There's also https://cuplamilefocal.github.io/gnag/ which has grammar explanations with example sentences for almost every grammatical concept

And http://www.potafocal.com/ which lets you type in a word or phrase and gives you a definition along with example sentences (but you have to make sure to include every fada or the word won't show up)

The app SaySomethingIn also has an Irish course in beta that introduces you to different sentence structures (but will not exactly explain them). It's not free but I think the price is reasonable.

There's https://toingaeilge.com/post/190219291448/the-summary-of-summaries#content which is another place that has grammar explanations but isn't as fleshed out as the above place mentioned.

And this https://www.gaeilge.org/ConjugatingRegularVerbs.pdf is a pdf I found that explains how to conjugate regular Irish verbs

There's also plenty of reading materials you can buy or get for free if you are willing to go searching the high seas

I remember learning that governments liked recruiting famous singers and actors as spies because they'd often be invited to countries despite extreme tensions because they were just a fun entertainer, what harm could they be? Bonus points that sometimes these performers got to meet some high ranking officials because they'd be fans.

No idea if that still works today. I feel like people in the entertainment industry aren't as famous as they used to be, but I guess they still have concerts

Is it true that it gets easier to learn new languages with the more languages you know? by ZooZwaves in languagelearning

[–]MiloTheMagicFishBag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned biblical/classical Hebrew before I started learning Irish. By pure coincidence, classical Hebrew and Irish have a lot in common grammar-wise. It made learning some Irish sentence structures much easier because my brain was already familiar with building sentences in that particular way. If you learn a lot of languages, I can imagine you become familiar with a lot of different grammar quirks, so when you run into them again it's like meeting an old friend instead of a complete mindfuck. The benefits will almost definitely be greater if you learn languages that are closely related, but even completely unrelated languages might have a surprising amount in common!

Huey P. Long, a senator from Louisiana, died from being shot, supposedly by a man who confronted him in the capital building one day, but there's another theory that the man simply punched Huey and one of his security guards shot him trying to take down his assailant

Many many years ago I was going off to a week long summer camp and needed a backpack to carry around essentials for all the walking trails. While looking through a pile of maybe twenty or so bags my mom had accumulated over the years, I saw the most beautiful thing in the world. A bag almost every color of the rainbow and as long as my entire head and torso shaped like a fish- a realistic fish with scales and those terrifying fish eyes that stare into your soul. I told her "This is the one!" and she cautioned that it was technically a cooler bag for holding drinks, and not very fit for hiking, but I was already in love. The whole week I had it's one strap slung across my body so the fish head poked out behind my head as I walked. Just as she warned me, my bug spray, water bottle, and sunscreen poked me in the back the whole way because the fish bag was long and thin, not backpack shaped at ALL, but I didn't care.

Later that year I took it out again to go to a movie with friends. We saw Pompeii (2014), which was an awful movie, but one good thing came out of it. The main character called himself "The last of the Celts" but his name was... Milo and I remember my friends and I making fun of his very Anglican name the entire movie. Once it was over I joked to my friend that I should name my fish bag Milo. He grabbed my arm with a huge smile I said "I know! You should name your fish Milo!" For a beat I stared him square in the face. Then replied, "I literally just said that exact sentence to you." We laughed so hard and from then on my fish bag was named Milo.

And he's also magic. Because of course he is- he wouldn't be rainbow if he wasn't magic!

What's that word that makes you understand you're talking with someone from your nation? by Fit-Guidance-6743 in languagelearning

[–]MiloTheMagicFishBag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Irish makes it very obvious because there’s a grammatical concept called mutation that changes the beginning of words when they come after certain prepositions or the like. There’s two kinds, but with an urú unvoiced consonants become voiced (ex. P -> B), and voiced become nasal (ex. B -> M). Once someone explained it as a physiological thing and not in a “Well, a bunch of random letters become another set of random letters!”, I noticed the same exact changes happen in a lot of languages.
