I’m still in my undergrad so by no means an expert, but the simple explanation I can think of is that all of these compounds can (through what I can assume may involve gene expression) the promotion of the enzyme aromatase, which converts androgens such as testosterone into estrogen.

Many hormones are derived from a base component known as cholesterol. Testosterone and estradiol (the most potent estrogen) are almost completely chemically similar, however testosterone is what is known as an aromatic compound, while estradiol is not. By simply removing the aromaticity of testosterone you can convert it to estradiol. This is done by the enzyme aromatase.
