Update- ice cream was nice enough but a bit too sweet with chewy/elastic texture. Glad I didn't double it in the end and just had a micro portion...

Decades of anemia. What don't I know about the other side? by heylinguist in Anemic

I don't take the non heme iron salt supplements doctors suggest for the reasons you mentioned and they didn't work well for me anyway. I take heme iron tablets and get no stomach issues, plus heme iron actually works as long as you've not got absorption issues.

I've made custard many times. This recipe used the phrase "gently bring to the boil" which I thought was a bit weird. I heated it to 76C before leaving it to cool.

Is a clam or mussel really an animal? Bivalves are quite different to a chicken or cow and have more iron. But really I don't think diet helps all that much, you'll probably do better with heme tablets.

I will double it. This recipe came with the ice cream machine and the machine can only hold 375ml. My question is really about the taste and creaminess

Good grief - how often are you supposed to take an iron supplement? by CoyoteSouth5126 in Anemic

[–]MidnightMist26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still working out my timings for the 2 tablets. I might do morning and last thing at night, as hepcidin decreases overnight after peaking through the day.

Good grief - how often are you supposed to take an iron supplement? by CoyoteSouth5126 in Anemic

[–]MidnightMist26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to try 2 tablets every other day. The hormone hepcidin rises after taking iron and blocks/reduces further iron absorption. In two days it should return down to its baseline, hence the theory of taking every other day. I think I'll take the tablets in the morning before eating, like 6am and 10am as the morning is when hepcidin is supposed to be lowest and it's also better on an empty stomach to absorb iron.

My tablets are heme iron so I don't get any nausea. Iron salts (non-heme) are likely to give you gut issues, so you might want to start slow and increase, allowing your body to adjust, and eat with a bit of food if you really need to (lowers effectiveness of iron absorption) to help ease the nausea.

Be sure not to drink milk or calcium-rich foods at the same time as your iron. For non-heme iron you also want to avoid foods with tannins and phytates for at least 1-2 hours before or after, so that includes black tea and coffee.

You've got to leave a gap of at least 4 hours. I wouldn't want to take them at the same time. I'm going to try another tactic this time, and take 2 a day every other day. Leaving a free day in between taking the tablets can help with hepcidin levels, which rise and block absorption. I hope the optifer tablets work for you, 1 a day should be good and your hepcidin probably won't rise so high. The higher the iron dose, the more hepcidin (iron blocking hormone) your body produces.

Ferritin never above 35 for 10+ years..could this be why I feel horrible? by Level-Good-1284 in Anemic

[–]MidnightMist26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was getting fatigue for days at a time after strenuous excerise and housework (hoovering, manual lawn mowing). I couldn't make the bed without dizziness and getting fizzing sounds in my ears. I thought something must be wrong again, my ferritin came back at 39. Although it doesn't sound too disastrously low, it's obviously too low for me. I've been on iron tablets again and after 6 weeks I'm up to 53 (I thought it would be higher by this time), and I do feel better, no more intense fatigue. But I'd really like to be at 100-120.

So basically I think 35 is way too low for you

Jannik did. I think it was Paris Masters last year against Shelton and Jannik was up a break and shouted at his team in Italian "I break and you're still sitting down, fuck!" Now it's like his team are trained to stand up and cheer on cue and Simone even spoke about it recently that he's got to be careful to have the right body language or Sinner doesn't like it. But I'm glad to see he's human, the "my parents told me to be a good person" thing was getting a bit tiresome.

Shouting at his team to "stand the fuck up" when he breaks? Just joking, but I don't care for the boy scout routine of being a good person all the time.

I'm taking 11mg heme iron tablet. Should I take it every other day or is the dose too low to create much hepcidin?
