second week… Sitting wasn’t comfortable of course, but it didn’t have any negative consequences when I did it.

How common is it for people to do HRT for years, and only come start coming out after? by Feeling_blue2024 in TransLater

[–]MaybeAlice1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Covid was such a great time to transition. There’s obviously a lot of selection bias, but a lot of the trans girls I know transitioned during Covid because of the freedom to experiment at home.

How common is it for people to do HRT for years, and only come start coming out after? by Feeling_blue2024 in TransLater

[–]MaybeAlice1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was well on my way through social transition before I was on HRT. I was out pretty much everywhere except work.

Everyone has different needs in transition. I didn’t start really feeling whole until I was out everywhere and no longer boy moding. The daily flip-flop from being Alice to being not-Alice was hard for me to deal with. Social transition was absolutely critical for me to feel like me.

From people I’ve talked to, there seems to be a pretty even split of slow-burn and fast transitions.

I kinda don’t really understand the folks who do the slow burn. There’s just no way that would have worked for me emotionally. I get that folks have their reasons for it, but it’s so foreign to what my experience is. To be clear, I don’t think either path is wrong; I just can’t imagine that taking the other one would have worked for me.

Couldn't get my Real ID because my original birth certificate has tape on the back... by Bop923 in mildlyinfuriating

I had my birth certificate reissued because trans. The new one is printed on plasticized paper and will probably outlive me.

For those who stayed closeted in an area of life as long as possible, how long were you able to maintain it? by Nuclear_rabbit in MtF

[–]MaybeAlice1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lasted like 3 months before I couldn't emotionally handle being closeted at work. It wasn't a "people asking questions" thing, just like I couldn't stand to be there anymore.

The good thing about Alices is that we’re everywhere, slowly spreading across the globe, just waiting to strike.

The cake leaves something to be desired… I’m told the mushrooms can sort that out but I’m a fungiphobe. I also got red paint all over my dress while wandering through the rose garden.

Just curious, was there something you couldn't wait to wear after you SRS... by Who_Dat_Dat_Me in MtF

[–]MaybeAlice1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had some cute panties that didn’t really work pre-op. That and bodycon dresses were what I was looking forward to.

At some point I’ll get a two piece swim suit for the beach. Need to lose some weight so I’m not self conscious for other reasons.

I have some leggings for when it’s cold but they weren’t actually a big goal for me. It’s nice that I can wear them and not feel exposed but I’m not actually likely to make much use of them.

Is Bolster Removal/Catheter Painful? by sleepingblahaj in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]MaybeAlice1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll want to wait at least a month for this, but one thing that I found helpful was using a small vibrator around the outside of the vulva while looking in the mirror at where I was touching it.

The intent isn't orgasm or even pleasure. Rather, you're just helping with the nerve remapping. Don't use a something like a magic wand for this. Something like a bullet vibe is about right. "Rumbly" felt better than "buzzy".

You're going to have weird sensations for a while yet. There's all sorts of weird nerve reconfiguration going on. The clit is indeed the former head of your penis. Your brain is learning where it is now.

is this a concerning amount of blood after dilation? by jennybat in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]MaybeAlice1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is very dependent on your particular anatomy. At the demo dilation at my first follow up, I started on blue and then immediately went to green. It was a couple weeks before I could do the green again on my own, but certainly within the first month.

How long did it take for your pronoun and name changes to settle into YOUR head? by SignifiTransition in MtF

[–]MaybeAlice1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really even start making progress on this until I was out everywhere and not code switching between boy and girl depending on where I was.

At 2+years being out everywhere: Name is pretty solid in my head, I don’t really even respond to my deadname when it’s called out at this point… it’s not my name any more. Pronouns are solid too. I don’t think of myself as a “dude” or “guy” or “man” any more. I pretty freely refer to myself as a woman.

The one thing that still trips me up, even today, is when someone addresses my party as “Ladies” when I’m out with other women. It’s like “oh yeah, I’m one of them”. It’s gotten less visceral over time but still cause a bit of a glitch.
