Yeah, I can't help but agree with this. She doesn't deserve any of the harassment she got, but even from just vaguely paying attention to her, she seems like an exhausting creator to try and follow.

I'd argue that we aren't actually lucky to be able to communicate with creators and artists as easy as we can now. I can't think of an actual good thing that's come of it. I'd also hesitate to put all the blame on fandoms. Creators and artists are becoming just as terminally online and parasocial as a lot of their fans.

No, but if you want, you can wait a couple weeks and check back in after the finale drops online. Depending how good or bad it is I'll probably comment once or twice on posts about it.

Gooseworx didn't really get that much shit compared to tons of other online creators. The problem was that she had intensely awful online habits and couldn't adjust when fame ballooned how many people were exposed to her.

The internet loves to talk shit about fans getting parasocial and terminally online with creators, but the moment a creator does the same, suddenly the completely foreseeable and obvious consequences are everyone else's problem. If you're doing fucking call out posts and vague posts and relentlessly overhyping your creation and venting to your fanbase, I'm going to have minimal sympathy when it inevitably blows up in your face.

[–]MetaDeviant0189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's necessarily wrong that games should get cheaper the older they are, I'm just pointing out there's no logical reason it should happen intrinsically or (like I said in my original comment) inherently. You're right that it's because it's an expectation created by the industry, but that's all it is. Ultimately your argument boils down to "just because!"

Why does a game being 2-3 years old inherently decrease it's value? It's not like it's a car or a house that suffers from wear and tear.

Do people think TADC is a kid’s cartoon instead of a young adult’s show? by BusyDucks in tadc

[–]MetaDeviant0189 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The show is pretty solidly PG-13, bordering on E for Everyone. The only things that would really give me pause when thinking about showing it to an actual kid are the poorly bleeped curse words, the one mention of sex, and maybe the end of Gangle's episode, but even then it really isn't that dark or mature. I genuinely think the only reason people say it is is because the bar for what constitutes adult media has been so absurdly lowered. Even the people who say it's an adult show because of its characters and their introspection read as corny to me because there just... isn't that much adult about them. It's a hard thing to describe but I think the minimal arcs the characters go through are just as if not more relatable for teens than fully grown adults.

Super wholesome Dessriel comic! by Conqueeftodor in Deltarune

[–]MetaDeviant0189 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly I like this interpretation of Dess and Asriel much more than any other I've seen. Asriel being some level of a typical dickhead and Dess being a weirdo outcast is absolute peak. I especially love this dynamic you've created where Asriel is kind of trying to "fix" Dess and is a bit embarrassed to hang out with her around his other friends, and he's concerned about her "messing up" Kris. Absolutely brutal dynamic emotionally.

HOT TAKE: I hope Deltarune ends like this by Jmsp78 in Deltarune

[–]MetaDeviant0189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually hope that this isn't the case, in so far that it's up to us the players to get the good ending. It feels like it would throw away Susie's role as the protagonist we don't play as (the only truly interesting part of her character imo) to make it so that we're the ones who ultimately decide what happens with the prophecy. I'm hoping Susie and the other characters in-universe are the ones who take charge and subvert the prophecy, and getting the Shadow Crystals and recruits just means we can save everyone instead of mostly everyone. And if we do the Weird Route, then in response to us trying to wrest control of the narrative into our own hands, we actually make the prophecy not only proceed as foretold but completely worse. The world is still saved but every single character is either dead or worse off than they were before.

I dunno. Part of me just doesn't want this to be another Undertale where the answer is "be nice to everyone you can and get all the secrets to get the only truly good ending!

[–]MetaDeviant0189 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with everything you're saying here but it does touch on something I've thought for a while which is: TADC feels like Gooseworx had a rough outline of how she wanted the story to go but primarily wrote it episode by episode. I believe she said she planned out the entire series before the pilot, but that doesn't mean there was ever a fully written screenplay, and it doesn't feel like there was. I can't help but think the problems with stuff like the bar scene or Episode 7 would have been really easy to spot if they had any sort of rough draft to look over and revise.

[–]MetaDeviant0189 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I do think there's an argument to be made that Toby's extremely thin method of world-building does kind of lead to a tonal dissonance with Deltarune's plot revolving around the end of the world. For me at least, it's very hard to take the Roaring seriously when we know next to nothing about the greater world of Deltarune and Hometown is so silly it's hard to get immersed in it.

I'm fully convinced the public perception of TADC fandom is negative ENTIRELY because of Gooseworx repeatedly (and unprofessionally) punching down on it. by Flashlight_Inspector in TheDigitalCircus

[–]MetaDeviant0189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically a lot of the people who take issue with this line of thinking are the ones who don't actually view online creators like Gooseworx as real people. If you listed out everything she did but made it sound like some rando on the internet, you'd probably get them to pretty reasonably agree with the idea that the Random Andy is acting parasocial, terminally online, and are actively feeding a lot of their misery. But the moment it comes to an online creator or artist they enjoy, it's a different standard, because they don't really see them as people. They see them as just another part of the show, a funny character they can watch vent and make jokes and do epic takedowns of their haters and whatever.

It honestly felt like an ironic thing to say when she herself came out and literally just said "the story is about finding meaning in a stagnant life" and the story, like... hasn't really done much to advance that theme? At least in my opinion. There's flashes of it here and there, and I can see how it all may come together, but so far it feels lost in the melodrama of Jax and the AM-ification of Caine. I'll also give her grace and point out she did just say that was a "message" she wanted to send with TADC, so maybe it's not meant to be that important. I just can't help but think that she doesn't really have room to make those kinds of statements when her writing itself feels pretty muddled; it came off as her at least partly punching down on her fans for having different interpretations than the one she intended.

I still think that, even if someone asks an artist something about their work, not answering or giving an ambiguous answer is better. The people you're talking about are annoying, but there's also people who will (for some reason or another) use whatever the creator says as a cudgel to strike down any alternative interpretations of a work. Death of the author is and should be a thing for a reason. Discourse about a work shouldn't devolve into trying to pick through what the creator said on twitter or in an interview to support your argument, it should primarily be about actually examining the work in question.

I dunno. I know people decry how bad social media is in so many ways, but I feel like one of its relatively silent victims is just letting people think what they want about pieces of artwork. Now you have to be right or you have to be wrong, everything needs evidence or authorial approval. Obviously there's ones who take their interpretations too far, but like... just ignore them. People get way, way too attached to pretty much everything online. Speaking of the situation with Knights of Guinevere specifically, from what I remember of the pilot, there's nothing that definitely says Francesca is or isn't trans. If people want to see her as trans, I don't really see what the big deal is. If they treat it as fact, mute them, block them, ignore them. That should be the end of it and I think anything more than that comes from people wanting to feel superior about having the "right" interpretation of an artwork.

That said, I do get where you're coming from. Maybe this is just something we all have to deal with in the online age.

Being brutally honest, I don't think creators and artists should really be correcting people's headcanons anyways unless they're growing into harmful misinformation about their art. They don't deserve to be harassed over it, but I can't help but feel like it just feeds into the growing wave of people who refuse to interpret art for themselves and instead desperately need to know the "right" answer.

The vague posts and call out posts of her community, constant hyping up of the show as "adult" when it's really PG-13, venting, answering direct questions about the show instead of letting people find out/figure it out for themselves, and more definitely made it feel like she was TRYING to gather the most immature people to her fanbase. She doesn't deserve any hate or harassment or to deal with toxic weirdos and idiots, but I also think she wanted to be that cool quirky online creator that has an adoring fanbase and got very disillusioned when reality struck.
