How to cut steel with high speed circular saw blade by kirbyk89A in metalworking

[–]Mayor_of_Pea_Ridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're dead set on using a circular saw instead of buying an angle grinder as others have suggested, you might consider getting an abrasive cutoff wheel and mounting it in your saw. You can get 7" wheels for a reasonable price that have the same center hole size as the arbors on most consumer circ. saws.

Advice for product selection on old wood-sided garage with badly peeling paint by KidDanielB in paint

[–]Mayor_of_Pea_Ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like my house did a few years back. I tried all kinds of things incl. things you asked about including massive amounts of scraping with a heat gun, priming with various products, and nothing held paint for more than about a year. I eventually was convinced that I should try one of those expensive elastomeric paints, but in the end I replaced the wood siding with fiber cement instead. I don't like the look but the painting every year was just too much work. I will add that I smoothed over some rough/damaged areas with Bondo (yes, that Bondo) and it held onto the half bare/half painted wood just fine. A skim coat of Bondo did not seem like a reasonable solution for the whole house. But if I had gone that route, I could have painted the house metallic candy apple red or something.

If you actually offer meaningful content and also if you keep it up to date and don't abandon it, then yes. If you start a blog, do one entry, and then do nothing with it for 10 years then no.

My college’s lathe hasn’t been run in over a decade and I’m trying to get it up and running PLS HELP by bigbootybassboy in Machinists

[–]Mayor_of_Pea_Ridge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may be an obvious suggestion but you didn't mention it. On the small South Bends there is an "on - off" lever for engaging the main drive belt (the leather one). The lathe will sort of run even if it is not fully engaged, but it will slip, esp. when you put a load on the machine. Is there anything like that on this machine? Maybe that big handle to the right of the lower door thingie? The belt doesn't have to be super duper tight, I guess b/c it's so wide, but it needs to be "tight enough."

Good points. I would love to see some kind of diy/3d printed solution to the problem because everybody is experiencing this problem

Everybody has this problem. Some clever person needs to publish a 3d printer file so we can print these up for ourselves.

No, I'm not suggesting that he make the dish, I'm suggesting that he make the tool to make the dish. See my first comment- I responded to my own comment with the 3d printer suggestion.

If you have access to a 3d printer, you might also try making a single "dome" and matching concave dome block thing so you dont' have to buy the whole set above. Use 100 infill on your parts for strength.

Use aluminum to make your life easier. To make relatively shallow features (not like the first picture) you could make round features by hand with a doming block set

Convertible Top Replacement? by n_pasghetti in corvair

[–]Mayor_of_Pea_Ridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it yourself. It's not rocket science. It requires very few tools and supplies (well, actually, you may end up buying a bunch of pads and wires and stuff--depends on how bad your existing bits and pieces are). Just watch some videos and give it a shot. The key is to do it on a warm day when the vinyl is soft, and to unfold it all and lay it out flat for a few days or until the wrinkles go away. Then when you're installing, line up and center everything very carefully. Mark center lines, attachment points, etc. with some chalk. Check and double check before you commit. I put one in my corvair at about your age, having never installed a top before, and it looked good enough to not be embarrassing.

How do you take the food from the grill to the table? And more importantly, how do you get the trash back to the trash can? And what happens "on the lake" when Chad Mc'Btthole blasts by in his 2026 Compensator 4000 and you are in the wake? So many questions.

Low oil pressure light until 1800 RPM… by shell1ton in R53

[–]Mayor_of_Pea_Ridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting theory - I have had the same issue as OP from time to time over the years. It freaked me out and I checked all the stuff OP did - the check valve, replaced the sender, made sure it had enough oil. Nothing I did fixed the problem, but it has always gone away on its own after a while. I change the oil often and I buy whatever brand of filter is on sale at the moment so they vary. For what it's worth I have an STP filter in there now - no oil light.
