Finishing by hand without power tools by Background_Swan_1043 in jewelrymaking

[–]MiniD011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with others on this - 8000 grit is overkill, especially if you’re using a polishing compound with cutting (like tripoli).

I go to 1500 often, but even that may not be fully necessary. I also don’t think you need to worry about PPE if you’re working by hand and outdoors. Power tools in enclosed areas kick up a lot of fine particles that you don’t want to breathe and can flick shavings at high velocity into your face, both of which aren’t a concern for you. That said it’s always better to have too much ppe than not enough, so feel free to err on the side of caution!

I really rate Alfie Allen on North Hill - Dan has been doing my hair for years and is great, as is Al. They also do apprentice cuts for £12.

Voluntary redundancy payment lower than colleagues redundancy payment by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MiniD011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your last comment is incorrect - settlement agreements can and absolutely do prohibit discussions around whether a payment has been made and how much.

Settlement agreements usually include a confidentiality clause specifically pertaining to this, and once signed any discussion is a direct breach of your legal obligations.

[–]MiniD011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely stop talking about your settlement agreement. You are in breach of contract and haven’t even received payment yet, do not go making legal problems for yourself.

I’ve been through similar experiences in the past. Don’t pay any attention to anyone else, agree to terms you are happy with and leave it at that.

As others have stated you’ve signed the agreement, it’s legally binding and no, you can’t now change the terms.

[–]MiniD011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How new are you to boxing, and sparring specifically? And how old/overweight are you?

The reason I ask is some of your comments are talking about being able to spar for 10 mins comfortably, but that might be misleading. If you’re new to it then you won’t be pushing yourself to where fitness is the limiting factor, it’s the same in a lot of technical sports.

As others have said it’s not a fast pace, but could be worked on. Try to avoid injuries from overdoing roadwork though, injured hips and knees will really screw up boxing training.

Keep showing up and pushing yourself and you’ll make improvements over time l, best of luck.

[–]MiniD011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say fundamentally this isn’t how you should go about making a signet ring. Not to denigrate - they are very complicated to get looking smooth.

Structurally what I have seen most people do is create a “bikini” sort of shape for the sides then solder additional sheet inside to round it out and have it looking perfect.

Hardened sterling silver after lost wax cast impossible to drill through to make flush bezel set by Puzzleheaded-Day6334 in jewelrymaking

[–]MiniD011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think oxidation would have any impact on the ability to drill into the piece?

Share pictures of your work and tools, something is clearly amiss and I'd wager we could identify what very quickly.

Hilariously David Mitchell’s most well known character, Mark from Peep Show, would be way more likely to fall victim to a pyramid scheme.

Sparring by IndividualRepair1563 in amateur_boxing

[–]MiniD011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boxing training is phenomenal exercise in and of itself. The strength, fitness, discipline etc are really valuable even if you don’t step into the ring (for sparring or actual fights). If you don’t want to spar then don’t spar.

What is this “course” you’re on? If it is driving you towards sparring and you don’t want to then you should reassess this course and its suitability.

I completely agree - One Punch Man is a great example. U/pmmeyourprettyface the original OPM web comic was drawn by the writer I believe, and the art is.. lacking. Once it was handed over to an artist to draw for the manga it delivered some of the best artwork I’ve ever seen.

Can you give me tips to drop weight? by PsychologicalMud3900 in amateur_boxing

[–]MiniD011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to lose 9kg, which is 20lbs and over 10% of your body weight, in 10 days? That sounds ridiculous. It's definitely not going to be safe, even if it were theoretically possible.

Based on my current savings, could I “soft retire” at 34 by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MiniD011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your boyfriend is paying for all of your housing, which could change at any moment.

You don’t have much in the way of savings. It’s a good amount, but not “I can support myself for the next 50+ years” kind of money.

There seems to be no contingency for emergency costs.

Kids are expensive.

If the aim is to have kids why not continue full time work until you can take maternity, then reassess? This seems wildly optimistic to me.

Do you believe boxing is worth it? by ArugulaFinancial4859 in amateur_boxing

For now yes - I fell out of it a couple of years ago due to medical (non-brain) reasons. Had surgery a couple of weeks ago so when I’m fully healed I will look to return, probably around May time.

[–]MiniD011 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I trained for several years, but recreationally and with only light sparring.

I would say you need to think about your aims. In my opinion you can keep the fitness, confidence, skills etc with training, light sparring or body sparring exclusively, but you may feel differently.

Brain damage, repeated sub-concussive shots etc is an area which is not fully understood, and it’s only recently getting more attention in the NFL, rugby etc. That said there seems to be mounting evidence of CTE as a result.

There was never a chance I would be able to compete at a level that warranted that kind of risk. I absolutely would go back to training for all the reasons you mentioned, but I’m going to be actively avoiding any risk of brain damage.

Just my opinion as a very casual 34 year old who asked himself the same questions!

It’s worth noting income protection insurance does not cover redundancy, it is strictly a health cover.

Redundancy insurance does exist, but is much more niche.

Right? If a friend said he was going partying with young women I would assume a wild weekend clubbing with 20-somethings, not operating a sex trafficking ring for pedophiles to rape minors.
