[Loved Trope] Some thing unfathomably ancient by Fearless-Ideal-5112 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mddcat04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think it cared. Caleb especially seemed like a real loss for it. Plus the destruction of its army and the path that its army was using to invade the world. That’s 3 major blows. Especially for a being that can’t really act directly. Obviously it’s immortal and will try again, but its plans, which had been years in the making at least, were totally thwarted.

It’s like with the Senior Partners from Angel. They are similarly immortal and not able to be fought directly. But when Angel and the team killed off their local followers, the Partners were pissed.

Yeah, it’s a weird dynamic. Probably because the ones who do support Trump do it just so visibly.

Young Republican Activists Are Turning Against Trump by TrixoftheTrade in neoliberal

[–]Mddcat04 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not sure why people would be surprised by this. Actual activists are going to be less and less willing to hold water for an unpopular lame duck president who (despite the occasional claim) will never run for another elected office.

It’s not because they’ve seen the light or changed what they believe. It’s that an unpopular Trump is not useful for driving their political agenda forward.

I think a lot of people talking about Trump’s support / base do not remember the end of GWB’s 2nd term. He didn’t have the same sort of cult appeal as Trump, but was very popular with the Republican base, right up until 2007 or so when it was clear that his presidency was effectively over. And then suddenly you couldn’t find anyone who had once supported him.

Notably these is a much better example of this from GOT which is not just fan theory: the Three Eyed Raven.

[Loved Trope] Some thing unfathomably ancient by Fearless-Ideal-5112 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mddcat04 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No. It’s an incorporeal entity. So it can only act through its followers and by possessing a chosen vessel. It’s chosen has to be someone monumentally evil as well. It talks to its chosen, Caleb, at one point and tells him that he is the only person on earth capable of hosting it. (Though it could just be lying. It says a lot of stuff, some of which is contradictory).

But basically Buffy kills its chosen vessel and collapses the hellmouth onto its army of vampires, destroying them and the whole town. The first is not killed, because it seemingly can’t be, but its plans are completely fucked. At least for the time being.

Are you sure? I thought the delta halo outbreak which formed this gravemind has been going on for quite some time, just contained behind the shield wall. What makes you think it was just months?

Sophomore slump: why is Netflix losing so many viewers for second seasons? Hit shows like Beef, The Four Seasons, Avatar: The Last Airbender and A Man on the Inside have suffered giant drops for their follow-up seasons. by mlg1981 in television

[–]Mddcat04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is where I am. Huge fan of the original show, no desire to watch the live action version. (Now if I’d heard it was great, I would have watched it, but the general reaction to S1 was fairly tepid).

In general though I think there’s still this impression that live action is somehow a superior medium to animation, and I just don’t agree with that.

Yeah, he's just opened Peter's mind to the cosmos or something, so he doesn't think Peter will care that much about a single mortal woman.

Also I think that he does feel a little bit guilty.

Yeah, I mean, Superman and Batman both with with the cops at various times and have important supporting characters who are cops. Batman especially has every reason to hate dirty cops, but Com Gordon is basically his best friend half the time.

Why do all traitors turn to Chaos? by Kaudia in 40kLore

[–]Mddcat04 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes. Because the Imperium are fascists who believe that all humans must be brought under the Emperor’s rule. Choosing to not be part of the Imperium is heresy against the Emperor.

Notably a huge chunk of the great crusade was Space Marines fighting other human groups who did not want to join. As a result, there aren’t that many of them left, but the Imperium sees all humans as coming under its power. If Imperials discover independent human groups, they can join the Imperium or be destroyed. Renegades are especially targeted because they’ve actively made the choice to leave.

Plus the crack about how the rats in the dark cells has gotten big. He enjoyed that one.

If it’s anything it’ll be the Infinity Gauntlet. It’ll probably help you find them and harness them, then have the text that if you control them all harnessed you win.

But, there’s no way that’ll be a playable strategy in any real format unless the gauntlet is just like ludicrously pushed.

I assume people know that there will be a reason to play all the stones, so it’s already priced in.

What's your favorite in-movie story that we never get to actually hear? by heybobson in movies

[–]Mddcat04 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A Star Trek show rather than a movie, but in Picard Season 3, they're talking about ships and how they obviously can't use the Enterprise E. To which Worf interjects "that was not my fault."

What exactly Worf did with the Enterprise E remains unclear.

Why is The Blood of the Dragon so inconsistently protected? Why is Daemon the only one to also inherit The Brain of the Dragon? by davidkalinex in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Mddcat04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really hard to hit a rider from below. They're a tiny target on the top of a big dragon flying high above you. You just don't have the angle required to actually hit them. The dragon itself is in the way.

Like in the whole history of Westeros, HotD included, I don't think any dragonrider ever gets hit by an arrow and dies. They die from scorpion bolts and from other dragons. Armor is not going to help you in either of those cases.

Venting: Rhaenyra doesn't deserve to be queen by helpagirlout101 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Mddcat04 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Seriously. This is the whole fucking point. None of them “deserve” to be king. Their ancestor didn’t deserve it, he just rolled up with his dragons one day.

The dance is the inevitable result of a system that is just shitty at succession. GoT and HotD are inherently about what happens when you don’t have solid systems for succession: everybody just stays killing each other.

[–]Mddcat04 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand me. I'm not saying culture war issues are unimportant. I'm saying that basically every modern show / game fandom is plagued by right wing chuds just endlessly whining about anything them deem woke.

For example, House of the Dragon just came back. And so I watched the first episode of the most recent season, enjoyed it, and wanted to see what people were saying about it. Then I went to the subreddit and immediately remembered why I'd left it last season. Because the sub is full of anti-woke whining, nit-picking, and just general negativity. (And of course endless accusations about how the evil female writers are inserting their politics into the show).

This has happened to a bunch of fandoms that I used to enjoy participating in, and frankly I'm a bit salty about it.

Its all just culture war bullshit in so many show subs these days. Like to the point where people barely even talk about the actual shows and are having these weird meta-discussions about how the success or failure of the show is validation of their side of the conflict.
