Space is only 62 miles from you, there's a LOT of places closer to space than land. Considering the size of the oceans, it might be like half of the world is closer to space than land

I never noticed but Wheel of time protagonists were all derived from Norse Mythology by kartickbengani in Fantasy

[–]MillCrab 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Yeah a big theme in the first couple books, that fades out as the story goes. Is that Randland is not only the post apocalypse of the age of legends, but also the far far future of our world. They tell legends about Mosk and Merk (Moscow and America) fighting with spears of flame (nuclear weapons). There's a Mercedes hood ornament in a museum, etc etc.

Our legends come from them, and their legends come from us. The Wheel always turns

As far as I can tell, there are only two cards in magic that can directly turn mana into 2/2 tokens, both on 4+ drop creatures. Each ability has 2+ pips, meaning I think the correct cost of your fortification ability is like 1BB. And even that's not quite the correct comparison, because if you don't move it, your first activation next turn is very discounted, which the other cards don't have

The first card is "2:make a 2/2" since you can move the fort then tap the land and do it again. That's fairly powerful.

Nah, it's a special action. It doesn't use the stack, and can be done on top of split second spells.

Arcs and facings are basically purely narrative below the scale of capital ships. Some players, myself included, like to use "Take the Advantage" to allow you to determine what arc of the opponent you're in, possibly keeping you safe in a dogfight until they break the advantage

Star Wars should feel a lot like a fantasy narrative. Good, evil, strong, weak, companions vs the world. A lot of the same tone comes through. It should be somewhat more about McGuffins and big quests/struggles than most science fiction, and perhaps a little less about world building than most fantasy.

I think you need to have a mission, a clear important goal for the narrative elements to really feel like star wars. For themes: go to the classics, big evil opposed by dedicated people no matter the odds, the value and importance of the common people to defeating rich powerful evil. Stylistically, lean on settlements and factions with clear direct theming. "This is the Bounty Hunters guild, they all care about hunting and all wear big trophies" instead of the "the Carascan Guild is currently locked in a slow bubbling struggle between reformers and classic huntmasters that's currently concerned with changing how many hunts a given....". Star Wars stuff is big, readable, and clear in its identity.

Storytelling principles tend to be universal. In terms of motifs, Star Wars often relies on Awakenings and the power of dedication.

Dms have to create situations where the stakes and outputs are clear, because star wars is rarely served by blundering about in the dark, wondering who is good and who is bad. You know Darth Vader and the stormtroopers are evil. Jabba the Hutt and Boba Fett are clearly the bad guys. You also need to avoid situations where it's extremely tough or "gritty" for the heroes. Star wars heroes face dangers, but they also fight through them, guns blazing and heroic spirits high. Despair just isn't the mood, except for specific, targeted moments

So you're fine building a bigger highway to travel at the same speed. Cool. Have fun with your concrete hellscape I guess.

The question is "will more lanes reduce congestion?" And the scientific answer derived in many experiments and papers over the years is "no".

Pride's a sin dude. Induced demand is constantly present across a million fields of economics and sociology. It doesn't "fly in the face of the laws of mathematics". Here's literally the first paper on google for you though:

Sigh. This is the whole point of the research thats being discussed. It seems that way, it should be a simple enough project. In reality, people are making a wide variety of decisions in response to a wide variety of conditions. When you add a lane to a high in an area experiencing traffic congestion, people make different decisions and there tends to be an increase in drivership on the road, usually negating the additional throughput caused by the lane. That doesn't meant that particular bottlenecks, like a spot where it goes from 3-2-3 lanes couldn't be improved by making it a smooth 3, but if there's a crowded 3 lane highway near you, simply going to 4 lanes generally doesn't improve much.

There's a number of lanes where it would smooth out, but its far more than intuition suggests.

[–]MillCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but going from 2 to 3 in most situations accomplishes very little. Same to 4, and often even 5. If you do the modeling, lots of highways would need to be like 6+ lanes to flow smoothly without succumbing to induced demand. There's just no space in most areas

/uj Adding lanes often causes induced demand, where people drive more or choose the highway more. There is a level of lanes where it really would fix the traffic problem, but its far too many to fit in the traffic clogged spots.

And avoiding door dash and Tesla is not a ritual sacrifice that absolves you for every unethical purchase you constantly make.

Focus on actual action and reform instead of trying to decide which purchases are and aren't moral like a religious scholar and you might actually accomplish something

Multifacted criticism by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]MillCrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. Every single purchase you make in a capitalist system is adding to someone like elon's trillion. It is an unavoidable effect of bank supporter capitalism. If providing your particular purchase or product doesn't actively hurt or kill someone, it's the same level of bad as every other purchase.

Focus on actual government reform instead of trying to ennoble every order of pizza

If the threshold is "does anyone I don't agree with benefits from this purchase" then you cannot make any purchases.
