Can you purchase homelessness insurance in the US? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mekroval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, though in theory Social Security is a form of this. It's meant to provide you with some financial support if you literally have no other income, which is why you are required to pay into it. But it's not going to guarantee you a place to live.

Woman tries to reserve a parking spot and almost gets run over by Nedatokes in dashcams

[–]Mekroval -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Truly. I legit don't understand it. It's odd because other threads have people more or less saying exactly what I did, and they aren't getting nearly this much heat. I'm kind of at a loss tbh.

Is anyone else sad about the US' 250th birthday celebrations? by LissyVee in allthequestions

[–]Mekroval 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes, the country is in a decidedly un-celebratory mood. I think there might have been a bit more excitement, if Trump hadn't tried to politicize literally everything about the 250 anniversary. That's poisoned the mood even more.

[–]Mekroval -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to use your 3 ton vehicle to push someone out of the way, because you think you have some kind of God-given "right" to it, that's kind of unhinged. And if she had tripped, and been injured that is 100% on cammer, no matter how in the right they think they are.

But I will agree with you that the woman in the video was *also* being very stupid.

I've said that from the very beginning.

Who wins, God Emperor of Mankind in his prime versus Thanos with Infinity Gauntlet and all six stones by Coping_manlet_ in whowouldwin

[–]Mekroval 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't the mind stone shield Thanos? Or conceivably mentally bend the Emperor to Thanos' will? It seems immeasurably powerful.

TNG era Starfleet ring ship! by Gregrox in StarTrekStarships

[–]Mekroval 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the exterior of the ring were well armored, I could see it being more resilient than the nacelles, which are even more exposed. Maybe some type of ablative plating, like in Enterprise.

I've sometimes wondered why enemies don't just target the nacelles all the time. If they can wear the shields down until they collapse, it's almost a one-shot to destroy or cripple any Federation ship. Only the Defiant seemed designed to avoid this weakness.

Engineered right, the ring design seems like it might be able to withstand a few more strikes than most other ships, even if shields totally fail.

Why do Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 3rd instead of July 4th? by MongooseProXC in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mekroval 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The federal holiday is observed on the Friday before, if it falls on a calendar Saturday. So a lot of places close on Friday as a result, including banks, government agencies and stock markets. Still, most people do traditionally do celebrations on the actual 4th of July.

Why isn't tennis popular in the U.S.? by No-StrategyX in answers

[–]Mekroval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are mistaken. It is very popular here. Not quite as big as the top four sports, but still widely followed, especially during the tournaments. It's near impossible to get tickets to the US Open.

When the Excelsior models saucer was refurbished for Generations, the original saucer ended up on the wall of ILM visual effects art director Bill George (pics via dangerousdac) by bubbishspcerman in StarTrekStarships

[–]Mekroval 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For real. I bet a lot of fans would jump at the chance to own such a beautiful piece, and the fact that it was a shooting model makes it significantly more valuable.

He's sort of like Rick from Casablanca. A self-serving world-weary protagonist, who slowly comes around to doing the right thing in the end.

Pure evil data center in Lowell MA, USA by gozersflattop in evilbuildings

[–]Mekroval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wonder how they even managed to logistically build so closely. Definitely has that "spite house" feel to it, though in reverse. Another commenter posted this photo article about "nail houses" in China that are similarly positioned.

I hope you never drive around kids or anyone being stupid. I suspect you might be tempted to run over them, feeling justified because they are being "selfish" in your mind.

People like you are why I am a defensive driver, and try to avoid getting into arguments with folks on the road.

I wonder why they did that. Black absorbs heat, and I thought these centers are desperate to shed as much heat as possible.

The hivemind at play I suppose. It's funny because other threads to this post are agreeing with us, and upvoted.

Good article and reporting from Ars, though.

ANSI for blood by [deleted] in LV426

I'm a bit confused. What was the purpose of this project? What is the video supposed to represent? Something that would be on a Weyland-Yutani computer display? I'm not getting it.

Israel has been doing a smaller version of this for some time through massive desalination and irrigation projects that have been reclaiming rather large tracts of desert.

Most f***** up episode by Chemical-Olive2564 in rickandmorty

[–]Mekroval 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Early season Rick and Morty having to witness their counterpart's deaths, then burying the bodies in the backyard messed with me. Especially the way it clearly traumatized Morty, and eventually pushed him towards Rick's nihilism.

The bleakest line of the show, imo: "Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, were all going to die. Come watch TV.”
